Book excerpt: Twb is the story of a boy who has been gifted with some special powers to access information bases. However, the purpose of the book is not simply to demonstrate how important correct information is for making useful decisions. However, the real purpose of this book is to emphasize on everyone, i.e., people of all ages, the importance of maintaining their initial instincts of siding with good, right and truth. It is a well known fact that as we grow older, we tend to lose our innocence and develop various types of barriers to defend the positions that we believe we have been forced to adopt in our lives for the sake of our survival. Twb believes that to the extent possible, we must all struggle to maintain our clear conscience that was given to us when we were born. It is this endeavor on the part of all persons alive on this planet that will achieve the much desired goals of peace and stability around the world, which will then lead to a reduction of disequilibrium and promote social good.

Book excerpt: A companion volume to the Emmy Award–winning PBS® series—interviews with “an essential voice in our national conversation” (Brian Williams, MSNBC anchor). This “provocative” and “absorbing” (Star Tribune) companion book to Bill Moyer’s acclaimed PBS series invites readers into conversations with some of the most captivating voices on the scene today, in what Kirkus Reviews calls “a glittering array of discussions.” From Jon Stewart on politics and media to Michael Pollan on food, The Wire creator David Simon on the mean streets of our cities, James Cone and Shelby Steele on race in the age of Obama, Robert Bly and Nikki Giovanni on the power of poetry, Barbara Ehrenreich on the hard times of working Americans, and Karen Armstrong on faith and compassion, Moyer’s own intelligence and insight match that of his guests and their discussions animate many of the most salient issues of our time. With extensive commentary from Moyers, marked by his customary “respect, intelligence, curiosity, humor, and graciousness,” here are the debates; cultural currents; and, above all, lively minds that shape the conversation of democracy (Booklist). “In an era of much instant and ephemeral talk, it is a pleasurable thing to hold this ‘book of ideas.’” —Publishers Weekly “[Moyers] has always been about something beyond the moment. Or put another way, while everyone else in the media has been exploring topography, Moyers has been exploring geology.” —Los Angeles Times

Download or read book New York s Finest written by Theodore Josiha Haig and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-05-04 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story about the lives of six men from the 'View' who formed a pact, and vowed they all would become the finest amongst New York's finest and survive to maintain the 'circle of friends' and the conflicts they endure when fighting crime involves their childhood friends. It is these types of relationships that are deeply rooted and sometime unexplainable. They are more than just oxymoron expressions. They depicted the good and the bad, the hero and the villain, the cop and the criminal that are rarely acknowledged as acceptable in our society because they bash anomalies that emerged in childhood socialized relationships, and takes shape long before we separate into the virtuous and the questionable. Consequently, there is evidence that the way they unfold are intuitive and instinctive qualities developed in order to survive, growing up in these mean streets. Little did they know that the brotherhood, the trust, the bond and strength of the 'circle' would be challenged and tested 'big time'? And in a way, they never imagined. In a way, that could destroy their 'brotherhood', possibly forever, as reported by the investigative journalist, Linda Acevedo, from the New York Daily News. She also was the lead reporter charge with uncovering who actually killed the three bank executives during a bank robbery. The story is also staged during the rescue, recovery, and compensation stages of 9/11 serving to create a complex set of circumstances surrounding the 'circle of friends'. Ms. Acevedo maintained... "The bank robbery and triple murders had to be planned for months in advanced, or perhaps even years, Ms. Acevedo would argue. This unknown suspect or suspects had to know that a meeting was planned and that all three of these victims had to be coming together at a designated time. That is, the same time the robbery was planned. "Perhaps the robbery was planned as a cover up," she would also pose to her readers as a viable question. The conflict experience throughout the story offers no comfort or envy for the officers faced with similar sets of circumstances. It has to place a tremendous burden on them, on a daily basis. Granted, they are law enforcement officers first. And upholding the law is supposed to be their motto, first and foremost. But the reality is that a law enforcement officer in New York City, like in many of America's cities, has to know how to 'roll'. And knowing how to 'roll' could very well mean, managing your health and safety for at the very least, another day, or not taking another brother's life, especially if you knew him and he grew up in the 'View'.

Download or read book Housing Estates in Europe written by Daniel Baldwin Hess and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book explores the formation and socio-spatial trajectories of large housing estates in Europe. Are these estates clustered or scattered? Which social groups originally had access to residential space in housing estates? What is the size, scale and geography of housing estates, their architectural and built environment composition, services and neighbourhood amenities, and metropolitan connectivity? How do housing estates contribute to the urban mosaic of neighborhoods by ethnic and socio-economic status? What types of policies and planning initiatives have been implemented in order to prevent the social downgrading of housing estates? The collection of chapters in this book addresses these questions from a new perspective previously unexplored in scholarly literature. The social aspects of housing estates are thoroughly investigated (including socio-demographic and economic characteristics of current and past inhabitants; ethnicity and segregation patterns; population dynamics; etc.), and the physical composition of housing estates is described in significant detail (including building materials; building form; architectural and landscape design; built environment characteristics; etc.). This book is timely because the recent global economic crisis and Europe’s immigration crisis demand a thorough investigation of the role large housing estates play in poverty and ethnic concentration. Through case studies of housing estates in 14 European centers, the book also identifies policy measures that have been used to address challenges in housing estates throughout Europe.
