Book excerpt: The essential guide for mountaineering in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park and Westland Tai Poutini National Park. The mountains of Aoraki Mount Cook National Park and Westland Tai Poutini National Park contain some of the best mountaineering and transalpine tramping in the world and make up New Zealands most popular alpine climbing region. These two national parks are covered in their entirety in this latest edition of the New Zealand Alpine Clubs top-selling mountaineering guidebook. All new routes recorded since the last (2001) edition are included, and specific attention is given to how the mountains and access routes have been affected by climate change. The expanded coverage area now includes the lush, rugged, and previously overlooked valleys on the west side of the Main Divide, including the Callery, lower Balfour, Cook/Weheka, Copland, Douglas, and Karangarua catchments. Because information on these valleys has been difficult to find for so long, they still host several major unclimbed features. There is also a new chapter on climbs from Aoraki Mount Cook Village, for those passing through with only a couple of days available for climbing. The authors love for New Zealands mountains, fascination with climbing history, meticulous eye for detail, and passion for engaging with climbers has resulted in an up-to-date, reliable, and comprehensive guide the definitive guidebook for the Aoraki-Tai Poutini region.

Book The Cold Inside

Download or read book The Cold Inside written by Paul Hersey and published by Di Angelo Publications. This book was released on 2022-07-07 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mountains may inspire or repel. For climbers, they offer an opportunity for extreme adventure, as well as elusive, precious moments of feeling truly alive. The Cold Inside takes an intimate look at what it takes to climb. With a unique focus on New Zealand's breathtaking, unparalleled landscape, seasoned mountaineer and award-winning author Paul Hersey is profoundly introspective, and his passion for his crafts — storytelling and climbing — is evident from the first pages. A mix of adventure narrative, prose, and memoir, this book explores the psyche of climbers. It's as much an unflinching recount of risk and loss as it is a love letter to nature, both facets heightened through the deep connection that climbing provides. Drawing on decades of experience, Hersey artfully examines how such a distinct perspective influences everyday life, particularly in his homeland Aotearoa / New Zealand, where nature is equally giving and exacting. The Cold Inside is a personal, searching journey towards understanding the inspiration as well as the cost of climbing mountains.

Book Plantations and Protected Areas

Download or read book Plantations and Protected Areas written by Brett M. Bennett and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2015-12-18 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How global forest management shifted from an integrated conservation model to a bifurcated system of timber plantations and protected areas. Today, the world's forests are threatened by global warming, growing demand for wood products, and increasing pressure to clear tropical forests for agricultural use. Economic globalization has enabled Western corporations to export timber processing jobs and import cheap wood products from developing countries. Timber plantations of exotic, fast-growing species supply an ever-larger amount of the world's wood. In response, many countries have established forest areas protected from development. In this book, Brett Bennett views today's forestry issues from a historical perspective. The separation of wood production from the protection of forests, he shows, stems from entangled environmental, social, political, and economic factors. This divergence—driven by the concomitant intensification of production and creation of vast protected areas—is reshaping forest management systems both public and private. Bennett shows that plantations and protected areas evolved from, and then undermined, an earlier integrated forest management system that sought both to produce timber and to conserve the environment. He describes the development of the science and profession of forestry in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Europe; discusses the twentieth-century creation of timber plantations in the Americas, Asia, Africa, and Australia; and examines the controversies over deforestation that led to the establishment of protected areas. Bennett argues that the problems associated with the bifurcation of forest management—including the loss of forestry knowledge necessary to manage large ecosystems for diverse purposes—suggest that a more integrated model would be preferable.
