But this can happen for generalizations of vector spaces—objects of a tensor category. The theory of tensor categories is a relatively new field of mathematics that generalizes the theory of group representations. It has deep connections with many other fields, including representation theory, Hopf algebras, operator algebras, low-dimensional topology (in particular, knot theory), homotopy theory, quantum mechanics and field theory, quantum computation, theory of motives, etc. This book gives a systematic introduction to this theory and a review of its applications. While giving a detailed overview of general tensor categories, it focuses especially on the theory of finite tensor categories and fusion categories (in particular, braided and modular ones), and discusses the main results about them with proofs. In particular, it shows how the main properties of finite-dimensional Hopf algebras may be derived from the theory of tensor categories. Many important results are presented as a sequence of exercises, which makes the book valuable for students and suitable for graduate courses. Many applications, connections to other areas, additional results, and references are discussed at the end of each chapter.

The author applies the theory of liftings to Eilenberg–Moore categories to translate the axioms of each considered variant of a bialgebra (or Hopf algebra) to a bimonad (or Hopf monad) structure on a suitable functor. The theory of noncommutative motives is more recent. It began in the 1980s when the Moscow school (Beilinson, Bondal, Kapranov, Manin, and others) began the study of algebraic varieties via their derived categories of coherent sheaves, and continued in the 2000s when Kontsevich conjectured the existence of a "universal invariant of noncommutative algebraic varieties". This book, prefaced by Yuri I. Manin, gives a rigorous overview of some of the main advances in the theory of noncommutative motives. It is divided into three main parts. The first part, which is of independent interest, is devoted to the study of DG categories from a homotopical viewpoint. The second part, written with an emphasis on examples and applications, covers the theory of noncommutative pure motives, noncommutative standard conjectures, noncommutative motivic Galois groups, and also the relations between these notions and their commutative counterparts. The last part is devoted to the theory of noncommutative mixed motives. The rigorous formalization of this latter theory requires the language of Grothendieck derivators, which, for the reader's convenience, is revised in a brief appendix.

Book excerpt: The primary aim of this monograph is to achieve part of Beilinson’s program on mixed motives using Voevodsky’s theories of A1-homotopy and motivic complexes. Historically, this book is the first to give a complete construction of a triangulated category of mixed motives with rational coefficients satisfying the full Grothendieck six functors formalism as well as fulfilling Beilinson’s program, in particular the interpretation of rational higher Chow groups as extension groups. Apart from Voevodsky’s entire work and Grothendieck’s SGA4, our main sources are Gabber’s work on étale cohomology and Ayoub’s solution to Voevodsky’s cross functors theory. We also thoroughly develop the theory of motivic complexes with integral coefficients over general bases, along the lines of Suslin and Voevodsky. Besides this achievement, this volume provides a complete toolkit for the study of systems of coefficients satisfying Grothendieck’ six functors formalism, including Grothendieck-Verdier duality. It gives a systematic account of cohomological descent theory with an emphasis on h-descent. It formalizes morphisms of coefficient systems with a view towards realization functors and comparison results. The latter allows to understand the polymorphic nature of rational mixed motives. They can be characterized by one of the following properties: existence of transfers, universality of rational algebraic K-theory, h-descent, étale descent, orientation theory. This monograph is a longstanding research work of the two authors. The first three parts are written in a self-contained manner and could be accessible to graduate students with a background in algebraic geometry and homotopy theory. It is designed to be a reference work and could also be useful outside motivic homotopy theory. The last part, containing the most innovative results, assumes some knowledge of motivic homotopy theory, although precise statements and references are given.

In the first chapter knotted surface diagrams are defined and exemplified; these are generic surfaces in 3-space with crossing information given. The diagrams are further enhanced to give alternative descriptions. A knotted surface can be described as a movie, as a kind of labeled planar graph, or as a sequence of words in which successive words are related by grammatical changes. In the second chapter, the theory of Reidemeister moves is developed in the various contexts. The authors show how to unknot intricate examples using these moves. The third chapter reviews the braid theory of knotted surfaces. Examples of the Alexander isotopy are given, and the braid movie moves are presented. In the fourth chapter, properties of the projections of knotted surfaces are studied. Oriented surfaces in 4-space are shown to have planar projections without cusps and without branch points. Signs of triple points are studied. Applications of triple-point smoothing that include proofs of triple-point formulas and a proof of Whitney's congruence on normal Euler classes are presented. The fifth chapter indicates how to obtain presentations for the fundamental group and the Alexander modules. Key examples are worked in detail. The Seifert algorithm for knotted surfaces is presented and exemplified. The sixth chapter relates knotted surfaces and diagrammatic techniques to 2-categories. Solutions to the Zamolodchikov equations that are diagrammatically obtained are presented. The book contains over 200 illustrations that illuminate the text. Examples are worked out in detail, and readers have the opportunity to learn first-hand a series of remarkable geometric techniques.
