Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Antiquitates Apostolicae, Vol. 1: Or the Lives, Acts, and Martyrdoms of the Holy Apostles of Our Saviour We would gather from this, that a biographer of the apostles, and their first successors, has a wide field open to him which he may traverse with safety and profit; but at the same time imposing on him this strict and uniformly applicable rule, that that species of traditional information only is to be made use of, which is found adopted by those who lived at a period sufiicientl y near the apostolic times to judge of its origin and its authors. Taking this as a primary principle in the selection of in cidents, and in every instance examining them by the rule of analogy and verisimilitude, there will be little danger of our adopting any of those weak inventions by which the superstition of former ages was amused and fostered. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Acts of the Apostles, or the History of the Church in the Apostolic Age, Vol. 3 There was only one element which, in the existing circum stances, could have made an impression, and, perhaps, have brought about a favourable issue, viz., that of facts. And, indeed, the Apostle has at his command the domain of facts, and avails himself of them with such power that one might well have expected the Jews to bethink themselves, if only they had quietly considered them, and if their minds had not been utterly darkened. It is this sole strength of his whole position, and nothing else, which Paul, in his discourse, quickly perceives, firmly lays hold of, and keeps fast from the be ginning to the end. Book The Acts of the Apostles Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Acts of the Apostles Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by F. J. Foakes-Jackson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Acts of the Apostles, Vol. 1 The first volume of Prolegomena in this work must, therefore, be occupied with the historical aspect of the question. The background of Acts i.-xv. Is' Jewish, that of the last chapters mainly Gentile. The Christian background is common to both, but its characteristics are rapidly changing. The first volume, therefore, deals with these three points - contemporary Jewish history and religion, the organisation and general mental attitude of the world of the Roman Empire, the evolution of the early Christian preaching and ideas. In the second volume the literary phenomena of the book are the subject of investigation. A third volume will deal with the exegesis of the Text. Although various scholars have contributed to these volumes, the Editors are responsible for the whole, as, in order to give the work coherence, they have not scrupled to rearrange, abbreviate, or expand the chapters submitted to them and they are fully sensible of the patience displayed by their fellow-workers in accepting their suggestions. For the present volume the Editors acknowledge with gratitude the help which they have received from Canon Box and from Professor Wensink, as well as from the scholars whose definite contributions are printed. They are also greatly indebted to Miss Edith Coe for much help in the correction of proof. They have endeavoured to indicate their appreciation of the unfailing kindness and great learning of Professor George Foot Moore by dedicating to him this volume. Among many privileges which they have received in the United States they value his help as second only to his friendship. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Acts of the Apostles, Vol. 1 of 2: Explained The materials of this book were collected in a course of academical instruction, and prepared for publication, in the first instance, With a view to the peculiar wants of ministers and students. But after the first chapter was in type, the writer was induced to recommence the work upon a new plan, in the hope of making it more generally hseful, by the reduction of its size, and the omission of all matter supposed to be interesting only to professional' or educated readers. This Will account for the prominence given to the English ver sion, the exclusion (for the most part) of the Greek text, and the absence of any detailed reference to other writers. It Will be found, however, that the constant subject of the exposition is the inspired original, and that one of its main objects is to perfect the translation. Book The Acts of the Apostles I XIV Vol 1

Download or read book The Acts of the Apostles I XIV Vol 1 written by Joseph Rawson Lumby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Acts of the Apostles, I XIV, Vol. 1: With Introduction and Notes Thus, from the way in which this second account of the Ascension supplements and explains the former brief notice in the Gospel, it seems natural to accept the Acts as a narrative written with the purpose of continuing the history of the Christian Church after Christ's ascension, in the same manner in which the history of Christ's own deeds had been set forth in the Gospel. N ow the writer declares that his object in the first work had been to explain what Jesus eegcm to do and teach. He had not, any more than the other Evangelists, aimed at giving a complete life Of Jesus, but only an explanation of those principles of His teaching, and those great acts in His life, on which the foundations Of the new society were to be laid. If then the second book he meant to carry on the history in the same Spirit in which it had been commenced, we shall expect to find in it no more than what the disciples eegem to do and teach when Jesus was gone away from them. And such unity of purpose, and consequently of treatment, is all the more to be looked for because both books are written to the same person.
