Download or read book Annals of Calais Maine and St Stephen New Brunswick written by Isaac Case Knowlton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of Calais, Maine and St. Stephen, New Brunswick: Including the Village of Milltown, Me;, And the Present Town of Milltown, N. B In 1790, the population of Calais is said to have been only sixteen; in 1800, it was about 100; in 1810, some 200; in 1820, 418; in 1830, 1686; in 1840, 2934; in 1850, 4749; in 1860, 5621; in 1870, 5944. The valuation of taxable property in Calais in 1851, was $824, - 932; in 1856, $1,180,616; in 1866, $1,262,552; in 1874, $2,039,512; but these figures represent only about two thirds of the actual, market value of the property. Calais was incorporated as a town, in 1809; and as a city, in 1851. The parish of St. Stephen, incorporated as a town in 1871, and divided into two towns, St. Stephen and Milltown, in 1873, has from the first had a larger population and more wealth than Calais. At present, the three town have about 14,000 inhabitants, and possess at least $6,000,000 worth of property; and the growth, though not rapid, is steady. It seemed to the writer that a locality of this size and importance deserved to have its history rescued from oblivion; and this volume is an attempt in that direction. The task has been difficult and laborious, and the materials on record, scanty. If the work is defective, - if in the thousands of names and dates given, there are some mistakes, - still this book will keep the fathers in honored remembrance, and aid the future historian in preparing a more perfect work. Download or read book Churches and Social Order in Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Canada written by Michael Gauvreau and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2006 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changing social and cultural strategies pursued by Protestant and Catholic religious institutions have shaped the social order in Quebec and English Canada. Through a sustained comparison of Protestantism and Catholicism, this volume explores the transition from pre-industrial to industrial society and challenges conventional chronologies of religious change.By examinng education, charity, community discipline, the relationship between clergy and congregations, and working-class religion, the contributors shift the field of religious history into the realm of the socio-cultural. This novel perspective reveals that the Christian churches remained dynamic and popular in English and French Canada, as well as among immigrants, well into the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: For decades, people living in adjacent communities along the Canada–US border enjoyed close social and economic relationships with their neighbours across the line. The introduction of new security measures during the First World War threatened this way of life by restricting the movement of people and goods across the border. Many Canadians resented the new regulations introduced by their provincial and federal governments, deriding them as “outside influences” that created friction where none had existed before. Engaging the Line examines responses to wartime regulations in several border communities, including Windsor, Ontario; Detroit, Michigan; and White Rock, British Columbia. This book brings to life the repercussions for these communities and offers readers a glimpse at the origins of our modern, highly secured border by tracing the shifting relationship between citizens and the state during wartime.

Book Remembering and Forgetting in Acadie

Download or read book Remembering and Forgetting in Acadie written by Ronald Rudin and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2009-05-01 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 2004 and 2005, Acadians observed two major anniversaries in their history: the 400th anniversary of the birth of Acadie and the 250th anniversary of their deportation at the hands of the British. Attending many of the commemorative activities that marked the anniversaries, Ronald Rudin has documented these events as an "embedded historian." Conducting interviews and collecting the opinions of Acadians, Anglophones, and First Nations, Remembering and Forgetting in Acadie examines the variety of ways in which the past is publicly presented and remembered. A profound and accessible study of the often-conflicting purposes of public history, Rudin details the contentious cultural, political, and historical issues that were prompted by these anniversaries. Offering an astounding collection of materials, Remembering and Forgetting in Acadie is also accompanied by a website (www.rememberingacadie.concordia.ca) that provides access to films, audio clips, and photographs assembled on Rudin's journey through public memory.
