Book excerpt: All my life I desired to experience what my dad felt for my mom. What I loved about him was the way he looked at her, love and adoration shining through his eyes. She meant everything to him, so when she died, it was clear: he stayed alive just for me. In a wolf pack like ours, a death of this kind often leads to vanishing into thin air and going back home to the Moon Goddess. However, being a strong beta as he was, my father refused to accept this ending choosing instead—his example taught admiration even among those who had both parents. For as long as I can remember I have always felt that my father’s love was always there; I never questioned it. My mother had told me many times that we shared a lot in common and I believed her. Consequently, along with finding my mate who is usually found at 16 years old but mine occurred when I made contact with my wolf aged 13 years old. Nevertheless, being older than me and he promised that he will wait until am mature enough to complete our bond together. He was someone whom I could trust completely. However at the age of fifteen all things changed. The alpha sounding from lips which belonged to Percy’s father announced that Denva Woods from Blue Woods Pack would get married next month on his birthday which is three months away from now to Ralph Smit who used to be our babysitter during childhood years. This news left me shattered inside out . The looks of pity and Ralph’s apologetic note only served to deepen the pain further in me. For instance Percy said that it favored pack welfare yet how did it make sense while my heart was tearing apart?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An eight year old boy named James, aka the wannabe Cisco Kid, nearly lost his life as he searched for precious metal in a bone dry southwest Arizona gulley. He retrieved only pyrite before a desert flood swept away his world. Over the course of half a century James acquired several additional nicknames. They were reflections of his multiple personalities. His dad called him Traveler or Trav. Some coworkers referred to him as Point Man. A few colleagues labeled him Knowledge Navigator or Nav. Under the cool, shimmering waters of Dutch Buffalo Creek, in 2014 A.D., Trav came upon a rusty bayonet. It was buried long ago in the Carolina Piedmont. This discovery is no coincidence; indeed, this bayonet is a symbol of the abundant riches found in the river of history that connects both the past and future. The blade reminded Point Man that all that glitters is not gold. Nav expanded the search for real treasure beyond the water’s edge. The blade was a catalyst that drove James to sift through a lifetime of artifacts and bittersweet memories. He found riches from the past and caught a glimpse of the future. Just as the bayonet glimmered in the depths of the water, so does the ongoing work of his family’s unseen witnesses, the Neverborn. They reveal ancient treasures that go far beyond mere gold and silver. James is guided into a deeper understanding that he and countless loved ones have been called by name as spoken by the prophet Isaiah: I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.

Gates has approached philanthropy the same way he revolutionized computer software: with a fierce ambition to change the rules of the game. That's why at last year's annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Gates advocated a 'creative capitalism', in which big corporations should integrate doing good into their way of doing business. This controversial new idea is discussed and debated by the more than 40 contributors to this book, among them three Nobel laureates and two former U.S. cabinet secretaries. Edited by author and columnist Michael Kinsley, Creative Capitalismbrings together some of the world's best minds to engage Gates's challenge. Download or read book The Black Ballad written by Storytellers Forge and published by Storytellers Forge. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where do the dead go when they rest? The poetic mystery of death has long been a fascination for the living. The images of warm hearths and a familial embrace are conjured for some, while others picture screaming in eternal torment at the hands of a demon. And yet, clerics have the power to pluck the dead back from that plane, thrusting them back into their mortal coils or even raising them into a state of eternal Undeath. Surely the gods would grow weary of their clerics pinching souls that rightfully belonged in their afterlife. Wouldn’t they? A partnership forged in fire and blood between musicians, artists, writers, editors, and more currently rests in your hands. The Black Ballad is a 10-chapter roleplaying campaign made alongside DiAmorte’s second album, a savage metal opera of cosmic proportions. This saga will let players decide the fate of the afterlife itself while immersing themselves in musical works focusing on loss, acceptance, and determination in the face of one’s own death. Will your campaign have the gall to challenge the will of divinity?
Download or read book Political Economy and Policy Analysis written by Antonio Merlo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-11-14 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of economics takes politics for granted. Through some (often implausible) assumptions, it seeks to explain away political structures by characterizing them as stable and predictable or as inconsequential in understanding what goes on in an economy. Such attempts are misguided, and this book shows how governments and political institutions are composed of people who respond to incentives and whose behavior and choices can be studied through the lens of economics. This book aims to bridge the gap between economics and politics, and in doing so hopes to instill in the reader a deeper appreciation for social scientific thinking. Opening with a refresher on microeconomics and an introduction to the toolkit of political economy, it ensures that the necessary building blocks are in place before building up from the level of the individual and the firm to show how a political–economic equilibrium can be achieved. The text explores how to separate primitives—the external parts of a model that we cannot affect—from outcomes—the internal parts of a model that we can. Moreover, it demonstrates that economic and political issues alike can be studied within the same general framework of analysis. Political Economy and Policy Analysis offers readers the chance to gain a more sophisticated understanding of political processes, economic processes, and the interplay among them. Adopting an applied microeconomics approach, it will be ideal for upper-level undergraduate or postgraduate courses on political economy, public choice, or policy analysis. A complementary workbook with exercises and solutions that accompanies Political Economy and Policy Analysis is available for download under the eResources tab at: https://www.routledge.com/Political-Economy-and-Policy-Analysis/Merlo/p/book/9781138591783.

Book excerpt: The powerful story of slavery that has become a classic of American autobiography, in an authoritative edition “This edition is the most valuable teaching tool on slavery and abolition available today. It is exceptional.”—Nancy Hewitt, Distinguished Professor Emerita, Rutgers University The autobiography of Frederick Douglass (1818–1895), Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave, is widely regarded as a classic of American nineteenth-century history, of African-American studies, and of literature. In 1845, just seven years after his escape from slavery, the young Douglass published this powerful account of his life as a slave and his triumph over oppression. The book, which marked the beginning of Douglass’s career as an impassioned writer, journalist, and orator for the abolitionist cause, reveals the terrors he faced as a slave, the brutalities of his owners and overseers, and his harrowing escape to the North. This edition of the book, based on the authoritative text that appears in Yale University Press’s multivolume edition of the Frederick Douglass Papers, is the only edition of Douglass’s Narrative designated as an Approved Text by the Modern Language Association’s Committee on Scholarly Editions. It includes a chronology of Douglass’s life, a thorough introduction by the eminent Douglass scholar John Blassingame, historical notes, and reader responses to the first edition of 1845. “None so dramatically as Douglass integrated both the horror and the great quest of the African-American experience into the deep stream of American autobiography. He advanced and extended that tradition and is rightfully designated one of its greatest practitioners.”—John W. Blassingame, from the introduction
