Download or read book Anthology of Apologists and Detractors of the Basque Language written by Juan Madariaga Orbea and published by Center for Basque Studies Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thorough introduction is followed by texts from numerous authors presenting arguments on the excellence or inferiority of the Basque language. "From the seventeenth through the nineteenth centuries... a number of Spanish and French authors made it their business to point out the barbarity and lack of literary development of the Basque language... On the other hand, the Basque apologists sought to legitimize the [language and foral system] through the creation of a construct, more or less mythical in essence, which with great frequency relied on the excellence of the Basque language for its justification... This anthology attempts to present the most important works of this secular polemic."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The HB Anthology of Drama has set the pace in comprehensive coverage of world theatre from Greek to the present. This anthology continues that trend with a strong representation by women writers and by writers of color. Each unit of the third edition begins with an extensive introduction, placing drama in the context of a specific historical era. Each play is accompanied by a brief biography of the playwright and a short introduction to the play and concludes with a selection of critical readings drawn from the period, essays on performance, and a contemporary theater review of one play in that unit. The text can be adapted for a range of courses, such as Theatre History, Modern Drama and various surveys of drama, i.e., by genre (tragedy, comedy), by national origin (American) or as a survey or dramatic literature.

Download or read book The Neo Latin Epigram written by Susanna de Beer and published by Universitaire Pers Leuven. This book was released on 2009 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The epigram is certainly one of the most intriguing, while at the same time most elusive, genres of Neo-Latin literature. From the end of the fifteenth century, almost every humanist writer who regarded himself a true "poeta" had composed a respectable number of epigrams. Given our sense of poetical aesthetics, be it idealistic, postidealistic, modern, or postmodern, the epigrammatic genre is difficult to understand. Because of its close ties with the historical and social context, it does not fit any of these aesthetic approaches. By presenting various epigram writers, collections, and subgenres from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century, this volume offers a first step toward a better understanding of some of the features of humanist epigram literature.

Download or read book The Cambridge Anthology of British Medieval Latin Volume 2 1066 1500 written by Carolinne White and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2024-01-31 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology presents in two volumes a series of Latin texts (with English translation) produced in Britain during the period AD 450-1500. Excerpts are taken from Bede and other historians, from the letters of women written from their monasteries, from famous documents such as Domesday Book and Magna Carta, and from accounts and legal documents, all revealing the lives of individuals at home and on their travels across Britain and beyond. It offers an insight into Latin writings on many subjects, showing the important role of Latin in the multilingual society of medieval Britain, in which Latin was the primary language of written communication and record and also developed, particularly after the Norman Conquest, through mutual influence with English and French. The thorough introductions to each volume provide a broad overview of the linguistic and cultural background, while the individual texts are placed in their social, historical and linguistic context.
