Book Portrayals of Revolution

Download or read book Portrayals of Revolution written by Noel Parker and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the French try to understand their revolution? How have writers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries portrayed so unprecedented an upheaval? Dr. Parker examines contemporary representations of the Revolution—political rhetoric, journals, theatre, festivals, pictures and prints—concentrating on two special themes. First, the creators of these representations were part of an attempt to found anew the social order. Second, they sought to adapt their forms of culture so as to constitute through them the united community that was to be the agent of this historic new order. The second half of the book considers a representative selection of the many histories and theoretical writings on the Revolution from France, England and Germany: from Barnave and de Stael; to the nineteenth-century founders of social science and romantic historians, such as Michelet; to post-war comparative political writers and post-structuralist marxists influenced by Gramsci and Foucault. By bringing together an analysis of contemporary cultural responses to the Revolution and an account of subsequent cultures’ understanding of it, the author reveals the complex interplay between culture and agents of historical change, which modern views have often failed to realize.

Download or read book The Ties that Bind written by John Erik Fossum and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern states - and novel multinational polities such as the European Union - have to contend with greater degrees, and more complex forms, of diversity. What elements keep complex, «post-national», political entities together? What are the ties that bind people together in a world where they cannot rely on the safety of established national identifications (if they ever could)? This collection of essays by leading political scientists, philosophers and legal academics from Canada and Europe provides a transatlantic dialogue on the ways in which complex states (such as Canada) and non-states (the EU) may broach the modes of difference and diversity that confront them. Authors engage in insightful «diagnoses» of contemporary forms and modes of diversity, as well as critical appraisals of a number of normative responses meant to answer these challenges. These responses range from «reasonable accommodation» and multinationalism to cosmopolitanism. They include the recognition of «post-national», «multinational» or «deterritorialised» democracy and constitutional patriotism, as well as plural or «denationalised» citizenship.

Book The Presence of the Word

Download or read book The Presence of the Word written by Walter J. Ong and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1967-01-01 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This provocative exploration of the nature and history of the word in some of its social, psychological, literary, phenomenological, and religious dimensions argues that the word is initially aural and in the last analysis always remains sound; it cannot be reduced to any other category. Father Ong contends that sound is essentially an event manifesting power and personal presence, and his descriptive analysis of the development of the media of verbal expression, from their oral sources through the laborious transfer to the visual world and then to contemporary means of electronic communication, shows that the predicament of the human word is the predicament of man himself. Examining the close alliance of the spoken word with the sense of the sacred, particularly in the Hebreo-Christian tradition, he reveals that in a world where presence has penetrated time and space as never before, modern man must find the God who has given himself in the Word which brings man more into the world of sound than of sight.

This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Words of a Leader: Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan” was issued in Arabic and translated into various languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Hindi and Italian. The book, which was issued in conjunction with the celebration of the birth centenary of the Late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan and “The Year of Zayed”, contains selected quotes by Sheikh Zayed that reflect the foundations upon which he established his rule, as well as the principles and values on which his vision to build and develop the United Arab Emirates was founded. Among his most notable principles is his belief that investing in the people is far more important than investing in buildings and material life, and that society’s development must include all aspects of life, such as urbanization, economy, social life, culture and all kinds of development. He also called for proper use of resources and wealth and advocated openness to modern science. Through many of Sheikh Zayed’s quotes and sayings, the book reveals how deep he was intellectually, and how diverse and rich his vision was, and shows how he was interested in all groups of society and keen to address and provide advice to everyone, particularly the youth, whom he always considered an important contributor to the future and success of this nation. Sheikh Zayed focused on encouraging the youth on every occasion and motivating them to work harder and more creatively. Moreover, he always advocated for respecting women and providing them with equal opportunities in all aspects of life.

Download or read book The French Debate written by Marcus Ackroyd and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-04-03 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the creation and career of the French Constitution of 1795, operative from the start of the Directory until Napoleon’s takeover in 1799. It explores the composition, history and replacement of the French Revolution’s third Constitution through a focus on the speeches and writings of four sets of political voices discernible in late 1790s France. The four main chapters present these voices as Thermidorians, Conservatives, Republicans and Brumairiens. They reveal the intensity and breadth of the debates generated by the permanent tension between the Constitution and the many ongoing conflicts of the Revolution. Set within and beyond the government and the two legislative chambers, the debates feature numerous conflicts central to the French Revolution including the composition and functions of the public powers, the legitimacy of exceptional laws, the regulation of the press and freedom of religion. This sustained focus on the relationship between the political nation and the Constitution provides a fresh reading of the political culture of the Directory.

Book The French Revolution Vol 1 3

Download or read book The French Revolution Vol 1 3 written by Hippolyte Taine and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-12 with total page 1859 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French Revolution in three volumes is a historical work by French historian Hippolyte Taine. This period of far-reaching social and political upheaval in France began in 1789 with the fall of the Bastille and held the country in turbulence for the next decade. The Revolution overthrew the monarchy, established a republic, catalyzed violent periods of political turmoil, and finally culminated in a dictatorship under Napoleon. Conceived by Taine with the aim of understanding the France of his day, his work achieved originality in its use of a long perspective to analyze the causes of the French Revolution. In particular, Taine denounced the artificiality of the revolution's political constructions (the excessively abstract and rational spirit of Robespierre, for example), which, in his mind, violently contradicted the natural and slow growth of the institutions of a State. For him, the force of history is such that it is illusory to want to change a society. Thus, following the defeat of Sedan and the Commune, Taine accuses the French Revolution of being the matrix of all evils which brought France into a cycle of decadence. It is in particular the abstraction of the philosophy of the Enlightenment which is rejected.
