Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Schoolmistress and Other Stories (1920) is a collection of short stories by Russian writer Anton Chekhov. "The Schoolmistress" was written in 1897 and published in an issue of Moscow's daily newspaper Russkiye Vedomosti. Even for Chekhov, whose work is characteristically bleak and noted for its unsparing realism, the title story of this collection is particularly hopeless. And yet, reading it alongside these other stories by a true icon of world and Russian literature, one cannot help but feel a sense of hope, reminded--as Chekhov's readers almost invariably are--of the light one finds in even the darkest of places. "The Schoolmistress," which Chekhov wrote in Nice, is a brief story that follows Maria Vasilyevna as she returns to the village where she lives and works after collecting her pay in town. On the way, her cart nearly overturns, and she is forced to get out in the middle of a freezing river. To dry off, she takes a break at a local tavern, where she meets the formerly handsome Khanov, a landlord of her acquaintance. As she continues on her journey, she muses on her lot in life. Beset with memories and regrets, she struggles to make it home to a life she can hardly bear. "A Nervous Breakdown," originally published in 1889, is the story of a young law student who reluctantly agrees to accompany his friends on a night in Moscow's red-light district. Overwhelmed with despair and guilt, he struggles to reconcile what he sees with his own idealistic sense of the world. These are only two of the twenty-one works collected in The Schoolmistress and Other Stories, which showcase the immense talents of Anton Chekhov, an icon of Russian literature. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Anton Chekhov's The Schoolmistress and Other Stories is a classic of Russian literature reimagined for modern readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Undiscovered Chekhov gives us, in rich abundance, a new Chekhov. Peter Constantine's historic collection presents 38 new stories and with them a fresh interpretation of the Russian master. In contrast to the brooding representative of a dying century we have seen over and over, here is Chekhov's work from the 1880s, when Chekhov was in his twenties and his writing was sharp, witty and innovative. Many of the stories in The Undiscovered Chekhov reveal Chekhov as a keen modernist. Emphasizing impressions and the juxtaposition of incongruent elements, instead of the straight narrative his readers were used to, these stories upturned many of the assumptions of storytelling of the period. Here is "Sarah Bernhardt Comes to Town," written as a series of telegrams, beginning with "Have been drinking to Sarah's health all week! Enchanting! She actually dies standing up!..." In "Confession...," a thirty-nine year old bachelor recounts some of the fifteen times chance foiled his marriage plans. In "How I Came to be Lawfully Wed," a couple reminisces about the day they vowed to resist their parents' plans that they should marry. And in the more familiarly Chekhovian "Autumn," an alcoholic landowner fallen low and a peasant from his village meet far from home in a sad and haunting reunion in which the action of the story is far less important than the powerful impression it leaves with the reader that each man must live his life and has his reasons.

Book Letters of Anton Chekhov

Download or read book Letters of Anton Chekhov written by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov and published by New York : Viking Press. This book was released on 1973 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Anton Chekhov's plays and stories have become familiar classics in translation, but his remarkable correspondence has been more or less unknown to American readers. Yet the letters show Chekhov intimately as man and artist, and offer a revealing glimpse of Russian life in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. From the various Russian editions of the voluminous Chekhov correspondence, Avrahm Yarmolinsky has chosen more than five hundred letters for this book, annotating them where necessary to identify people, places, and events. What emerges from this comprehensive selection is a compelling self-portrait of a man of irrepressible humor, a man who abhorred deceit and coercion; loved individuality and freedom; trusted in science; looked quizzically at government; had no faith in the intelligentsia, the proletariat, or for that matter the peasantry from which he stemmed, yet had a strong sense of civic responsibility and was deeply humane. As writer, doctor, and playwright, as kinsman and husband, he was a man of genius and generosity. He was also, as Mr. Yarmolinsky writes, 'an incorruptible witness' to his time. Chekhov is a complex figure, and the letters disclose a person more than usually self-contradictory, elusive, and lonely. For much of his life he was dangerously ill, and his last years were spent as a consumptive in exile in the Crimea. From his home there--or from hotels in Nice, Moscow, and finally the Black Forest--letters poured out to members of his family, other writers and doctors, editors, actors, and his wife--an actress with the Moscow Art Theater who played leading roles in most of his plays. These letters are as engaging as the earlier ones written while traveling across Siberia to study the penal colony on Sakhalin, or to his first publishers and friends in the theater. Read chronologically, from the earliest teenage missives of the 1870s to his last letters of 1904, they tell a story of his delight in life, of passion, of wrenching pathos."--Dust jacket.
