Download or read book Indigenous Education Policy Equity and Intercultural Understanding in Latin America written by Regina Cortina and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-29 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comparative study of educational policies over the past two decades in Latin America. These policies, enacted through constitutional reforms, sought to protect the right of Indigenous peoples to a culturally inclusive education. The book assesses the impact of these policies on educational practice and the on-going challenges that countries still face in delivering an equitable and culturally responsive education to Indigenous children and youth. The chapters, each written by an expert in the field, demonstrate how policy changes are transforming education systems in Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico, and Peru. Going beyond the classroom, they highlight the significance of these reforms in promoting intercultural dialogue in Latin American societies.

Book The Education of Indigenous Citizens in Latin America

Download or read book The Education of Indigenous Citizens in Latin America written by Regina Cortina and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2014-01-06 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking volume describes unprecedented changes in education across Latin America, resulting from the endorsement of Indigenous peoples' rights through the development of intercultural bilingual education. Describing the collaboration between grassroots movements and transnational networks, the authors analyze how social change is taking place at the local and regional levels, and they present case studies that illuminate the expansion of intercultural bilingual education. This book is both a call to action for researchers, teachers, policy-makers and Indigenous leaders, and a primer for practitioners seeking to provide better learning opportunities for a diverse student body.

Book International Handbook of Early Childhood Education

Download or read book International Handbook of Early Childhood Education written by Marilyn Fleer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 1613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This international handbook gives a comprehensive overview of findings from longstanding and contemporary research, theory, and practices in early childhood education in the Northern and Southern hemispheres. The first volume of the handbook addresses theory, methodology, and the research activities and research needs of particular regions. The second volume examines in detail innovations and longstanding programs, curriculum and assessment, and conceptions and research into child, family and communities. The two volumes of this handbook address the current theory, methodologies and research needs of specific countries and provide insight into existing global similarities in early childhood practices. By paying special attention to what is happening in the larger world contexts, the volumes provide a representative overview of early childhood education practices and research, and redress the current North-South imbalance of published work on the subject.

Book Language Empires in Comparative Perspective

Download or read book Language Empires in Comparative Perspective written by Christel Stolz and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of empire is associated with economic and political mechanisms of dominance. For the last decades, however, there has been a lively debate concerning the question whether this concept can be transferred to the field of linguistics, specifically to research on situations of language spread on the one hand and concomitant marginalization of minority languages on the other. The authors who contributed to this volume concur as to the applicability of the notion of empire to language-related issues. They address the processes, potential merits and drawbacks of language spread as well as the marginalization of minority languages, language endangerment and revitalization, contact-induced language change, the emergence of mixed languages, and identity issues. An emphasis is on the dominance of non-Western languages such as Arabic, Chinese, and, particularly, Russian. The studies demonstrate that the emergence, spread and decline of language empires is a promising area of research, particularly from a comparative perspective.

Book The Routledge Handbook on the Influence of Built Environments on Diverse Childhoods

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook on the Influence of Built Environments on Diverse Childhoods written by Kate Bishop and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-01 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children and young people are often discussed as if they are homogenous groups. The reality is, of course, very different, with an enormous variation within each of these groups and in any domain of experience pertaining to childhood or adolescence. Driven by personal, sociocultural, geographic, or economic circumstances, many children and young people worldwide are experiencing a totally different reality to those who fit with more mainstream patterns of childhood. This has substantial implications for their sociophysical environmental experience and our understanding of their physical environmental needs. The aim of this book is to draw attention to these alternate realities for a number of these groups of children and young people, highlighting the unique and different considerations associated with their particular circumstances in each instance, and identifying the repercussions for their physical environmental needs. Ultimately, this book creates an evidence-based discussion which can be used by designers, planners and policy makers, and those delivering services and programs to children and young people as a basis to make informed decisions on how to work with the groups of children and young people in our book for better environmental provision.

Book Bilingualism and Bilingual Education Politics Policies and Practices in a Globalized Society

Download or read book Bilingualism and Bilingual Education Politics Policies and Practices in a Globalized Society written by B. Gloria Guzmán Johannessen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-14 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a multinational perspective on the juxtaposition of language and politics. Bringing together an international group of authors, it offers theoretical and historical constructs on bilingualism and bilingual education. It highlights the sociocultural complexities of bilingualism in societies where indigenous and other languages coexist with colonial dominant and other prestigious immigrant languages. It underlines the linguistic diaspora and expansion of English as the world’s lingua franca and their impact on indigenous and other minority languages. Finally, it features models of language teaching and teacher education. This book challenges the existent global conditions of non-dominant languages and furthers the discourse on language politics and policies. It does so by pointing out the need to change the bilingual/multilingual educational paradigm across nations and all levels of educational systems.

Book Education in Indigenous Nomadic and Travelling Communities

Download or read book Education in Indigenous Nomadic and Travelling Communities written by Rosarii Griffin and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-06-26 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education in Indigenous, Nomadic and Travelling Communities provides a thorough examination of up-to-date case studies of educational provision to travelling communities and indigenous people in their homelands or in host countries. Education is usually under-utilised during phases of transition. In many instances, indigenous groups and travelling people, including nomads, do not have educational opportunities equal to that of their settled counterpart-citizens. For such groups, this results in early school leaving, high school drop-out rates, low school attendance and low success rates. Indeed, indigenous, traveling and nomadic groups often begin their working life at an early age and often experience difficulties penetrating the formal employment arena. In this volume international researchers analyse the internal and external factors affecting educational provision to travelling, nomadic and indigenous groups. A comparative examination of the issues is enabled through the global case studies including the Roma people in Europe; indigenous groups in Malaysia; the Gypsies of England; the Travellers of Ireland; the Sami nomadic people of Scandinavia and Russia as well as the Amazonian Indians of Latin America.
