In these two sermons an attempt is made to press as clearly as possible a current view of the Christian minis try, and to draw from it certain deductions and applica tions which are believed to be of the utmost importance to the church of God. But lest the exact-position maintained in these sermons should be misunderstood, I have endeavored to express their contents in the following propositions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apostolic Succession and the Problem of Unity IN writing an introduction to this book I do not intend to convey the impression that I have, in any way, contributed to its contents. The book is the author's work, and his alone. While I do not agree with all that is written, I think it well and strongly written, and that it ought to find place in the discussion of the subject of the unity of Christendom. Where the issues are SO great, so profoundly important, no region ought to be left unexplored, no question (no matter how old or how often investigated) should be left undiscussed in its new bearings, no amount of patient, charitable investigation ought to be regarded as onerous; but the discussion should be utterly free, completely full and without passion. No subject connected with it Should be held SO sacred that it may not reverently and respectfully be tested. In this spirit of respectful investigation the author has entered into the discussion, sometimes with questions which he seeks to answer, sometimes with declarations which he considers that the Church's teaching war rants. The real merit of both questions and dec larations can best be tested in the Open court of the Church's sifting and searching processes which inev itably tend to the illumination Of' the truth. Into this Open court the book enters, its author aux ous to con. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anglican Orders and Jurisdiction The method adopted by these controversialists varies from time to time. Sometimes the Nag's Head fable is unblushingly put forward as a fact: sometimes the asser tion is made that Archbishop Parker never received any consecration at all, and consequently that Parker's Register is a forgery; sometimes that Bishop Barlow, his chief Consecrator, was not himself a Bishop, and there fore Parker did not and could not receive Episcopal Consecration at the ceremony performed at Lambeth: sometimes the Anglican Ordinal is alleged to be invalid n Matter and Form; sometimes that there was ho right Intention on the part of Parker's consecrators, and therefore the Rite observed was null and void; sometimes that Parker's consecrators did not possess Mission, and so were incompetent to consecrate him; and, finally, when their other allegations have been shown to be destitute of foundation, they sometimes allege that, granted the Anglican Church possesses the Apostolical Succession, her Hierarchy has no Jurisdiction. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apostolic Succession, or the Exclusive Claims of Romanism and Episcopalianism to a Valid Ministry, Weighed and Found Wanting The Christian Church is unique in its character. It differs fun damentally from all other organizations in the world. Societies and civil governments may illustrate its nature, but furnish at best but very faint analogies of its constitution. The Church differs essen tially from them all. In what does this fundamental diversity con sist? Not in the fact that the design of the Church is different from that of all other organizations. The design of temperance societies is to reform drunkards and check the Spread of intemper ance; of beneficial societies, to render assistance to their members in time of need; of national governments, to protect-and promote the civil interests of their citizens of the Church, to save sinners and make them meet for an inheritance with the saints in light. There is in this respect a vast difference between the Church and other institutions, but the difference is not fundamental. Neither is it to be found in the fact that the Church was ordained directly of God. True, it was established by God more directly than any other institution but the powers that be, that is, civil governments, are also ordained of God, as St. Paul tells us. Book The High Church Claims

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The High-Church Claims: Or a Series of Papers on the High-Church Theory, Anglican Claims to Apostolical Succession, Etc At the same time a serious danger had to be avoided. No concessions could be made to error beyond the acknowledgment of sincere belief that it was unconscious. To have allowed it to possess a single mark or element of Catholicity, to have admitted a particle of the specious theory of apos tolic succession, silent, unrecognized communion with the Church, and possession of sacramental power by the national establishment, would have been both false in theology and pernicious in prac tice. It would have encouraged a delusion which, undisturbed, might have laid many asleep in a fatal contentment who now repose in peaceful security in the bosom of their Mother the Church. No real love for those involved in this state could be shown except by energetic endeavors to snatch them from it. Whoever, therefore, wished to be truly their best friend, had to make up his mind to appear their most unrelenting opponent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses on the Apostolical Succession Things which are very absurd in themselves, are sometimes forced by circumstances into positions Of great importance. This we believe to be true Of the modern doctrine of Apostolical Succession. N othing could save it from utter contempt, but the extent and respectability of the denomination ofchristians With which it stands associated. Enor mous as its pretensions are, it gains currency from the stations and influence of those who appear on its side; and it Will not die of itself. Like other errors, it must be brought to the tests Of reason and scrip ture; and to subject it to the operation of these tests, is the appropri ate work of the pastors of the churches, who, in their respective places, are set for the defence of the Gospel.
