This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes the proceedings of the 10th international conference on Infonnation Pro cessing in Medical Imaging (IPMI-lO), held in June, 1987, in Zeist, The Netherlands. IPMI is a biennial conference, organized alternately in Europe and North America. The subject of the conference is the use of physics, mathematics, computer science, and engineering in the of medical images. The intent of the conference is to fonnation, processing and interpretation provide a forum where new ideas and results of research in medical imaging can be presented and amply discussed. Accordingly, the programme can comprise only a limited number of papers. The scientific committee of IPMI-lO selected 41 papers for presentation, although a total of 102 extended abstracts of on the average high quality had been submitted. All selected contri butions are included in these proceedings. During of the preparations of the conference the organizers received the tragic news of the death of Francois Erbsmann, the initiator of IPMI, and organizer of the first conference in 1969 in Brussels. Francois always emphasized that the backbone of the IPMI meetings should be promising young and active researchers rather than established scientists in the field. As an appreciation of this idea, and in thankful remembrance of Francois' stimulating work, the IPMI-board has taken the initiative to present the Francois Erbsmann prize for the most significant contribution to the conference by a young investigator.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are few techniques that have influenced therapeutic strategies in modem cardiology to a similar extent as coronary arteriography. Bypass surgery as well as transluminal coronary angioplasty would not have been possible without coronary angiography serving as a 'midwife' in their evolu tion. Despite the widespread and long-standing use in clinical practice, however, the interpretation of coronary angiograms has not changed very much since the early days. Most angiogr~s are still reviewed in a visual and semi-quantitative and thus often very subjective way. In the face of an almost exploding field for interventional catheterization including thrombolysis, balloon dilatation, and other rapidly evolving techniques for transluminal revascularization or recanalization, a more detailed and quantitative analysis of coronary arteriograms is urgently required. In addition to the delineation of coronary morphology, we need dynamic and functional information about flow and perfusion to understand the physiological significance of anatomic abnormalities. Coronary arteriography contains and can provide most of this information. With the application of appropriate techniques, it can be made available in the catheterization laboratory even during the patient's investiga tion, thus facilitating and improving clinical decision making. Objective and reproducible analysis will furthermore enhance our understanding about the pathophysiology of coronary disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital radiography is a general term describing any projection radiological system in which the image exists in digital form at some stage between acquisition and viewing. In an earlier form, radiographic films were dig itized in an attempt to enhance and redisplay information of interest. The field has evolved to its current state, in which X-ray signals are detected electronically, converted to digital form, and processed prior to being recorded and displayed. A primary goal of digital radiography is the re moval of interfering effects from secondary structures in an image, so that clinically significant details can be displayed with enhanced visibility. The achievement of this goal involves many parameters, including con trast agents, subtraction techniques, processing techniques, filtering tech niques, system noise, and quantitative aspects. It is the purpose of this book to present material by noted individuals in the field covering several of the above topics. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 1978 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general theme of MEDICON 2013 is "Research and Development of Technology for Sustainable Healthcare". This decade is being characterized by the appearance and use of emergent technologies under development. This situation has produced a tremendous impact on Medicine and Biology from which it is expected an unparalleled evolution in these disciplines towards novel concept and practices. The consequence will be a significant improvement in health care and well-fare, i.e. the shift from a reactive medicine to a preventive medicine. This shift implies that the citizen will play an important role in the healthcare delivery process, what requires a comprehensive and personalized assistance. In this context, society will meet emerging media, incorporated to all objects, capable of providing a seamless, adaptive, anticipatory, unobtrusive and pervasive assistance. The challenge will be to remove current barriers related to the lack of knowledge required to produce new opportunities for all the society, while new paradigms are created for this inclusive society to be socially and economically sustainable, and respectful with the environment. In this way, these proceedings focus on the convergence of biomedical engineering topics ranging from formalized theory through experimental science and technological development to practical clinical applications.
Download or read book Informatics and Medicine written by P. L. Reichertz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 719 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern development of medicine has been characterized by the grow ing use of new technologies in health care delivery and research. As an empirical science, medicine is based on many types and quantities of information to recognize alterations, explore causes and apply cor rective action. Dealing with biological objects, signals have to be collected, processed and interpreted to recognize the state of this object. It is therefore understandable that data processing technology and informatics have been employed to a growing extent in medicine. The increasing economic repercussions of modern medicine lead also to the demand of ways and means to assess the system as such and to develop means for evaluation and regulation. However, the application of data processing to the medical field has very often grown in parallel to and remote from the development of in formatics and data processing in general. Furthermore, difficulties have occurred resulting from the differing concepts of reasoning, deci sion making and methodology. We therefore decided to start a series of seminars with the attempt to bring scientists from both medicine and informatics together to discuss basic principles of informatics and medicine and to attempt a synthesis between the problems in medicine and health care delivery and methods in informatics to approach a solu tion of these problems. This volume contains the lecture notes of the first seminar of this type.
