Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annotations on the Epistles of Paul: To the Romans and I. Corinthians, Chaps; I. IV The epistle discusses, therefore, the principles that underly this thought of the world-embracing influence of the church at Rome. The thoughts here recorded are not new to the Apostle. They are the mature product of his most profound reflections in his solitary journeys and voyages, and in his efforts to bring the knowledge of Christ to men of all nationalities and of all classes and conditions of life. As at Rome all meet, so at the very idea of Rome, these thoughts are focussed, and flow forth in a continuous discourse by an inner necessity of his nature, impelled and guided by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Starting with the statement of the design of his Apostleship to bring all the nations into obedience to the faith, ch. I 5, he expounds the theme of the universality OF the grace OF god IN christ. After an Introduction (ch. I 1 the theme is announced, and the argument proceeds: I. All alike under condemnation (1 18 - 3 II. All alike are offered Justification by Faith (3 21-5 III. The Universality of grace, no apology for sin (6 12 - 8 IV. Relation of this doctrine to Judaism (9 1 - 11 V. Practical Exhortations (12 1 - 15 VI. Personal Matters, 15 14 - 16 27. Book The Annotated Book in the Early Middle Ages

Download or read book The Annotated Book in the Early Middle Ages written by Mariken Teeuwen and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotations in modern books are a phenomenon that often causes disapproval: we are not supposed to draw, doodle, underline, or highlight in our books. In many medieval manuscripts, however, the pages are filled with annotations around the text and in-between the lines. In some cases, a 'white space' around the text is even laid out to contain extra text, pricked and ruled for the purpose. Just as footnotes are an approved and standard part of the modern academic book, so the flyleaves, margins, and interlinear spaces of many medieval manuscripts are an invitation to add extra text. This volume focuses on annotation in the early medieval period. In treating manuscripts as mirrors of the medieval minds who created them - reflecting their interests, their choices, their practices - the essays explore a number of key topics. Are there certain genres in which the making of annotations seems to be more appropriate or common than in others? Are there genres in which annotating is 'not done'? Are there certain monastic centres in which annotating practices flourish, and from which they spread? The volume thus investigates whether early medieval annotators used specific techniques, perhaps identifiable with their scribal communities or schools. It explores what annotators actually sought to accomplish with their annotations, and how the techniques of annotating developed over time and per region.

Book Annotations on the Epistles of Paul to the Ephesians Philippians Colossians Thessalonians Classic Reprint

Download or read book Annotations on the Epistles of Paul to the Ephesians Philippians Colossians Thessalonians Classic Reprint written by Edward T. Horn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annotations on the Epistles of Paul to the Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Thessalonians The church addressed. There are some doubts whether this epistle was addressed to the Church at Ephesus. The absence of personal references and of allusions to the previous intimate relations between Paul and that Church is remarkable. The doubts suggested by this circumstance are increased by the omission of the words for in Ephesus (i I) in several of the best manuscripts of the New Testament; for example, the Vatican and the Sinaitic. This omission is confirmed by certain statements of early writers. Tertullian is authority for the statement that the heretic Marcion declared the letter to be addressed to the Laodiceans. The writings of Origen and of Basil contain statements which indicate that they knew of texts which omitted the words for in Ephesus. Nevertheless these suggestions of doubt are only sporadic, and the large preponderance of historical proof both in the form of textual evidence and ancient testi mony is in favor of Ephesus as the destination of the epistle.
