Book excerpt: "Anna Leonowens has been a historical puzzle. Susan Morgan establishes a solid ground for our understanding of this intriguing writer who became famous in our time thanks to a Broadway musical. Her life and contributions as a writer, a humanist, and a 19th century feminist were far richer beyond being the 'I' with the King."—Thongchai Winichakul, author of Siam Mapped: A History of the Geo-Body of a Nation "With extraordinary detective work, Susan Morgan uncovers the real tale of a brilliant and dynamic traveler who cut ties to her past history and fabricated the story of her life that has found its way into legend. In lovely and graceful prose, she uses this story to help us understand patterns of national and international life."—Allan M. Winkler, author of Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Making of Modern America "With sensitive writing and meticulous research, Bombay Anna offers the first comprehensive biography of Anna Leonowens, the 'I' in The King and I, which gave my father, Yul Brynner, his signature role. The details of her self-invention are only part of the revelation Susan Morgan provides; she also paints a masterful portrait of the Britain's Raj and its colonial hegemony in Southeast Asia. It is a fascinating read." —Prof. Rock Brynner, author of Yul: The Man Who Would Be King

Book Sweet Lamb of Heaven A Novel

Download or read book Sweet Lamb of Heaven A Novel written by Lydia Millet and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2016-05-03 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longlisted for the National Book Award for Fiction: Blending domestic thriller and psychological horror, this compelling page-turner follows a mother fleeing her estranged husband. Lydia Millet’s previous work has been shortlisted for the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Likewise greeted with rapturous praise, Sweet Lamb of Heaven is a first-person account of a young mother, Anna, fleeing her cold and unfaithful husband, a businessman who’s just launched his first campaign for political office. When Ned chases Anna and their six-year-old daughter from Alaska to Maine, the two go into hiding in a run-down motel on the coast. But the longer they stay, the less the guests in the dingy motel look like typical tourists—and the less Ned resembles a typical candidate. As his pursuit of Anna and their child moves from threatening to criminal, Ned begins to alter his wife’s world in ways she never could have imagined. A double-edged and satisfying story with a strong female protagonist, a thrilling plot, and a creeping sense of the apocalyptic, Sweet Lamb of Heaven builds to a shattering ending with profound implications for its characters—and for all of us.

Download or read book Searching For Paradise written by T.L. Hughes and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2015-11-11 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his sophisticated debut novel, T.L. Hughes draws on his New England upbringing in an Irish Catholic family to tell the story of his main character, Mike Hogan’s, cross country venture from Southern California back to the small mill town where he grew up. The lure of the road reunites Mike and his two travel companions with old friends, family, and acquaintances. As the three friends bounce from place to place, freeloading across the expanses of beautiful America, they see life again through those they once knew and loved and through new friends and experiences. In the process of it all, they rediscover the goodness within themselves that was always there. Searching For Paradise is a coming of age story filled with vivid imagery and resonating musical references to the artists and songs of the 1970s and 1980s. Above all else it is a love story of great depth and beauty. "While 'Searching for Paradise' by T. L. Hughes comes to us as a highway story, the book is as much about the elemental pull of tribal roots as it is about the lure of the road." - Paul Marion, The Lowell Sun "Beautifully written and engagingly presented, SEARCHING FOR PARADISE is a road trip where the characters drive back to their roots in search of where they came from, but seek to transcend their past lives in search of something more exciting, more attainable, yet more liberating." ~IndieReader "Tom Wolfe's admonition that 'you can't go home again' is belayed by the experiences in Searching for Paradise. Sure, you can go home again - and re-view it from the vantage point of new insights and life experiences. Connections between past and present are well done in a story that reveals just where this paradise is to be found." - D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

Book Nana s Adventures in Heaven

Download or read book Nana s Adventures in Heaven written by Natachia Dodd and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-09-08 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nana's Adventures in Heaven is a wonderful book about heaven and what it will be like. Nana had a dream that inspired her to know what Heaven would be like when she gets there. This book has been received with rave reviews from children and elderly alike. It offers a peace of mind and a warm heart. Look for the next book to follow... Pop-pop's Adventures in Heaven Introduction of the book: Heaven is almost indescribable and filled with so much love I had to share and comfort others. Why I wrote this story... I had been sick with cancer for a long time and was saddened to think of the end. My future looked bleak and I was doubtful about the afterlife and was never very sure of Heaven and what it would be like which is why this hit me so hard. I began to pray and pray very hard for God to grant me the end of my life. I was so tired of suffering, feeling ill and continuing with chemotherapy. I was ready to quit it all when one day my grandchildren came to visit me. My appearance was not what they were expecting to see. I sat there with no hair, dark eyes and extremely thin from the weight I lost. That night when they left I was terribly sad and prayed for God to end my life, but was afraid of what the afterlife was to hold for me. Unbeknownst to me that night my grandchildren prayed very hard for me to get well. As I fell asleep that night I had the most vivid and very real dream about heaven. The happiness I felt filled my heart and soul. I can barely explain the amount of joy, love and most importantly health I felt. When I awoke the next morning I was sad to discover I wasn't there anymore, but the thought came to me as if God spoke directly to me...write it for your grandchildren. This book describes the sights, brilliant colors and things I saw on my brief visit to heaven. I dedicate this book to my grandchildren and all children so they may know that their loved ones are beyond happy and they are in the most wonderful place they can imagine. It is a place where love flows beyond measure and where we look on our loved ones left behind. It is a wonderful place where one day I will return and pray it gives love and hope to all who read it.
