Where the issues are SO great, so profoundly important, no region ought to be left unexplored, no question (no matter how old or how often investigated) should be left undiscussed in its new bearings, no amount of patient, charitable investigation ought to be regarded as onerous; but the discussion should be utterly free, completely full and without passion. No subject connected with it Should be held SO sacred that it may not reverently and respectfully be tested. Sometimes the Nag's Head fable is unblushingly put forward as a fact: sometimes the asser tion is made that Archbishop Parker never received any consecration at all, and consequently that Parker's Register is a forgery; sometimes that Bishop Barlow, his chief Consecrator, was not himself a Bishop, and there fore Parker did not and could not receive Episcopal Consecration at the ceremony performed at Lambeth: sometimes the Anglican Ordinal is alleged to be invalid n Matter and Form; sometimes that there was ho right Intention on the part of Parker's consecrators, and therefore the Rite observed was null and void; sometimes that Parker's consecrators did not possess Mission, and so were incompetent to consecrate him; and, finally, when their other allegations have been shown to be destitute of foundation, they sometimes allege that, granted the Anglican Church possesses the Apostolical Succession, her Hierarchy has no Jurisdiction. It differs fun damentally from all other organizations in the world. Societies and civil governments may illustrate its nature, but furnish at best but very faint analogies of its constitution. The Church differs essen tially from them all. In what does this fundamental diversity con sist? Not in the fact that the design of the Church is different from that of all other organizations. The design of temperance societies is to reform drunkards and check the Spread of intemper ance; of beneficial societies, to render assistance to their members in time of need; of national governments, to protect-and promote the civil interests of their citizens of the Church, to save sinners and make them meet for an inheritance with the saints in light. There is in this respect a vast difference between the Church and other institutions, but the difference is not fundamental. Neither is it to be found in the fact that the Church was ordained directly of God. True, it was established by God more directly than any other institution but the powers that be, that is, civil governments, are also ordained of God, as St. Paul tells us.
