Bestselling and Goodreads Choice Award winning poet Trista Mateer takes a magical approach to self-care with her new collection, Aphrodite Made Me Do It. In this empowering and feminist retelling, Mateer transforms the mythology of the goddess into 224 pages of modern poetry and full-color artwork. Broken into sections alternating between the perspective of The Poet and Aphrodite herself, the work within tackles the timeless topic of love--romantic, platonic, and self-love. The collection addresses issues like heartbreak, sexuality, womanhood, trauma, and the restorative power in taking control of your own lore, speaking your truths, and rewriting your origin story. If you let her, by the end of this book, Aphrodite will make you believe in the possibility of your own healing. "If you were only made to be beautiful, we wouldn't have put you down here in the dirt."Perfect for fans of Amanda Lovelace, Nikita Gill, Rupi Kaur, Elizabeth Acevedo, Rick Riordan, and Madeline Miller; or anyone interested in Greek myths, tarot, and Instagram poetry. This is the first book in the Myth & Magick series, which also includes Artemis Made Me Do It and Persephone Made Me Do It.

Book Ode to Aphrodite The Poems and Fragments of Sappho

Download or read book Ode to Aphrodite The Poems and Fragments of Sappho written by Sappho and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sappho (c. 630–c. 570 BC) was an Archaic Greek poet from the island of Lesbos famous for her lyric poetry. Also known by such names as the "Tenth Muse" and "The Poetess", Sappho was a prolific poet widely regarded as one of the greatest lyric poets of ancient times. As well as an extraordinary poet, she also represents a symbol of romantic love between women, the word lesbian and sapphic originating from her name and home island. The majority of Sappho's work is lost and what remains only does so as fragments. Despite this, her work has and continues to influence that of others significantly. This pocket-sized volume contains 45 of Sappho's existing poems and fragments, translated and interpreted by John Myres O'Hara and Henry de Vere Stacpoole. Contents include: "An Introduction by H. De Vere Stacpoole", "Sapphics by Algernon Charles Swinburne", "Poems Translated by John Myres O'hara", and "Fragments Translated by Henry De Vere Stacpoole". Wine Dark Press is proudly publishing this brand new collection of classic poems, now complete with an introductory essay by Charles Swinburne.

Book Aphrodite s Daughter

Download or read book Aphrodite s Daughter written by Becky Gould Gibson and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From villages in Crete to Carolina farms to San Francisco pavement, the women in these poems struggle to live by their own lights, despite pressure for them to serve as mere appendages to men. Aphrodite's Daughter tells stories of women in myth, history, art, and contemporary life. The goddess's daughter, fed up with her role in her mother's story, says to her: "i'm leaving--i'm walking out/of your myth finally--i need a mother not a love goddess. . . . " This volume springs from the sense that, as Adrienne Rich reminds us, under patriarchy women often feel "wildly unmothered."

Book Aphrodite and Other Poems

Download or read book Aphrodite and Other Poems written by Dana Richardson and published by . This book was released on 2002-04 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As its title suggests, Aphrodite and Other Poems, is an exploration of the mythological dimension of sexual experience in an attempt to reinvest its now profane character with its ancient sacrality. The mythological symbols are treated as universals that resonate at some deep level of consciousness whether or not the reader is acquainted with the stories. These poems exemplify the view that poetry is a sensual and, primarily, a musical art while it, of course, must also maintain a basic standard of intelligibility that does not strain the reader's interpretive powers to the point of exhaustion. My primary sources of inspiration have been my muses and the landscapes in which I have lived, in particular, Greece.

Book Aphrodite and Eros

  • Author : Barbara Breitenberger
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2013-05-13
  • ISBN : 1135883777
  • Pages : 307 pages

Download or read book Aphrodite and Eros written by Barbara Breitenberger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a groundbreaking revision of the popular image of Aphrodite and Eros that lives on in Roman poetry (Venus and Cupid) and has inspired artists for centuries. An interdisciplinary analysis of the Archaic period - using literary, iconographical, and cultic evidence - shows the distinct concept behind the two deities of love. Aphrodite's character, sphere of influence, and function feature in her traditional myths and are well reflected in cult. Eros, however, was not yet a similarly personified mythical figure at that stage, nor did he have an individual cult. Breitenberger follows the different stages of the development of Eros's personality. Originally a cosmic entity and an unpersonified aspect of Aphrodite, he was given his mythical identity by successive archaic lyric poets who were particularly keen to mythologize a male counterpart to the established love-goddess Aphrodite. This male love-god turns out to be the divinized homoerotic ideal of the male aristocracy 'worshipped' at their symposia. The development of the male love-god is taken as an example to demonstrate that poets' artistic innovation as well as their social and historical background played an important role in creating Greek mythology.
