Book Every Object Tells a Story

Download or read book Every Object Tells a Story written by Oliver Hoare and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extraordinary and breathtakingly beautiful book celebrates a lifetime of collecting passion. Oliver Hoare, one of London's most distinguished dealers, originally learnt his craft in the company of Bruce Chatwin. His love of the rare, the evocative, the seductive shines out from every stunning object in this collection and the stories that he teases out from them. No one could fail to be drawn into this gorgeous labyrinth. Published to coincide with an exhibition held in the magnificent settings of the Lavery Room in Sir John Millais's studio house in South Kensington, the book includes antiquities from the ancient and classical worlds; objects connected to shamanism, magic and alchemy; engravings by D rer, Hollar and Rembrandt; unusual paintings and textiles; and many curiosities Highlights include: the silver libation cup of M ngke Khan, grandson of Genghis and ruler of an empire that stretched from modern Bucharest to Peking, and Karachi to Novgorod; the apple from the Garden of Eden - a silver pomander belonging to the Stuart Kings, with bite marks, opening to reveal a silver skull; a Scythian (6-7th centuries BC) jade pendant of the endangered Saiga antelope, as finely carved as anything by Faberg ; a bronze Bacchus head from a tripod table belonging to the Emperor Augustus; a limestone bear carved in 3rd millenium BC Bactria. "The point of the exhibition, as its title announces, is to celebrate the fascinating, and often peculiar stories attached to works of art. The criterion for what is presented has little to do with the value of objects and therefore it differs from the more conventional 'Cabinet of Curiosities'. Nor does it reflect the current canon of what is seen as beautiful or culturally significant, although there are significant and beautiful works of art by anyone's standards. The catalogue is, hopefully, the work of a storyteller's art." Oliver Hoare

Book The Emergence of the Antique and Curiosity Dealer in Britain 1815 1850

Download or read book The Emergence of the Antique and Curiosity Dealer in Britain 1815 1850 written by Mark Westgarth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than the customary focus on the activities of individual collectors, The Emergence of the Antique and Curiosity Dealer in Britain 1815–1850: The Commodification of Historical Objects illuminates the less-studied roles played by dealers in the nineteenthcentury antique and curiosity markets. Set against the recent ‘art market turn’ in scholarly literature, this volume examines the role, activities, agency and influence of antique and curiosity dealers as they emerged in the opening decades of the nineteenth century. This study begins at the end of the Napoleonic Wars, when dealers began their wholesale importations of historical objects; it closes during the 1850s, after which the trade became increasingly specialised, reflecting the rise of historical museums such as the South Kensington Museum (V&A). Focusing on the archive of the early nineteenth-century London dealer John Coleman Isaac (c.1803–1887), as well as drawing on a wide range of other archival and contextual material, Mark Westgarth considers the emergence of the dealer in relation to a broad historical and cultural landscape. The emergence of the antique and curiosity dealer was part of the rapid economic, social, political and cultural change of early nineteenth-century Britain, centred around ideas of antiquarianism, the commercialisation of culture and a distinctive and evolving interest in historical objects. This book will be of interest to scholars in art history, histories of collecting, museum and heritage studies and nineteenth-century culture.

Book excerpt: This catalogue was compiled to compliment one of Patrimonju's most prestigious exhibitions, Silver of Malta. The nine hundred and ninety-five entries consist of silver items created by Maltese and foreign silversmiths that settled in Malta, ranging from mid 16th Century till the 19th Century. These objets d'art commissioned by the Maltese, the Knights and also by the British residents, became highly collectable items of exceptional craftsmanship of an international standard. The wide variety of exhibits included silver for banqueting and tea tables, the famous oil lamps (lampieri), glove trays (guantieri), salvers (sootocoppe), scent flasks (Balsamini), snuff-boxes, jewelry and several others. Religious silver was also exhibited but restricted to items used in the house or house chapel. The catalogue is forwarded by a synoptic essay on the Influence of European Silver on the Maltese Art of Silversmithing, and includes an exhaustive Glossary and an illustrated section to the Makers' Marks of all the recorded silversmiths producing silver in Malta. Alaine Apap Bologna is an art historian and connoisseur, who specialised in silver and objets d'art at Christie's Geneva becoming the head of the silver and watch departments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kyffin Williams RA (b.1918) is the central figure in contemporary Welsh painting and this book, the first monograph to be published on the artist, examines the full range of his work from the mid-1940s to the present day. From the outset of his career, Kyffin Williams took both the landscape and the people of North Wales as his subjects, and he has remained faithful to them for almost sixty years. He has realised, through his oil paintings, his watercolours and his drawings, the spirit of a mountainous landscape and its inhabitants that now form the cornerstone upon which we understand and visualise the essence of North Wales.Including an authoritative introductory essay by Ian Jeffrey, one of Britain's leading art historians, the book also profiles ten sites in North Wales where the artist has worked throughout his career. The inclusion of a range of location photographs by Nicholas Sinclair helps to explain both Williams' inspiration and how he interprets the world around him.Kyffin Williams encapsulates all aspects of Wales' most famous living artist and is consequently an invaluable resource for both scholars and art collectors.

Book excerpt: A dazzling look back at six decades of paintings by America's favorite artist, this is the crowning book of Andrew Wyeth's career. This comprehensive survey reproduces 133 tempera, drybrush, and watercolor paintings and five pencil sketches - the only true retrospective of the artist's work ever published. But what makes this book truly extraordinary are Wyeth's comments about each painting - an "autobiography," told through conversations with Thomas Hoving - which offer fascinating, sometimes unexpected facts about Wyeth's life and art. Based on a retrospective exhibition that originated in Japan and travels to The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Andrew Wyeth: Autobiography includes many seminal paintings from both his Chadds Ford and Maine work - including Distant Thunder, Garret Room, and several paintings of Helga - as well as recent work from the 1990s and some rarely seen images. As Thomas Hoving writes in his introduction, "Wyeth, in essence, has always painted for himself." This beautifully printed, elegantly designed book reveals that self as no other collection has done before.
