Book Annette Messager the Messengers

Download or read book Annette Messager the Messengers written by Annette Messager and published by Prestel Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The full range of one of today s most versatile artists is on vivid display in this heavily illustrated, lavishly produced and comprehensive monograph on the art of Annette Messager. From her earliest works, in which she posed taxidermized sparrows in knitted garments, to her magnificent three-room installation, Casino, which won her the Golden Lion award at the 2005 Venice Biennale, Annette Messager has long tackled issues of femininity, prejudice, social mores, birth, and death. Illustrated with more than 600 images that track her entire career to date, this book designed by the artist herself includes interviews, texts by the artist, sketches, installations and photographs of her work. Messager s work encompasses the highly personal, such as ink blots made from her own signatures, diary entries, her children s drawings, to the political, for example effigies displaying acts of torture and abuse. She employs a wide range of materials, including fabric, wool, found objects, personal sketches and photography, through which she catalogs and mines these themes. As varied as its subject, this beautifully produced volume demonstrates Messager's powerful ability to transform the stuff of life into objects of potent expression.

Book Portraits in Life and Death

Download or read book Portraits in Life and Death written by Peter Hujar and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2024-10-08 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new edition of the cult classic photography book by the legendary Peter Hujar. “I am moved by the purity of [Hujar’s] intentions.... These memento mori can exorcise morbidity as effectively as they evoke its sweet poetry and its panic.” —Susan Sontag Portraits in Life and Death is the only book of photographs published by Peter Hujar during his lifetime. The twenty-nine portraits of creative people—ranging from William Burroughs, Susan Sontag, and John Waters to Larry Ree, founder of the Trocadero Gloxinia Ballet Company, and T.C. (whose identity is unclear)—possess a haunting beauty and degree of psychological examination that is both offbeat and riveting. Following the portraits come eleven images that can only be described as devastating: pictures of semi-preserved, clothed bodies of nineteenth-century Sicilians found in the arid catacombs beneath a church in Palermo. There is no necessary connection in the photographs themselves or between the two sections of the book, yet the pictorial progression from life to death is an emblem of the journey we all take. The living subjects seem to be meditating on the mortality that is limned with such profound effect in the catacomb pictures. In different ways, both groups of images speak to the basic fears and emotions that we carry with us, somewhere beyond our consciousness. After viewing this extraordinary book, it is almost impossible not to make those connections and interpretations or be moved by Hujar’s consistent ability to convey what appears to be the inner spirit of his subjects. Even so, an air of nonchalance, even gaiety, hovers over the photographs. The book is odd, oblique, sometimes opaque, and certainly deeply felt; but it sticks to the mind like a burr. It will be noticed. Once seen, it cannot be forgotten.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To what extent can music be employed to shape one culture's understanding of another? In the American imagination, Japan has represented the "most alien" nation for over 150 years. This perceived difference has inspired fantasies--of both desire and repulsion--through which Japanese culture has profoundly impacted the arts and industry of the U.S. While the influence of Japan on American and European painting, architecture, design, theater, and literature has been celebrated in numerous books and exhibitions, the role of music has been virtually ignored until now. W. Anthony Sheppard's Extreme Exoticism offers a detailed documentation and wide-ranging investigation of music's role in shaping American perceptions of the Japanese, the influence of Japanese music on American composers, and the place of Japanese Americans in American musical life. Presenting numerous American encounters with and representations of Japanese music and Japan, this book reveals how music functions in exotic representation across a variety of genres and media, and how Japanese music has at various times served as a sign of modernist experimentation, a sounding board for defining American music, and a tool for reshaping conceptions of race and gender. From the Tin Pan Alley songs of the Russo-Japanese war period to Weezer's Pinkerton album, music has continued to inscribe Japan as the land of extreme exoticism.

Book Secular Spirituality

  • Author : Lynn L. Sharp
  • Publisher : Lexington Books

  • Pages : 282 pages

Download or read book Secular Spirituality written by Lynn L. Sharp and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secular Spirituality challenges the traditional dichotomy between Enlightenment reason and religion. It follows French romantic socialists' and spiritists' search for a new spirituality based on reincarnation as a path to progress for individuals and society. Leaders like Allan Kardec argued for social reform; spiritist groups strove for equality; and women mediums challenged gender roles. Lynn L. Sharp looks closely at what it meant to practice spiritism, analyszing the movement's social and political critique and explaining the popularity of the new belief. She explores points of convergence and conflict in the interplay between spiritism and science, spiritism and psychology, and spiritism and the Catholic church to argue that the nineteenth century was not as 'disenchanted' as has been thought. Secular Spirituality successfully places spiritism within a larger cultural conversation, going beyond the leaders of the movement to look at the way spiritism functioned for its followers.

Book excerpt: One of the rising stars in the international art scene, Kader Attia (b. 1970) is a French-Algerian multidisciplinary artist whose powerful yet complex images, objects and installations examine the way cultures and histories have been constructed.Attia often plays with the vocabulary of museums and architecture to trouble the boundaries between different worlds, particularly Western and non-Western, through his use of re-appropriated and repaired everyday objects and ephemera, such as African masks, stapled paving cracks, assemblages of prostheses and photographs of surgical reconstruction. An in-depth interview with Hayward Gallery director Ralph Rugoff explores the artist's major themes, while art historians and other experts draw out particular threads to examine in depth. Compact but wide-ranging, this is a publication to be held in the hand - an indispensable first guide to an artist with an exceptional perspective on the way humans think about their place in the world. The book features an interview with Ralph Rugoff and essays by Nicola Clayton, Jean-Michel Frodon, Francoise Vergès and Giovanna Zapperi.Published alongside Hayward Gallery's exhibition, London (12 February - 6 May 2019).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in the field of vasopressin and oxytocin. In the summer of 1997, scientists from over 20 countries congregated in Montreal for the 1997 World Congress of Neurohypophysial Hormones, a conference that united the fields of vasopressin, neurohypophysis and oxytocin in a single joint meeting that gave rise to the present book. The organization of a joint meeting was prompted by several recent developments. Specifically the molecular characterization of the vasopressin/oxytocin receptor family made it mandatory to adopt an integrated view and to discuss the vasopressin/oxytocin ligand/receptor family as a whole. To ensure em phasis on novelty, the conference focused on advances made over the last two years and also included important contributions by scientists that had not previously been associated with the vasopressin/oxytocin field. Vasopressin and oxytocin are two neurohormones that exert a wide spectrum of cen tral and peripheral actions. Accordingly, the vasopressin/oxytocin field embraces a large number of different domains, ranging from neuroscience, endocrinology, and oncology to renal, reproductive, and cardiovascular physiology and pathology.
