Book Sacred Prostitution in the Ancient Greek World From Aphrodite to Baubo to Cassandra and Beyond

Download or read book Sacred Prostitution in the Ancient Greek World From Aphrodite to Baubo to Cassandra and Beyond written by Morris Silver and published by Ugarit-Verlag - Buch- und Medienhandel GmbH. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book does not intend to demonstrate that Greeks and other ancient Mediterranean peoples, men and women, married and unmarried, sought and participated in sex for its own sake. That is, it is taken as obvious, a given, that they were able to separate sex for pleasure from sex for reproduction. There never were human beings who concerned themselves only with “fertility”. Neither, does this study seek to demonstrate that some ancient Greeks were willing to provide sexual services to partners in return for the receipt of nonsexual benefits. Again, this is self-evident. Nor does this study intend to show that the ancient Mediterranean world was familiar with individuals and enterprises that regularly earned incomes by selling sexual services. Clearly, the ancient world knew prostitution as an occupation and as a form of enterprise. In an article published by Ugarit-Forschungen in 2008, Silver (2006a) challenged the view that temple/sacred prostitution did not exist in the ancient Near East. Contrary to such scholars as Julia Assante (1998, 2003), Martha T. Roth (2006) and Vinciane Pirenne-Delforge (2010), ample evidence indicates that it did. For the convenience of readers this article is included as a Supplement to the present volume. The original article has been reformatted to correct some typographical errors and to make it blend seamlessly into the present volume but otherwise it is unchanged. More recent materials from the ancient Near East are considered mostly in footnotes, however. The present study seeks to leap beyond this finding by showing that temple prostitution also flourished in the ancient Mediterranean. That it did is of course an “old” view, but the old supporting arguments often lack rigor and even clarity and the supporting evidence is fragmentary, contradictory and often facially absurd (e.g. Herodotus 1.199.1–5). Work of this kind has been discredited by scholars such as Fay Glinister (2000) and Stephanie Lynn Budin (2008).

One of the most widely worshipped and popular deities in Greek antiquity, Aphrodite emerges from the imaginations of the ancient Greek writers and artists as a multifaceted, powerful and charismatic figure. This volume explores the importance of Aphrodite for the ancient Greeks, as well as her enduring influence as a symbol of beauty, adornment, love and sexuality in contemporary culture. In a wide-ranging investigation of the universality of Aphrodite’s power and significance, this volume illuminates the numerous intricate levels of divinity embodied by the alluring figure of Aphrodite. Aphrodite offers new insights into the ancient texts and artistic representations of the goddess, as well as a comprehensive survey of the current scholarship about the origins and interpretations of Aphrodite, whilst also highlighting her eternal popular appeal across cultures and generations. A goddess of love who is not afraid to enter the battlefield; a goddess of bodily adornment who is the first to appear totally nude; a goddess born of the sea who emerges into the open sky: Aphrodite is a polyvalent deity, plural in nature, function and significance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the Hellespont describes in lively detail the remarkable literature which Turkey has inspired for two thousand years. Turkey lies at the crossroads of history. For millennia, Anatolia has been crossed and re-crossed by waves of conquering civilizations - Hittites, Persians, Romans and Ottomans - who have created a country as varied as it is possible to find in the world. With a climate and landscape as diverse as its past, Turkey has proved an alluring and yet sometimes challenging destination for westerners throughout the ages. This, and the hospitality of its people, has ensured that countless visitors, from classical times to the present, have fallen under the spell of Turkey. At a time when Turkey's position on the fringe may be set to change to a deeper involvement in Europe, the need for Europeans to understand the country is even more compelling. The range of travel writing represented in this book shows how, while political circumstances may change, the lure of Turkey remains constant.

Book The Greek Poetry of Summons and Invitation

Download or read book The Greek Poetry of Summons and Invitation written by Francis Cairns and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-09-23 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greek Poetry of Summons and Invitation assembles and studies for the first time the numerous poetic invitations and summonses of Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic Greece. These poems and passages come from epic, lyric, dramatic, epigrammatic, and epigraphic sources. Most of them are by celebrated Greek poets ― Homer, Sappho, Alcaeus, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, Theocritus, Callimachus, Apollonius, among others. Analysis of this poetic corpus associates it with the ‘kletikon’, an ancient rhetorical genre of content, and reveals everywhere in it the commonplaces of that genre, thus allowing new sub-types of the kletikon to be discovered, and the development of the genre over the centuries to be charted. When individual invitations and summonses are viewed against this generic background, their originality and merits emerge along with their poets’ unique voices. Each summons and invitation is presented, translated, discussed in detail, and, when part of a longer work, linked to its context. This volume is directed to scholars and students of Classics; scholars of the Latin equivalent genre, the ‘vocatio’, which persisted into the Renaissance, can also find in it an intellectual model.

Book Aphrodite and Eros

    Book Details:
  • Author : Barbara Breitenberger
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2013-05-13
  • ISBN : 1135883777
  • Pages : 307 pages

Download or read book Aphrodite and Eros written by Barbara Breitenberger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a groundbreaking revision of the popular image of Aphrodite and Eros that lives on in Roman poetry (Venus and Cupid) and has inspired artists for centuries. An interdisciplinary analysis of the Archaic period - using literary, iconographical, and cultic evidence - shows the distinct concept behind the two deities of love. Aphrodite's character, sphere of influence, and function feature in her traditional myths and are well reflected in cult. Eros, however, was not yet a similarly personified mythical figure at that stage, nor did he have an individual cult. Breitenberger follows the different stages of the development of Eros's personality. Originally a cosmic entity and an unpersonified aspect of Aphrodite, he was given his mythical identity by successive archaic lyric poets who were particularly keen to mythologize a male counterpart to the established love-goddess Aphrodite. This male love-god turns out to be the divinized homoerotic ideal of the male aristocracy 'worshipped' at their symposia. The development of the male love-god is taken as an example to demonstrate that poets' artistic innovation as well as their social and historical background played an important role in creating Greek mythology.

