Book Apple Nutrition Classic Reprint

Download or read book Apple Nutrition Classic Reprint written by M. B. Davis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apple Nutrition This bulletin is published in an effort to educate growers of apples to use the symptoms expressed by their trees as a guide to their fertilizer program. An attempt is made to describe the function and needs of the various fertilizer elements, and, with the aid of colour plates, some of the more common nutritional disturbances. To obtain the most profitable returns from the use of any fertilizer, it is of the utmost necessity that the grow-er be in a position to employ sound judgment based on a knowledge of fundamental principles; a properly interpreted soil analysis; asymptomatic diagnosis or a combination of both. Although general recommendations are of necessity given, they cannot hope to meet the needs of even the majority of cases. If the nutrition of the apple tree could be considered separately from the various soil and environmental conditions a definite formula could be given for its feeding, but trees are grown in soils of widely variable physical and chemical composition, each different soil condition having an influence on availability of nutrients to the tree. The availability of nutrients in a given soil is itself affected by variations of climatic factors, especially rainfall. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of the Science of Nutrition IN the preparation of the first edition of this book a decade ago the endeavor was made to admit to the introductory chapter only such material as appeared to be susceptible of scientific proof and to make it the key to the rest of the book. In this, the third edition, that chapter remains virtually um changed. The rest of the book shows many important addi tions to the facts of metabolism and revisions of its theories. The aim of the book remains the same, to review the scientific substratum upon which rests present-day knowledge of nutrition both in health and in disease. Throughout, no statement has been made without endeavoring to examine the evidence on which it is based. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Road to Good Nutrition Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Road to Good Nutrition Classic Reprint written by Lydia Jane Roberts and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Road to Good Nutrition All parents want their children to be well nourished. If this de sire is to be realized, the parents should have in mind a picture of what a well-nourished child is like and what their own child, with his particular heredity, is capable of attaining. If they will learn to recognize the characteristics of a well-nourished child, as a farmer or a housewife recognizes the characteristics of an excellent ear of corn or loaf of bread, they will be better able to direct their children along the road to good nutrition. If they have no standard by which to judge the child's nutrition they may think that it is good when in reality it is poor. A description of the well-nourished child is given in this bulletin, with a general outline of the care that should bring about this desirable condition. Some of the signs that indicate nutritional failure in a child are described, and the chief hazards to nutrition at various periods of a child's life are pointed out, so that parents, with the advice of their physician, may recognize and deal with these hazards. An effort has been made to give a general view of the problem of nutritional guidance throughout the period of growth, with special at tention to the continuity of the child's life. Throughout the bulletin emphasis has been put on the positive side of good nutrition and the methods of attaining it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Newer Knowledge of Nutrition: The Use of Food for the Preservation of Vitality and Health The literature which has a bearing on the applica tion of modern research to the practical problems of human nutrition has become somewhat extensive and is scattered in technical journals, and is not readily accessible, or easy to read in proper sequence. During the present year the author had the pleasure of presenting an interpretation of this literature in the Thomas Clarence Cutter Lectures at the Harvard Medical School. It is written in German and is rather too large for medical practitioners, as it contains many detailed protocols of the scientific ma terial upon which the system is based. When I was invited to be a Silliman Lecturer at Yale University in the winter of 1921-1922 several of my lectures on'modern Pediatrics were ou this subject of nutrition, and I was asked by many friends to prepare a short book in English which would contain the principal facts and the practical application of the system. Book Good Calories Bad Calories

Download or read book Good Calories Bad Calories written by Gary Taubes and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2008-09-23 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book by award-winning science writer and bestselling author of Why We Get Fat and The Case for Keto shows us that almost everything we believe about the nature of a healthy diet is wrong. For decades we have been taught that fat is bad for us, carbohydrates better, and that the key to a healthy weight is eating less and exercising more. Yet despite this advice, we have seen unprecedented epidemics of obesity and diabetes. Taubes argues that the problem lies in refined carbohydrates, like white flour, easily digested starches, and sugars, and that the key to good health is the kind of calories we take in, not the number. Called “a very important book,” by Andrew Weil and ”destined to change the way we think about food,” by Michael Pollan, this groundbreaking book by award-winning science writer Gary Taubes shows us that almost everything we believe about the nature of a healthy diet is wrong.

Book The Dorito Effect

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark Schatzker
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2015-05-05
  • ISBN : 1501116134
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book The Dorito Effect written by Mark Schatzker and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-05-05 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lively and important argument from an award-winning journalist proving that the key to reversing North America’s health crisis lies in the overlooked link between nutrition and flavor. In The Dorito Effect, Mark Schatzker shows us how our approach to the nation’s number one public health crisis has gotten it wrong. The epidemics of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes are not tied to the overabundance of fat or carbs or any other specific nutrient. Instead, we have been led astray by the growing divide between flavor—the tastes we crave—and the underlying nutrition. Since the late 1940s, we have been slowly leeching flavor out of the food we grow. Those perfectly round, red tomatoes that grace our supermarket aisles today are mostly water, and the big breasted chickens on our dinner plates grow three times faster than they used to, leaving them dry and tasteless. Simultaneously, we have taken great leaps forward in technology, allowing us to produce in the lab the very flavors that are being lost on the farm. Thanks to this largely invisible epidemic, seemingly healthy food is becoming more like junk food: highly craveable but nutritionally empty. We have unknowingly interfered with an ancient chemical language—flavor—that evolved to guide our nutrition, not destroy it. With in-depth historical and scientific research, The Dorito Effect casts the food crisis in a fascinating new light, weaving an enthralling tale of how we got to this point and where we are headed. We’ve been telling ourselves that our addiction to flavor is the problem, but it is actually the solution. We are on the cusp of a new revolution in agriculture that will allow us to eat healthier and live longer by enjoying flavor the way nature intended.
