Book Sheep Veterinary Practice

Download or read book Sheep Veterinary Practice written by Kym A. Abbott and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-07-16 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sheep Veterinary Practice is the ideal reference for veterinarians in farm animal practice, veterinary and animal science students, agriculturalists and sheep producers. While addressing sheep health, welfare and production matters in Australia, this book covers issues of relevance in any country where sheep are raised. Sheep veterinary specialist Professor Kym Abbott and his co-authors inform the reader of the science underpinning the occurrence of disease syndromes, giving special attention to commonly investigated problems related to nutrition, reproduction and helminthiasis. Other disease conditions of sheep are discussed in subsequent chapters; first on the basis of presenting signs in the case of lameness and sudden death – conditions in which signs can be attributed to disorders of a variety of body systems – and then on a body-systems basis. Following on from Professor Abbott's The Practice of Sheep Veterinary Medicine, a review of the systems and strategies available to improve the welfare of sheep in extensive farming systems is included, as well as discussion of pain relief, analgesia and anaesthesia for sheep. The text is illustrated with over 150 images and photographs, the majority in full colour.

Book Long Island Sound

    Book Details:
  • Author : James S. Latimer
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-11-22
  • ISBN : 146146126X
  • Pages : 576 pages

Download or read book Long Island Sound written by James S. Latimer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Ocean Commission Report identified the need for regional ecosystem assessments to support coastal and ocean management. These assessments must provide greater understanding of physical and biological dynamics than assessments at global and national scales can provide but transcend state and local interests. This need and timeliness is apparent for Long Island Sound, where a multi-state regional restoration program is underway for America’s most urbanized estuary. Synthesis of the Long Island Sound ecosystem is needed to integrate knowledge across disciplines and provide insight into understanding and managing pressing issues, such as non-point sources of pollution, coastal development, global climatic change, and invasive species. Currently, there is a need for a comprehensive volume that summarizes the ecological and environmental dynamics and status of Long Island Sound and its myriad ecosystems. It has been 30 years since a comprehensive summary of Long Island Sound was prepared and 50 years since the pioneering work of Gordon Riley. Major advances in estuarine science are providing new insights into these systems, and yet, the condition of many estuaries is in decline in the face of continuing coastal development. There is an opportunity to lay a foundation for integrative coastal observing systems that truly provide the foundation for improved decision-making. This book will provide a key reference of our scientific understanding for work performed over the past three decades and guide future research and monitoring in a dynamic urbanized estuary.

  • Author : Ndangwa Noyoo
  • Publisher : Adonis & Abbey Publishers Ltd
  • Release : 2013-07-18
  • ISBN : 1912234920
  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book SOCIAL WELFARE IN ZAMBIA written by Ndangwa Noyoo and published by Adonis & Abbey Publishers Ltd. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses social welfare activities in Zambia in the pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial periods. It explains how indigenous social welfare initiatives in colonial Zambia, culminated in the Federation of Welfare Societies. The former became the first nationalist party in this era known as the Northern Rhodesia Congress (NRC), with Godwin Mbikusita Lewanika as its leader. The book also elucidates how the first African government, which was headed by Kenneth Kaunda, attained positive human development indictors in Zambia in the 1960s. Nonetheless, this was at the expense of Barotseland as Kaunda's government had deliberately underdeveloped Barotseland after independence, whilst harassing and imprisoning Barotse activists for decades. After 1991, successive governments continued to apply Kaunda's methods. The book contends that Zambia in its present form is an illegal state, because the Barotseland Agreement was abrogated by Kaunda in 1969. This treaty was meant to amalgamate the former British Protectorates of Barotseland and Northern Rhodesia to form Zambia in 1964.
