Download or read book The Researcher s Library of Ancient Texts Volume 3 The Septuagint 1851 Translation by Sir Lancelot C L Brenton written by Thomas Horn and published by Defense Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Septuagint (or "LXX," or "Greek Old Testament") is a translation of the Hebrew Old Testament and certain Apocrypha, which was sponsored according to tradition in the late 3rd century BC by Ptolemy II Philadelphus, the king of Ptolemaic Egypt (283 BC to 246 BC). The Greek translation was originally created for use by the Alexandrian Jews who were fluent in Koine Greek, but not in Hebrew. Thus the Septuagint is sometimes called the "Apostle's Bible" and the one that Jesus and his disciples would have had access to. It is quoted in the New Testament by writers such as the Apostle Paul, and remained the Scripture of use by the Apostolic Fathers. The translation of the Septuagint into English by Sir Lancelot C. L. Brenton was first published in 1851 and was based primarily upon the Codex Vaticanus, one of the oldest extant manuscripts of the Greek Bible. It remains the standard of use by many scholars and students of Scripture and history. Contained in this volume (The Researchers Library of Ancient Texts Volume III): The English Translation of the Greek Septuagint Bible, Including the Apocrypha.

Book excerpt: Now fully revised and corrected in for this Second Edition. The Septuagint (LXX), the ancient Greek translation of Jewish sacred writings (i.e. the Old Testament), is of great importance in the history of both Judaism and Christianity. Translated from Hebrew and other originals in the two centuries before Jesus, the Septuagint provides important information about the history of biblical text. It captures a moment in time, illuminating for us how Greek-speaking Jews of that time read and interpreted the Hebrew Scriptures that they translated. In its time, it made the Jewish Scriptures accessible to peoples and cultures outside of Judaism through koine Greek, the common language of the Mediterranean world. The Septuagint was the Bible of Greek speaking Jews; it was the Bible of the first Christians. It is cited in the New Testament and by the great luminaries of early Christianity. In this edition of the famed translation by Lancelot C. Brenton, many archaisms have been removed and personal pronouns rendered consistent with modern English-yet without sacrificing any of the accuracy, power, or beauty of the original translation.Published by Ex Fontibus Co.

Book The Apocryphal New Testament Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apocryphal New Testament We are glad to note a decidedly increasing interest in regard to the Apocryphal Books as evidenced by increased sales. Man, conscious of his weakness, looks around for guidance. Catholics offer him an infallible Church. Protestants, an infallible Bible. We believe that infallibility belongs only to God and although inspiration may not be certain for these Apocryphal Books, yet for more than three centuries they were accepted by the early Christians as inspired, and therefore should be regarded with interest. The theory of Inspiration has been altered more than once since these books were rejected as uninspired. It was once altered when men began to appeal to the Greek and the Hebrew against the Latin Vulgate. It was altered again when they appealed to lexicons and grammars and the usage of contemporary writers against authoritative interpretation. It was altered again when the science of textual criticism shattered the exclusive claims of the received text. And every alteration, though a shock to the faith Of some, and a trial to all, led to closer study, clearer insight, and a more reverential acceptance of the sacred volume, and all connected therewith.
