Book excerpt: From the author of Losing Earth, a beautifully told exploration of our post-natural world that points the way to a new mode of ecological writing. We live at a time in which scientists race to reanimate extinct beasts, our most essential ecosystems require monumental engineering projects to survive, chicken breasts grow in test tubes, and multinational corporations conspire to poison the blood of every living creature. No rock, leaf, or cubic foot of air on Earth has escaped humanity's clumsy signature. The old distinctions—between natural and artificial, dystopia and utopia, science fiction and science fact—have blurred, losing all meaning. We inhabit an uncanny landscape of our own creation. In Second Nature, ordinary people make desperate efforts to preserve their humanity in a world that seems increasingly alien. Their stories—obsessive, intimate, and deeply reported—point the way to a new kind of environmental literature, in which dramatic narrative helps us to understand our place in a reality that resembles nothing human beings have known. From Odds Against Tomorrow to Losing Earth to the film Dark Waters (adapted from the first chapter of this book), Nathaniel Rich’s stories have come to define the way we think of contemporary ecological narrative. In Second Nature, he asks what it means to live in an era of terrible responsibility. The question is no longer, How do we return to the world that we’ve lost?It is, What world do we want to create in its place?

Book excerpt: Slavoj Žižek is the most popular and discussed philosopher in the world today. His prolific writings – across philosophy, psychoanalysis, political and social theory, film, music and religion – always engage and provoke. The power of his ideas, the breadth of his references, his capacity for playfulness and confrontation, his willingness to change his mind and his refusal fundamentally to alter his argument – all have worked to build an extraordinary international readership as well as to elicit much critical reaction. The Žižek Dictionary brings together leading Žižek commentators from across the world to present a companion and guide to Žižekian thought. Each of the 60 short essays examines a key term and, crucially, explores its development across Žižek’s work and how it fits in with other concepts and concerns. The dictionary will prove invaluable both to readers coming to Žižek for the first time and to those already embarked on the Žižekian journey.

Book Nicene and Post Nicene Fathers First Series Volume IV St Augustine The Writings Against the Manichaeans and Against the Donatists

Download or read book Nicene and Post Nicene Fathers First Series Volume IV St Augustine The Writings Against the Manichaeans and Against the Donatists written by Philip Schaff and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Council of Nicaea in 325 AD marked the beginning of a new era in Christianity. For the first time, doctrines were organized into a single creed. The Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers did most of their writing during and after this important event in Church history. Unlike the previous era of Christian writing, the Nicene and Post-Nicene era is dominated by a few very important and prolific writers. In Volume IV of the 14-volume collected writings of the Nicenes and Post-Nicenes (first published between 1886 and 1889), readers will find Augustines writings defending the Catholic church against the Manichaeans and the Donatists. Manichaeanism was a religion developed in Persia by the prophet Mani. According to this religion, creation has two parts: darkness and light. Light is God and has ten attributes. Opposing this, and coeternal with it, is darkness and its five attributes. Saint Augustine was originally a Manichaean, so his defense of Christianity against this religion comes from a deep understanding of its nature. Donatists were a group of believers who refused to forgive those who had renounced their faith during a time of persecution, which caused a schism in Christianity. In opposing these men, Augustine attempted to mend the rift. Those with an interest in ancient religions will find Augustines writings on Manichaeanism one of the most important historical records of that religions practices."

Book The Mystery of Human Relationship

Download or read book The Mystery of Human Relationship written by Nathan Schwartz-Salant and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All human relationships are containers of emotional life, but what are the structures underlying them? Nathan Schwartz-Salant looks at all kinds of relationships through an analyst's eye. By analogy with the ancient system of alchemy he shows how states of mind that can undermine our relationships - in marriage, in creative work, in the workplace - can become transformative when brought to consciousness. It is only by learning how to access the interactive field of our relationships that we can enter this transformative process and explore its mysterious potential for self-realization.

Download or read book The Collected Works of John Stuart Mill written by John Stuart Mill and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2024-01-17 with total page 2490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Stuart Mill's 'The Collected Works of John Stuart Mill' is a landmark collection of essays and philosophical writings that explore topics such as utilitarianism, political economy, and individual freedom. Mill's writing is characterized by its clarity, logical reasoning, and commitment to advancing social and political progress. Set against the backdrop of 19th-century England, Mill's works are considered essential reading for anyone interested in political philosophy and ethics. The collection includes influential works such as 'On Liberty' and 'Utilitarianism', which continue to shape modern debates on individual liberty and the role of government in society. John Stuart Mill, a prominent British philosopher and economist, was a leading figure in the utilitarian movement and a fierce advocate for individual rights and freedom of speech. His upbringing in a family of philosophers and his own experiences as a civil servant greatly influenced his writings, which sought to reconcile individual liberty with social progress. I highly recommend 'The Collected Works of John Stuart Mill' to readers interested in political philosophy, ethics, and the history of ideas. Mill's insightful and thought-provoking essays continue to resonate with contemporary issues and will undoubtedly enrich the intellectual curiosity of any reader.
