Book excerpt: As the Great Tribulation draws near, Zonera reckons with her new-found faith and embarks on a journey of self-discovery, survival, and redemption. Will she muster enough hope to succeed? Zonera, a twenty-one-year-old Pakistani woman, sits in a sterile fertility clinic and dreads the events that will happen next. She's seven months pregnant, wrestling with school, wife duties, and the anxiety of her baby's gender. If it's a boy, not only will her harsh and forbidding husband, Akeem, be pleased, but she might also be able to breathe a little lighter. There is no place for a little girl in the cruel world she lives in. The way she's been treated by Akeem and everyone else around her weighs heavy on her heart. It has to be a boy, she allows herself to hope amid the buzzing in her mind thanks to the mysterious man in the waiting room with her. What she doesn't realize is that this man, with his wrinkled eyes and benevolent reassurances, will signal what's to come... for her and for the rest of mankind. Confused, she tries to make sense of the man's presence with her OBGYN, Dr. Liu -- a kind and gentle Christian woman who, ironically, found safety in a Muslim community. Now curious, Zonera opens up to Dr. Liu about her worries and the latter returns the favor by sharing her faith. For some reason, Zonera gets a strange sense of hope for better things to come. But, her reverie is cut short as a series of bewildering events starts taking place. Now, Zonera is forced to reckon with what's happening in front of her and tries to make sense of it all. "The Secret Life of Pets meets The Walking Dead" in this big-hearted, boundlessly beautiful romp through the Apocalypse, where a foul-mouthed crow is humanity's only chance to survive Seattle's zombie problem (Karen Joy Fowler, PEN/Faulkner Award-winning author). S.T., a domesticated crow, is a bird of simple pleasures: hanging out with his owner Big Jim, trading insults with Seattle's wild crows (i.e. "those idiots"), and enjoying the finest food humankind has to offer: Cheetos ®. But when Big Jim's eyeball falls out of his head, S.T. starts to think something's not quite right. His tried-and-true remedies—from beak-delivered beer to the slobbering affection of Big Jim's loyal but dim-witted dog, Dennis—fail to cure Big Jim's debilitating malady. S.T. is left with no choice but to abandon his old life and venture out into a wild and frightening new world with his trusty steed Dennis, where he suddenly discovers that the neighbors are devouring one other. Local wildlife is abuzz with rumors of Seattle's dangerous new predators. Humanity's extinction has seemingly arrived, and the only one determined to save it is a cowardly crow whose only knowledge of the world comes from TV. What could possibly go wrong? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remarkable studies in the New Testament have recovered the fact that the gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ, was apocalyptic good news—God’s redemptive action within history. Today, for more and more people, the sheer scope of an evolutionary universe renders life on Earth as utterly insignificant, religion as nothing more than superstition. And now, in the Anthropocene, we on the pale blue dot live in an apocalyptic age in which cataclysmic issue after cataclysmic issue threaten the future of the planet. The faith of the early church was in an apocalyptic cosmic Christ unleashing within history God’s good news of a new creation. Set within the world as we now know it, this gives meaning to the cosmos and life wherever it is found around any star. Screened from view for over a millennium during mission to non-apocalyptic cultures, now is the time for a new paradigm for church, the “apocalyptic church” for an apocalyptic age to replace the denominational church. What a difference this makes to faith, worship, and the role of the church in an apocalyptic future.

  • Author : Bart D. Ehrman

  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Jesus written by Bart D. Ehrman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999-09-23 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this highly accessible discussion, Bart Ehrman examines the most recent textual and archaeological sources for the life of Jesus, along with the history of first-century Palestine, drawing a fascinating portrait of the man and his teachings. Ehrman shows us what historians have long known about the Gospels and the man who stands behind them. Through a careful evaluation of the New Testament (and other surviving sources, including the more recently discovered Gospels of Thomas and Peter), Ehrman proposes that Jesus can be best understood as an apocalyptic prophet--a man convinced that the world would end dramatically within the lifetime of his apostles and that a new kingdom would be created on earth. According to Ehrman, Jesus' belief in a coming apocalypse and his expectation of an utter reversal in the world's social organization not only underscores the radicalism of his teachings but also sheds light on both the appeal of his message to society's outcasts and the threat he posed to Jerusalem's established leadership.

Revelation 6:15-17 Accused of domestic terrorism, Emilio Vega was on his way to a Department of Global Security death camp when the mega-quake hit. The streets beneath his transport vehicle buckled, tossing the van in the air like a toy. He survived the crash, but the world is now in ruins. However, for a condemned man, this disaster may be just the lucky break he needed. Emilio has been left behind! Six detainees were in the van prior to the quake. However, only Emilio and one other prisoner were still around when he regained consciousness. Emilio searched the surrounding area, but to no avail. The missing prisoners believed in an event called the rapture, when Jesus would collect His saints before raining down unbearable wrath on the planet's remaining inhabitants. Can Emilio and Mackenzie survive the gauntlet of destruction known as the Great Tribulation? Mackenzie Thompson, the other prisoner still present, is convinced that it was the rapture and that they've been left behind. She also believes a time of unparalleled torment is about to be poured out upon the earth. Emilio and Mackenzie have a place to go, but it is hundreds of miles away. The roads are unusable, and the two of them are fugitives on the run. If this truly is the Great Tribulation, it's off to a bad start. Don't miss this exciting new end-times thriller. Book Wallace Stevens And The Apocalyptic Mode

Download or read book Wallace Stevens And The Apocalyptic Mode written by Malcolm Woodland and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wallace Stevens and the Apocalyptic Mode focuses on Stevens’s doubled stance toward the apocalyptic past: his simultaneous use of and resistance to apocalyptic language, two contradictory forces that have generated two dominant and incompatible interpretations of his work. The book explores the often paradoxical roles of apocalyptic and antiapocalyptic rhetoric in modernist and postmodernist poetry and theory, particularly as these emerge in the poetry of Stevens and Jorie Graham. This study begins with an examination of the textual and generic issues surrounding apocalypse, culminating in the idea of apocalyptic language as a form of “discursive mastery” over the mayhem of events. Woodland provides an informative religious/historical discussion of apocalypse and, engaging with such critics as Parker, Derrida, and Fowler, sets forth the paradoxes and complexities that eventually challenge any clear dualities between apocalyptic and antiapocalyptic thinking. Woodland then examines some of Stevens’s wartime essays and poems and describes Stevens’s efforts to salvage a sense of self and poetic vitality in a time of war, as well as his resistance to the possibility of cultural collapse. Woodland discusses the major postwar poems “Credences of Summer” and “The Auroras of Autumn” in separate chapters, examining the interaction of (anti)apocalyptic modes with, respectively, pastoral and elegy. The final chapter offers a perspective on Stevens’s place in literary history by examining the work of a contemporary poet, Jorie Graham, whose poetry quotes from Stevens’s oeuvre and shows other marks of his influence. Woodland focuses on Graham's 1997 collection The Errancy and shows that her antiapocalyptic poetry involves a very different attitude toward the possibility of a radical break with a particular cultural or aesthetic stance. Wallace Stevens and the Apocalyptic Mode, offering a new understanding of Stevens’s position in literary history, will greatly interest literary scholars and students.
