Book Mounce s Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words

Download or read book Mounce s Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words written by William D. Mounce and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2009-12-15 with total page 1544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For years, Vine’s Expository Dictionary has been the standard word study tool for pastors and laypeople, selling millions of copies. But sixty-plus years of scholarship have shed extensive new light on the use of biblical Greek and Hebrew, creating the need for a new, more accurate, more thorough dictionary of Bible words. William Mounce, whose Greek grammar has been used by more than 100,000 college and seminary students, is the editor of this new dictionary, which will become the layperson’s gold standard for biblical word studies. Mounce’s is ideal for the reader with limited or no knowledge of Greek or Hebrew who wants greater insight into the meanings of biblical words to enhance Bible study. It is also the perfect reference for busy pastors needing to quickly get at the heart of a word’s meaning without wading through more technical studies. What makes Mounce’s superior to Vine’s? The most accurate, in-depth definitions based on the best of modern evangelical scholarship Both Greek and Hebrew words are found under each English entry (Vine’s separates them) Employs both Strong’s and G/K numbering systems (Vine’s only uses Strong’s) Mounce’s accuracy is endorsed by leading scholars

Book Retreating the Political

Download or read book Retreating the Political written by Phillippe Lacoue-Labarthe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-19 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays presents, for the first time in English, some of the key essays on the political by Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe and Jean-Luc Nancy. Including several unpublished essays, Retreating the Political offers some highly original perspectives on the relationship between philosophy and the political. Through contemporary readings of the political in Freud, Heidegger and Marx, the authors ask if we can talk of an a priori link between the philosophical and the political; they investigate the significance of the 'figure' - the human being as political subject - in the history of metaphysics; and they inquire how we can 're-treat' the political today in the face of those who argue that philosophy is at an 'end'.

Book excerpt: The lectures contained in this volume were given for the University of Edinburgh on Lord Gifford's foundation in the years 1933 and 1934. I have delayed their publication in the hope that with process of time I might, by further reading and thought, be able to expand and modify them, so as to make them more worthy of presentation to the public in the form of a book. This hope has been so meagrely realized that it now seems best to let them go forth, with all their imperfections on their head, hardly at all altered from the form in which they were delivered. Some changes in arrangement have been made in the order of lectures: the two on Time now follow immediately the two on the spatial symbol of Height. Four lectures have been omitted altogether from the present volume, those on image-worship and doctrines condemning the manufacture of images in antiquity and in the Christian Church. Since in the rest of the lectures the symbolism of material objects in worship was not the kind of symbolism under consideration, these four lectures seemed somewhat of a digression from the main line of argument. I hope later on to issue them as a small book by themselves.

Book Anthropology in Public Health

Download or read book Anthropology in Public Health written by Robert A. Hahn and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1999 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural and social boundaries often separate those who participate in public health activities, and it is a major challenge to translate public health knowledge and technical capacity into public health action across these boundaries. This book provides an overview of anthropology and illustrates in 15 case studies how anthropological concepts and methods can help us understand and resolve diverse public health problems around the world. For example, one chapter shows how differences in concepts and terminology among patients, clinicians, and epidemiologists in a southwestern U.S. county hinder the control of epidemics. Another chapter examines reasons that Mexican farmers don't use protective equipment when spraying pesticides and suggests ways to increase use. Another examines the culture of international health agencies, demonstrates institutional values and practices that impede effective public health practice, and suggests issues that must be addressed to enhance institutional organization and process.; Each chapter characterizes a public health problem, describes methods used to analyse it, reviews results, and discusses implications; several chapters also describe and evaluate programs designed to address the problem on the basis of anthropological knowledge. The book provides practical models and indicates anthropological tools to translate public health knowledge and technical capacity into public health action.

Book Leading Works in Law and Anthropology

Download or read book Leading Works in Law and Anthropology written by Alice Margaria and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-16 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The academic disciplines of law and sociocultural anthropology have a long but at times contentious history of drawing on each other in order to study and understand law and human experience in its diverse manifestations. This volume provides an innovative and engaging format by giving established and emerging scholars from diverse jurisdictions the opportunity to discuss and reflect upon what they consider to be a ‘leading work’. The collection offers a unique, multi-perspectival reconsideration of the intellectual history of the field whilst also addressing issues that are at the core of interdisciplinary legal research. Contributions shed light on the changing nature of cross-disciplinary research and collaboration, trace how disciplinary understandings of normativity have cross-fertilised each other, and reflect on choices taken within research on law and anthropology along a continuum of theoretical reflection, critique, engagement, and practical application. The book elaborates on the nature and the boundaries of law and anthropology research, as well as on its likely future development in light of the insights shared by contributors on their chosen leading works. The book will make fascinating reading for researchers and academics in both law and anthropology. Book Constructing Frames of Reference

Download or read book Constructing Frames of Reference written by Lewis R. Binford and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many consider Lewis Binford to be the single most influential figure in archaeology in the last half-century. His contributions to the "New Archaeology" changed the course of the field, as he argued for the development of a scientifically rigorous framework to guide the excavation and interpretation of the archaeological record. This book, the culmination of Binford's intellectual legacy thus far, presents a detailed description of his methodology and its significance for understanding hunter-gatherer cultures on a global basis. This landmark publication will be an important step in understanding the great process of cultural evolution and will change the way archaeology proceeds as a scientific enterprise. This work provides a major synthesis of an enormous body of cultural and environmental information and offers many original insights into the past. Binford helped pioneer what is now called "ethnoarchaeology"—the study of living societies to help explain cultural patterns in the archaeological record—and this book is grounded on a detailed analysis of ethnographic data from about 340 historically known hunter-gatherer populations. The methodological framework based on this data will reshape the paradigms through which we understand human culture for years to come.

Book In Search of Coherence

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marcel Jousse
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2016-11-10
  • ISBN : 149829796X
  • Pages : 323 pages

Download or read book In Search of Coherence written by Marcel Jousse and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marcel Jousse's anthropology of mimism is a plea for a change of civilization. Our present-day Western civilization has decomposed the human being into a mind-soul-spirit and a body, put writing as the apex of this human's expression, and set this human as the conqueror of his world. Jousse pleads for a threefold re-composition: a human compound, expressing himself as a whole, and in exchange with a cosmos that he mimes and infuses with consciousness. What is needed is an evolution, neither progressive nor regressive, but an evolution in depth, reconnecting the new with the old--in short, coherence.
