Nach Schluss der Vorlesungen empfing Herr Professor J oachimsthal das Manuscript und. Hatte nach eingehender Prüfung nichts Wesentliches daran auszusetzen; doch unterblieb die Herausgabe, wohl weil andere Gebiete der Mathematik, namentlich die Elemente der analytischen Geometrie, den hochverehrten Herrn beschäftigten. Wenn der Unter zeichnete erst jetzt, nachdem so viele Jahre verflossen sind, sich ent schlossen hat, die Vorträge herauszugeben, so liegt der Grund haupt sächlich darin, dass er lange Anstand genommen hat, selber die letzte Hand an die Druckfertigstellung zu legen. Als er aber einmal daran gegangen war, gaben ihm die hohen Vorzuge des Werkes den Muth, diese Arbeit zu Ende zu bringen, indem er hoffte, dass, was etwa an der Art der Abfassung den Beifall der Kenner nicht haben sollte, über den inneren Vörzugen der Vorlesungen verziehen werden würde. Als solche Vorzüge sei es gestattet, hier und zwar nicht bloss nach der Meinung des Herausgebers, sondern auch nach dem Ur theile von namhaften Gelehrten, denen das Werk jetzt zur Prüfung vorgelegen hat nur hervorzuheben, dass die Vorlesungen ein be stimmtes scharf abgegrenztes Gebiet in fasslicher und eleganter Darstellung behandeln, namentlich auch in ihnen die verschiedenen Diciplinen der Mathematik in geistreicher Weise zur Lösung der Probleme herangezogen sind, wie besonders die Geometrie an vielen Stellen die rechnende Lösung vorbereitet, oder ihr nachfolgend die gefundenen Resultate deutet.