Download or read book Deities Demons written by Charles J. Schneider and published by Fiction4All and Double Dragon Books. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extensively revised and re-written in a more professional and experienced style, Fiction4all proudly presents these second-edition versions of Charles J. Schneider’s two debut novellas in a single volume. United by the common themes of romance and tasteful sensuality but contrasting sharply in fiction motifs, CYTHEREA provides light-hearted and witty entertainment while WITH TOWER AND TURRETS, CROWNED leads the reader into a dark realm of treachery and witchcraft. CYTHEREA, positioned in the forefront of this anthology, tells the tongue-in-cheek tale of Jamie Broussard, a Professor of Anthropology and Mythology at Yale, who finds himself drawn into a digital relationship with Cytherea Sagapo, the author of an obscure treatise on the legend of Adonis and Aphrodite. In due course, the curious professor decides that he must meet her, and travels to Cytherea’s hometown of Paphos, Cyprus, in order to do so; but when he arrives, it seems clear that his virtual girlfriend is actually the real Aphrodite and that he, surprisingly, may be the reincarnation of her one and only true love, Adonis! This unique story, which teeters between reality and a surrealistic dream until the very last page, features portrayals of the ancient Greek deities set in modern day, and will appeal to lovers of paranormal fiction and mythology alike. WITH TOWER AND TURRETS, CROWNED takes place in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland during medieval times, where a powerful Gaelic warlord named Rhian MacDomhnuill falls deeply in love with Gwyneth, a beautiful and sultry peasant maiden. This tightly plotted tale of passion and demonic sorcery begins and ends in the highest room of Dunyvaig Castle’s tower, where Rhian must face his spiritual nemesis embodied in his frigid wife, Sif: an Icelandic princess with a dark and evil soul. Although the action takes place in a brief five-hour timeframe on a cold January night and plays out exclusively within the confining walls of Rhian’s stone fortress, a rich two-and-a-half year back-story is related creatively by the author in a series of flashbacks, memories and dreams. Based loosely on an old Scottish legend, WITH TOWER AND TURRETS, CROWNED is a historically-based psychological fantasy filled with intrigue, seduction, and magic.

Book First Corinthians Bible Commentary a Bible commentary on First Corinthians

Download or read book First Corinthians Bible Commentary a Bible commentary on First Corinthians written by and published by Brad Price. This book was released on with total page 824 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This verse-by-verse commentary on First Corinthians offers a thorough but very understandable commentary on the entirety of Paul’s letter to the Corinthians. Since the First Corinthians letter touches on a number of different subjects, this volume also offers some special studies to more fully explore what the Bible says on additional topics like civil government, the role of women in the church, spiritual gifts, etc. If you want to have a better understanding of First Corinthians, this commentary will help you! Here is a small sample of the text: Introduction to First Corinthians 13: Some consider 1 Cor. 13 the “love chapter of the Bible” or a “parenthetical description of love,” but this chapter is actually an integral part of Paul’s discussion about spiritual gifts. Since the Corinthians were rude, jealous, and boastful, it was necessary for them “to go beyond their present pursuit. To the apostle, the development of the character of the person was superior to the exercise of the gift. His contrasts (chap. 13) are clear: gifts without love vs. gifts with love, and the permanence of love vs. the temporal nature of gifts” (Gromacki, p. 159). Stated another way, verses 1-3 affirm that spiritual gifts were worthless without love, verses 4-7 affirm that love was superior to the gifts, and verses 8-13 assert that spiritual gifts were temporal but love abides. Although 1 Cor. 13 may seem familiar to many, this chapter is often one of the most misunderstood parts of the New Testament. The Corinthians’ elevation of spiritual gifts over love is seen in places such as 12:13-25; 14:27-33, 40. It is also found by contrasting the qualities in 1 Cor. 13 with other sections of this epistle. For instance, love “suffers long” (13:4), but tongue speakers at Corinth were impatient (14:27-28). Love does not “envy” (13:4), but the Corinthians envied the gifts of others (chapter 12). Love “is not puffed up” (13:4), but tongue speakers were proud (compare 13:1). Love causes people to act in a kind and orderly way, but some of the Corinthians’ behavior was disorderly (14:23, 40). Love is not “unseemly,” but the Corinthians were at risk of unseemly behavior in their families (1 Cor. 7:36) as well as their Sunday assemblies (1 Cor. 11:2-16, 17-34). Agape love “does not seek its own” (13:5), but these Christians were seeking their own (see 1 Cor. 8 and the discussion about idol meat). Love keeps people from “rejoicing in evil” (13:6), but the Corinthians rejoiced in evil (1 Cor. 5:2, 6). There were various things that “provoked” these brethren (13:5) and it seems they were “keeping a record of evil” (1 Cor. 13:5). It was time for the members of this congregation to show some spiritual maturity and demonstrate the type of love that “bears all things, believes all things, hopes in all things, and endures all things” (1 Cor. 13:7).
