Book Indian Anophelines

Download or read book Indian Anophelines written by B. N. Nagpal and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian Anophelines is the first book of its kind on the fauna of anopheline mosquitoes from India. The following aspects of mosquito systematics, biology and distribution are described: Worldwide distribution of anophelines in 12 malaria epidemiological zones, Reported distribution of anophelines in India; Bio-ecology and behaviour of mosquitoes; Updated vector status; Pictorial keys; Bibliography; and Glossary. Indian Anophelines assume special importance because of the deteriorating malaria situation in India, complicated by vector resistance to insecticides, ecological succession of mosquitoes, invasion of mosquitoes to new areas, as also their disappearance from certain areas. As a result mosquito fauna has undergone major changes and this precise knowledge at the local level in endemic regions is invariably lacking. Often the identification is made difficult due to variations in many appendages. For each anopheline species the book provides names, derivatives, type form availability, resting habits, breeding ecology, biting time, flight range, susceptibility to insecticides, relation to disease, reported distribution in India and the world, and results of vector incrimination studies. Using this book it is easy to identify specimens correctly up to species level. Taxonomic description of each species is supported by high quality illustrations giving distinguishing features of each species and their variations. The style of presentation is lucid and simple. This book is intended as a reference material for students of mosquito systematics. The book therefore would be a valuable addition in the libraries and a source of knowledge for the students engaged in research and those interested in the study of the bioecology and control of mosquitoes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anopheles mosquitoes are highly important insects due to their involvement in the transmission of human malaria and its devastating consequences in endemic countries worldwide. In 2010 alone, malaria was responsible for an estimated 660,000 deaths. As the study of Anopheles species and populations is a key element for reaching the goal of malaria elimination, an enormous amount of information has accumulated over the past century, and together in recent decades with the advent of novel technologies the acquisition of new knowledge has accelerated even further. The originality of this book is to offer the latest compilation on various research, new concepts, paradigms and innovative approaches for the control of anophelines using state-of-the-art methodologies and analysis. The 24 chapters, written by internationally recognized experts from 5 continents, cover the rich landscape for the understanding of Anopheles mosquitoes and the development of more effective weapons to control the vector of malaria.

Book The Invincible Deadly Mosquitoes

Download or read book The Invincible Deadly Mosquitoes written by B.K. Tyagi and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Invincible Deadly Mosquitoes is a book with a difference, written in clear, simple and lucid language, and directed both at professional as well as amateur readership. The book is in fact a tribute to all those great entomologists and doctors, exemplified by a few chosen biographical sketches, who relentlessly worked arduously through all thick and thin to stem out the menace called mosquito. The dangers levied on humans by this tiny creature are too many, from irritating and painful bites to transmitting debilitating and deadly infections like malaria, filariasis, dengue, yellow fever and many types of encephalitides, many of which persistently occur in India. Mosquitoes, and the incapacitating diseases they transmit, have for long been considered to sap off individual's and the country's most vital resource, the blood, and, in the process, lend intellectual impoverishment on its people. The book, organized into fourteen chapters dealing with detailed morphology, taxonomy, feeding behaviour and control aspects, tells it all in the most straight forward manner, added with simple and comprehensible data projections. Mosquito, man's deadliest enemy on earth, in terms of both health and economy, is only getting mightier despite all our efforts to control it in past, and has now advanced to pose an inevitable threat to his successful survival. As biological entity, chronologically older and far too greatly seasoned, mosquito appears to be invincible if only targeted for a complete annihilation. Co-existence of both mosquito and man, without allowing the former to vex the latter, has to be designed by the more wiser one the homo sapiens. This book a unique experiment - thus offers a novel stimulus behind the mosquito saga and should hopefully serve country's medical entomologists a great deal in comprehending the real strengths and weaknesses of his bête noire, the mosquito.

Book Saving Lives Buying Time

    Book Details:
  • Author : Institute of Medicine
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2004-09-09
  • ISBN : 0309165938
  • Pages : 384 pages

Download or read book Saving Lives Buying Time written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-09-09 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 50 years, low-cost antimalarial drugs silently saved millions of lives and cured billions of debilitating infections. Today, however, these drugs no longer work against the deadliest form of malaria that exists throughout the world. Malaria deaths in sub-Saharan Africaâ€"currently just over one million per yearâ€"are rising because of increased resistance to the old, inexpensive drugs. Although effective new drugs called "artemisinins" are available, they are unaffordable for the majority of the affected population, even at a cost of one dollar per course. Saving Lives, Buying Time: Economics of Malaria Drugs in an Age of Resistance examines the history of malaria treatments, provides an overview of the current drug crisis, and offers recommendations on maximizing access to and effectiveness of antimalarial drugs. The book finds that most people in endemic countries will not have access to currently effective combination treatments, which should include an artemisinin, without financing from the global community. Without funding for effective treatment, malaria mortality could double over the next 10 to 20 years and transmission will intensify.

Book Anopheline Species Complexes in South and South East Asia

Download or read book Anopheline Species Complexes in South and South East Asia written by and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2007 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vector-borne diseases are a major health problem in South-East Asia and in other parts of the world. There are about 4,500 mosquito species in existence; species belonging to the Anopheles genus transmit malaria. Combating malaria is part of the Millennium Development Goals, and vector control is a key strategy both regionally and globally. Therefore, the review and dissemination of information on vector species is critically important. Most of the anophelines that are involved in the transmission of malaria in South and South-East Asia have been identified as species complexes. Members of a species complex are reproductively isolated evolutionary units with distinct gene pools and hence they differ in their biological characteristics. In 1998 WHO published Anopheline Species Complexes in South-East Asia. New identification tools have been developed since then, and therefore this updated edition was needed. It summarizes work that has been done on anopheline cryptic species and will be highly valuable to researchers, field entomologists and malaria-control program managers.

Book Genetic Control of Malaria and Dengue

Download or read book Genetic Control of Malaria and Dengue written by Zach N. Adelman and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetic Control of Malaria and Dengue focuses on the knowledge, technology, regulation and ethics of using genetically modified mosquitoes to interrupt the transmission of important vector-borne diseases including Malaria. It contains coverage of the current state of knowledge of vector-borne diseases and how they are currently controlled; vaccine, drug and insecticide development; various strategies for altering the genome of mosquitoes in beneficial ways; and the regulatory, ethical and social environment concerning these strategies. For more than five decades, the prospect of using genetically-modified mosquitoes to control vector-borne disease transmission has been a purely hypothetical scenario. We simply did not have the technology or basic knowledge to be able to do it. With the explosion of field trials and potential interventions in development, Genetic Control of Malaria and Dengue provides a comprehensive overview of research in genetics, microbiology, virology, and ecology involved in the development and implementation of genetic modification programs for virus and disease control. This book is meant to provide a practical guide to researchers, regulators and the general public about how this technology actually works, how it can be improved, and what is still unknown. - Includes coverage of vectorial capacity, critical to understanding vector-borne disease transmission - Provides a summary of the concepts of both population suppression and population replacement - Contains pivotal coverage of ethical and ecological ramifications of genetics-based control strategies
