Book Ennion Master of Roman Glass

Download or read book Ennion Master of Roman Glass written by Christopher S. Lightfoot and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2014-12-08 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among glass craftsman active in the 1st century A.D., the most famous and gifted was Ennion, who hailed from the coastal city of Sidon in modern Lebanon. Ennion’s glass stood out for its quality and popularity. His products are distinguished by the fine detail and precision of their relief decoration, which imitates designs found on contemporaneous silverware. This compact, but thorough volume examines the most innovative and elegant known examples of Roman mold-blown glass, providing a uniquely comprehensive, up-to-date study of these exceptional works. Included are some twenty-six remarkably preserved examples of drinking cups, bowls, and jugs signed by Ennion himself, as well as fifteen additional vessels that were clearly influenced by him. The informative texts and illustrations effectively convey the lasting aesthetic appeal of Ennion’s vessels, and offer an accessible introduction to an ancient art form that reached its apogee in the early decades of the Roman Empire.

Book An Auctioneer s Lot

Download or read book An Auctioneer s Lot written by Philip Serrell and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2011-09-29 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From priceless eighteenth-century dining tables hidden away in decaying farm sheds to tattooed travellers with a penchant for Wedgewood china, professional auctioneer Philip Serrell has seen it all. In An Auctioneer's Lot he brings to life a world in which the most valuable antiques frequently turn up in the most unlikely places - and accompanied by the most unlikely people. For over twenty years he has uncovered a huge range of priceless (and occasionally worthless) antiques, and he has met, done business with and befriended people from some odd corners of English life. Funny, startling and sometimes poignant, these stories of ordinary people with extraordinary possessions are also the perfect inspiration for anyone who's ever wondered whether they might just be sitting on a fortune . . .

Book Contemporary Art in Asia

Download or read book Contemporary Art in Asia written by Melissa Chiu and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This foundational anthology maps the emergence of a dynamic new global phenomenon: contemporary Asian art. In 2008, Asia stormed the citadel of the New York art world when two major museums presented retrospectives of Asian contemporary artists: Cai Guo-Qiang at the Guggenheim Museum and Takashi Murakami at the Brooklyn Museum. Meanwhile, in Hong Kong, a painting by Zeng Fanzhi sold for $9.5 million, setting a new world auction record for Chinese contemporary art. The Western art world is still coming to grips with the challenge: it is all about Asia now. This book is the first anthology of critical writings to map the shift in both the nature and the reception of Asian art over the past twenty years. Offering texts by leading figures in the field (mostly Asian), and including more than fifty illustrations in color and black and white, it covers developments in East Asia (including China, Korea, and Japan), South Asia (including India and Pakistan), and Southeast Asia (including Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand). Together, the twenty-three texts posit an historical and pan-Asian response to the question, "What is Asian contemporary art?" Considering such topics as Asian modernism ("productive mistranslation" of the European original), Asian cubism, and the curating, collecting, and criticism of Asian contemporary art, this book promises to be a foundational reference for many years to come.

Book Fonthill Recovered

    Book Details:
  • Author : Caroline Dakers
  • Publisher : UCL Press
  • Release : 2018-05-16
  • ISBN : 1787350452
  • Pages : 430 pages

Download or read book Fonthill Recovered written by Caroline Dakers and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2018-05-16 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fonthill, in Wiltshire, is traditionally associated with the writer and collector William Beckford who built his Gothic fantasy house called Fonthill Abbey at the end of the eighteenth century. The collapse of the Abbey’s tower in 1825 transformed the name Fonthill into a symbol for overarching ambition and folly, a sublime ruin. Fonthill is, however, much more than the story of one man’s excesses. Beckford’s Abbey is only one of several important houses to be built on the estate since the early sixteenth century, all of them eventually consumed by fire or deliberately demolished, and all of them oddly forgotten by historians. Little now remains: a tower, a stable block, a kitchen range, some dressed stone, an indentation in a field. Fonthill Recovered draws on histories of art and architecture, politics and economics to explore the rich cultural history of this famous Wiltshire estate. The first half of the book traces the occupation of Fonthill from the Bronze Age to the twenty-first century. Some of the owners surpassed Beckford in terms of their wealth, their collections, their political power and even, in one case, their sexual misdemeanours. They include Charles I’s Chancellor of the Exchequer, and the richest commoner in the nineteenth century. The second half of the book consists of essays on specific topics, filling out such crucial areas as the complex history of the designed landscape, the sources of the Beckfords’ wealth and their collections, and one essay that features the most recent appearance of the Abbey in a video game.

Book What Am I Bid

Download or read book What Am I Bid written by Philip Serrell and published by . This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Philip Serrell gave up teaching to become a professional auctioneer, he thought he was embarking on a sensible and safe career... a quiet life in the country with no surprises. How wrong he was. In What Am I Bid? he tells of life after the events he described in his previous memoirs, An Auctioneer's Lot and Sold to the Man with the Tin Leg, to bring his story up to date. From dodgy cars to fakes in the saleroom; angry livestock, mangled silverware and tortuous - not to mention muddy - experiences in local markets and farm sales, Philip has been there, done that and got the hoofprints on his suit to prove it.

Book Artist s Resale Right droit de Suite

Download or read book Artist s Resale Right droit de Suite written by Simon Stokes and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new and revised third edition takes stock of over 10 years' experience of Artist's Resale Right (ARR), also called droit de suite, in the UK. As well as offering updated guidance, it also includes a commentary on recent European and international developments and the impact of Brexit on ARR in the UK. ARR gives artists and their heirs a royalty on re-sales of their art works. This intellectual property right, which forms part of Copyright Law, is originally of French origin and was first introduced into UK law in 2006 to implement the 2001 EU Directive on ARR. ARR remains a right with a strong European focus-it is not currently implemented in a number of significant art markets outside the EU. Nevertheless the establishment in 2006 of an ARR regime in the UK (the second largest global art market), along with EU harmonization of the right, have been influential in encouraging states such as the USA, China, and Switzerland to consider its adoption. This book, first published in 2006, continues to be the only UK text dedicated to examining the background to the Directive, UK ARR and its implementation in the UK. The practical guidance offered is essential to all those with an interest in the operation of the right in the UK-artists, collecting societies/CMOs, art dealers, auction houses, art galleries, collectors, and their legal advisers. The work includes a copy of the ARR Directive and the consolidated UK Artist's Resale Right Regulations. [Subject: Copyright Law, Artist's Resale Rights, European Law, British Law]
