Book Scouting in Hong Kong 1910 2010

Download or read book Scouting in Hong Kong 1910 2010 written by Paul Kua and published by Propius Press. This book was released on 2024-05-05 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scouting in Hong Kong, 1910-2010: Citizenship training in colonial and Chinese contexts, originally issued in 2011 as a hardcover book when the Hong Kong youth movement celebrated its centenary, is republished with revisions in 2024 as a paperback and an ebook. The narratives and analyses developed here covered the "what, how, when and who" and the "why and so what" of the development of the Hong Kong Scout Movement from 1910 to 2010, using a large volume of primary sources. It tells the story of Hong Kong Scouting based the theme of citizenship training for youth and its defining categories, esp. that of race, class, gender, and age, both colonial and post'colonial. The book is also richly illustrated with interesting and instructive images, many of which came from the Hong Kong Scout Archives. The study, originally based on a Ph. D. dissertation, is not meant to be an institutional hagiography. Instead, it is a critical study aimed at both general readers and readers with more specific interests, and should enrich their understanding of the histories of Scouting, youth, citizenship education, the colonies, the British Empire, and decolonization, China and Hong Kong.

Book Hong Kong s History

Download or read book Hong Kong s History written by Tak-Wing Ngo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rewriting Hong Kong's history from the bottom up, the chapters investigate vital, but hitherto obscured, aspects of the colony's rise. They cover the Chinese collaboration with the colonial regime, legal discrimination and intimidation, rural politics, social movements, government-business relations, industrial policy, flexible manufacturing and colonial historiography. Drawing together contributions from historians, sociologists and political scientists, the book highlights the role played by a variety of social actors in Hong Kong's history and differs both from recent celebrations of British colonialism and anti-colonial Chinese nationalism.

Book The Hong Kong Region 1850 1911

Download or read book The Hong Kong Region 1850 1911 written by James Hayes and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1977, The Hong Kong Region is a historical reconstruction of long-settled village and township society in Hong Kong's New Territories between 1850 and 1911. The book's central argument is that the gentry and bureaucracy played almost no role in these communities, which were run by local peasants and shopkeepers who had to deal virtually unaided with routine administration and with every form of disaster, natural or man-made. A substantial new introduction reviews the research and its wider implications for our understanding of traditional Chinese society in the light of later scholarly studies.

Book A Pattern of Life Essays on Rural Hong Kong by James Hayes

This book was released on 2021-02-13 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “For myself, however, it is the human element, the recollected words, the remembered faces, which give life to the printed record.” James Hayes’s many writings have made a major contribution to knowledge about life in rural Hong Kong. This book presents sixteen of his illuminating and original articles, each of which is rooted in his experiences as a district officer, administering and visiting villages under his care. His interest in the life and lives of the people went far beyond the formal demands of his official work, and Dr Hayes grew to admire and respect the villagers. As a result, his writings are suffused with his affection and esteem. Intended for scholars in the field of New Territories history as well as general readers interested in rural life in the region, A Pattern of Life provides a fascinating, academically important, yet highly readable picture of traditional life in rural South China and reinforces Dr Hayes’s reputation as one of the most important writers on the New Territories. “[James was] the archetypical example of those remarkable Colonial Service officers who became fascinated by, and deeply engaged with, the territories and people which it was their task to administer.” – Lord Wilson of Tillyorn Governor of Hong Kong (1987–1992)

Book Public Administration in Hong Kong

Download or read book Public Administration in Hong Kong written by Ian Scott and published by Marshall Cavendish Academic. This book was released on 2005 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series Public Administration in Asia provides a periodically updatable resource that examines the public administrations of Asian countries looking at all the factors involved in the formulation of public policies. The Hong Kong civil service has experienced considerable change since the retrocession to China in 1997. The new political order has attempted to exert more control over the public sector, to introduce new approaches to formulating and implementing policy, and to re-define the relationships between the government and the public. In this book, the author describes the system of public administration in this changed political context, compares the way in which it now operates with that of its colonial predecessor, and analyzes the difficulties which the new regime and the public sector has faced in meeting the challenges posed by economic recession, epidemics and the fierce debates generated by its constitutional policies.
