Download or read book Heads of Families at the First Census of the United States Taken in the Year 1790 written by United States Bureau of the Census and published by . This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First Census of the United States (1790) comprised an enumeration of the inhabitants of the present states of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. Unfortunately, during the War of 1812, when the British burned the Capitol at Washington, the returns for Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Virginia were destroyed. For Virginia, however, taxpayer lists were published in an attempt to partially reconstruct the original returns. Fortunately, the census records for Connecticut survived and were available for this 1908 publication. In March 1790, Connecticut had a population of 237,946, out of a total population of approximately 3,920,000. The information provided in this census includes the Name of Head of Family, the number of free white males of 16 years and upward in the household, the number of free white males and under living in the household, the number of free white females, all other free persons, and the number of slaves. Populations are also recorded for Towns and Counties.

Book Heads of Families at the First Census of the United States Taken in the Year 1790

Download or read book Heads of Families at the First Census of the United States Taken in the Year 1790 written by United States Bureau Of The Census and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-16 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heads of Families at the First Census of the United States Taken in the Year 1790: New York The First Census of the United States (1790) com prised an enumeration of the inhabitants of the present states of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. A complete set of the schedules for each state, with a summary for the counties, and in many cases for towns, was filed in the State Department, but unfortunately they are not now complete, the returns for the states of Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey, Tennes see, and Virginia having been destroyed when the British burned the Capitol at Washington during the War of 1812. For several of the states for which schedules are lacking it is probable that the Director of the Census could obtain lists which would present the names of most of the heads of families at the date of the First Census. In Virginia, state enumerations were made in 1782, 1783, 1784, and 1785, but the lists on file in the State Library include the names for only 39 of the 78 counties into which the state was divided. This book was released on 1992 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No other official record or group of records is as historically significant as the 1790 census of the United States. The taking of this census marked the inauguration of a process that continues right up to our own day--the enumeration at ten-year intervals of the entire American population. In its very continuity the census is a mirror image of the evolution of the American republic, and the census of 1790, the first official enumeration of all heads of household residing in the infant republic, is the true starting point of this process, the place where we can point a finger and say with confidence, "This is where it started! From here on we deal with facts!"
