Book excerpt: At the time of its establishment in 1966, by the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU), the Committee on Data for Science and Technol ogy (CODATA) was given the basic mission of promoting and encouraging, on a worldwide basis, the production and distribution of compendia and of collections of critically selected numerical data on substances other forms of interest and importance to science and technology. To accomplish this aim, the following tasks were assigned to CODATA: (1) To ascertain, on a worldwide basis, what work on compilation of numerical data is being carried on in each country and under each union, and from this information, to prepare and distribute a Directory or Com pendium of the Data-Compiling Projects and Related Publications of the World; (2) To achieve coordination of existing programs and to recommend new programs; (3) To encourage, from all appropriate sources, financial support for work on compilation; (4) To encourage the use of internationally approved symbols, units, constants, terminology, and nomenclature; (5) To encourage and coordinate research on new methods for preparing and disseminating data for science and technology. In its first two years of operation, 1966 to 1968, in Washington, D. c. , U. S. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until comparatively recently, trace analysis techniques were in general directed toward the determination of impurities in bulk materials. Methods were developed for very high relative sensitivity, and the values determined were average values. Sampling procedures were devised which eliminated the so-called sampling error. However, in the last decade or so, a number of developments have shown that, for many purposes, the distribution of defects within a material can confer important new properties on the material. Perhaps the most striking example of this is given by semiconductors; a whole new industry has emerged in barely twenty years based entirely on the controlled distribu tion of defects within what a few years before would have been regarded as a pure, homogeneous crystal. Other examples exist in biochemistry, metallurgy, polyiners and, of course, catalysis. In addition to this of the importance of distribution, there has also been a recognition growing awareness that physical defects are as important as chemical defects. (We are, of course, using the word defect to imply some dis continuity in the material, and not in any derogatory sense. ) This broadening of the field of interest led the Materials Advisory Board( I} to recommend a new definition for the discipline, "Materials Character ization," to encompass this wider concept of the determination of the structure and composition of materials. In characterizing a material, perhaps the most important special area of interest is the surface.

Book excerpt: This volume presents some of the papers from the 15th Mid-America Symposium on Spectroscopy held in Chicago on June 2-5, 1964. The Mid-America Symposium is sponsored annually by the Chicago Section of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy, in cooperation with the St. Louis, Niagara Frontier, Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, and Milwaukee sections of the Society and the Chicago Gas Chromatography Discussion Group. Although basically a regional meeting, the Symposium continues to draw enthusiastic attendance from coast to coast and numerous foreign countries. The present volume contains 45 of the 110 papers presented at the Symposium. It is with some misgiving that we offer this volume as the proceedings of the meeting with less than half of the total papers included. However, it is the opinion of the Symposium Committee that publication of the excellent material available from the Symposium provides a valuable addition to the literature in the field of spectroscopy. Response to previous volumes of this series seems to verify this opinion. As Chairman of the Symposium and Editor of this volume, I express my sincere appreciation to the authors whose manuscripts make up this volume. Book excerpt: The Alloy Data Center, part of the National Standard Reference Data System, has two primary functions. One is to stimulate cooperation and coordination among the existing data centers in the area of the physical properties of well characterized alloys. The final data generated by these centers for publication should be consistent with one another where correlation or possible overlap exists. The other purpose is the collection (from publications as well as private communications), evaluation, and publication of data in some areas where special competence exists in the Alloy Physics Section. Of interest to the center are metals, semimetals, intermetallic compounds, and alloys. Excluded are those materials which have ill-defined constitutions and heat treatments. An automated system was developed to meet the bibliographic needs of the center. This system will be described as well as the specific properties of interest. The system presently contains a complete annotated file dealing with NMR Knight shift measurements. The soft X-ray spectroscopy compilation is being kept up-to-date with the same system. (Author).

Book excerpt: Since the first edition of this book was published early in 1970, three major developments have occurred in the field of x-ray spectrochemical analysis. First, wavelength-dispersive spectrometry, in 1970 already securely established among instrumental analytical methods, has matured. Highly sophisticated, miniaturized, modular, solid-state circuitry has replaced elec tron-tube circuitry in the readout system. Computers are now widely used to program and control fully automated spectrometers and to store, process, and compute analytical concentrations directly and immediately from ac cumulated count data. Matrix effects have largely yielded to mathematical treatment. The problems associated with the ultralong-wavelength region have been largely surmounted. Indirect (association) methods have extended the applicability of x-ray spectrometry to the entire periodic table and even to certain classes of compounds. Modern commercial, computerized, auto matic, simultaneous x-ray spectrometers can index up to 60 specimens in turn into the measurement position and for each collect count data for up to 30 elements and read out the analytical results in 1--4 min-all corrected for absorption-enhancement and particle-size or surface-texture effects and wholly unattended. Sample preparation has long been the time-limiting step in x-ray spectrochemical analysis. Second, energy-dispersive spectrometry, in 1970 only beginning to assume its place among instrumental analytical methods, has undergone phenomenal development and application and, some believe, may supplant wavelength spectrometry for most applications in the foreseeable future.
