Download or read book Sustaining Natural Resources in a Changing Environment written by Linda Hantrais and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change and environmental degradation have intensified the pressures on crucial resources such as food and water security and air quality. In this collection, academic researchers and practitioners who have lived and worked in countries as geographically and culturally diverse as Brazil, China, India, Ghana, Palestine, Uganda and Venezuela draw on their wide-ranging international and inter-sectoral experience to offer valuable comparative insights into the relationship between research and evidence-based policy for sustaining natural resources. Their contributions provide a novel mix of disciplinary perspectives ranging across geography, ecology, social policy, the political economy, philosophy, international development, engineering technology, architecture and urban planning. They examine the institutions involved in generating and mediating evidence about the sustainability of natural resources in a changing environment, and the different methodologies employed in collecting and assessing evidence, informing policy and contributing to governance. The authors demonstrate not only that social science evidence on governance and policy implementation to sustain natural resources must complement natural science inputs, but also that local communities must be an integral part of any programme development. This book was originally published as a special issue of Contemporary Social Science.

Download or read book The Legal Framework Applicable to the Single Supervisory Mechanism written by Giovanni Bassani and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative book a leading expert directly involved in the development and implementation of the framework compellingly demonstrates the necessity of removing differences in banking legislation across national borders within the Banking Union. The author analyses all the cases where the European Central Bank (ECB) is required to apply national legislation in accordance with the country of establishment of the credit institutions under its direct supervision within the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM). Drawing on the case law of the European Court of Justice concerning the transposition of EU Directives the book also develops an analytical methodology to assess the derivation of national legislation from EU law with application to several concrete cases. In an in-depth analysis of the complex legal environment in which the ECB, as prudential supervisory authority, has been operating, the author thoroughly answers the following questions: – What are the supervisory tasks and powers of the ECB in the micro and macroprudential spheres? – When is the ECB required to apply national legislation? – What are the 'direct' and the 'indirect' supervisory powers of the ECB vis-à-vis significant supervised entities? – What are the options and discretions available in EU law? – What are the most important prudential options the ECB has exercised for significant supervised entities? – What are the main legal obstacles to the establishment of a truly single supervisory jurisdiction within the Euroarea with actual fungibility of capital and liquidity for cross-border banking groups? The legal analysis in this book supports, with great authority, the demands for a leap forward in the full harmonisation of key prudential requirements within the Banking Union. Legal and banking practitioners, officials in national and European authorities, banking law scholars and policymakers will benefit enormously from the lessons it contains for the way forward of the Banking Union and, more generally, the future of the European Union itself.

Download or read book The Human Rights Covenants at 50 written by Daniel Moeckli and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-06 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Half a century ago, on 16 December 1966, the UN General Assembly adopted the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). While the adoption of the two UN human rights covenants was celebrated all over the world, their 50th anniversary has received very little attention from the international community. The present book marks this anniversary by taking stock of the first half-century of the existence of what are probably the world's two most important human rights treaties. It does so by reflecting on what the covenants have achieved (or failed to achieve) in the years that have passed, by determining and comparing their current influence in the various regions of the world, and by assessing their potential roles in the future. The book contains papers that were presented during a symposium held in Zurich in 2016, which brought together experts and stakeholders from a range of disciplines and world regions. Some fundamental issues that are addressed by the contributors are as old as the two covenants themselves. They concern, for example, the division of human rights into first- and second-generation rights, and the question of whether there should be one central monitoring body - possibly a world court - or more than just one. However, the contributors go beyond such questions that have been explored before; they develop new answers to old questions and point to new challenges.

Download or read book Anti Money Laundering Compliance and the Legal Profession written by Sarah Kebbell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Money laundering is a global issue and there is evidence that the services provided by the legal profession may be misused to launder the proceeds of crime. This book explores the experiences of professionals within Top 50 law firms when seeking to comply with the UK’s anti-money laundering (AML) regime. The book draws upon empirical evidence from 40 in-depth interviews with solicitors and compliance personnel from 20 Top 50 law firms. Access to this section of the legal profession is challenging in the context of academic research, and the research provides an account, seldom heard in academic literature, directly from practitioners. The book uses these research findings to explore and discuss the AML compliance issues faced by this section of the profession. It highlights the challenges presented by the legislative architecture of the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, and considers compliance issues relating to customer due diligence, AML training, the client account and the suspicious activity reporting regime. It also considers participants’ perceptions of the regime, their role within it, and their own assessment of money laundering risk. It concludes by using this evidence to recommend amendments to current AML policy and legislation. This book will be of interest to students and researchers studying Financial Crime Law, Business and Company Law, and White Collar Crime, as well as policy makers in the areas of money laundering, compliance, and corruption.
