We have had only appropriated for our roads for the past two years and it is utterly impossible, with this amount of money to do near what the public demands on our roads and, at the same time, they are justified in their demands for better roads, and it would be very pleasing to your committee on roads, bridges and drains to fix every piece of road that they touch each year in the best possible way if they had the funds to do it with, but they have to distribute the small amount they have to work with to the best advantage they can after looking over the 150 miles of roads. Con siderable time was spent in preparing for these suits. One of them was prepared for trial, and witnesses taken to court, but when ready to begin the case, the parties, find ing that we would not make any compromise, dropped the case (brown of Barrington vs. Town of Rochester). Three others have been compromised at a sum which would hard ly have been above the expense of defending the suits. One claim has been made during the past year for a fall upon the sidewalk, as claimed, resulting in a broken arm. This has been compromised in a satisfactory manner. There are now two suits brought against the town for damages said to have been caused on Portland street crossing, the horse being frightened by the cars.
