Download or read book Anna Hume written by Thomas P. Roche Jr. and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little is known of Anna Hume except as the translator of the first three of Petrach's Trionfi and also as the daughter of David Hume of Godscroft whose History of the Houses of Douglas and Angus she edited in one of its troubled versions. This volume reprints her translation of Petrarch's The Triumphs of Love - a series of six poems celebrating Petrarch's purported devotion to Laura. The poems tell a tale of Love's triumph over the poet, superseded by the triumph of chastity (in that Laura did not yield to Petrarch's love) which is in turn superseded by the triumph of death over Laura. Hume's 1644 translation is reproduced here with five related texts as appendices - an emblem and poem by Robert Farley; the translation of The Triumph of Eternitie by Elizabeth I; the translation of The Triumph of Death by Mary Sidney Herbert; illustrations from Il Petrarcha con l'espositione di M. Alessandro Vellutello...and the translation of lines 102-172 of The Triumph of Death by Barbarina Ogle Brand, Lady Dacre.
Download or read book Literature and the Scottish Reformation written by David George Mullan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the twentieth century Scottish literary studies was dominated by a critical consensus that critiqued contemporary anti-Catholic by advancing a re-reading of the Reformation. This consensus understood that Scotland's rich medieval culture had been replaced with an anti-aesthetic tyranny of life and letters. As a result, Scottish literature has consistently been defined in opposition to the Calvinism to which it frequently returns. Yet, as the essays in this collection show, such a consensus appears increasingly untenable in light both of recent research and a more detailed survey of Scottish literature. This collection launches a full-scale reconsideration of the series of relationships between literature and reformation in early modern Scotland. Previous scholarship in this area has tended to dismiss the literary value of the writing of the period - largely as a reaction to its regular theological interests. Instead the essays in this volume reinforce recent work that challenges the received scholarly consensus by taking these interests seriously. This volume argues for the importance of this religiously orientated writing, through the adoption of a series of interdisciplinary approaches. Arranged chronologically, the collection concentrates on major authors and texts while engaging with a number of contemporary critical issues and so highlighting, for example, writing by women in the period. It addresses the concerns of historians and theologians who have routinely accepted the established reading of this period of literary history in Scotland and offers a radically new interpretation of the complex relationships between literature and religious reform in early modern Scotland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition argues that Petrarch's text has been neglected by modern scholarship in favour of the translations of the Canzoniere, while it can be shown that the Triumphi enjoyed a much earlier and much more durable fame in Europe as well as in the British Isles, being translated at least twice in its entirety, with individual books and smaller sections being translated or adapted a number of times. Critical editions of the translations are accompanied by analysis of the reception of Petrarch's work in the British Isles, looking at the circulation of the book in the original Italian and in the various French translations, as well as at the use that is made of the Triumphi motifs not only in literature, but in paintings, music, etc.

Download or read book Petrarch in English written by Thomas Roche and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2005-12-01 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Franceso Petrarch (1304-1374), creator of the sonnet form, remained for more than three hundred years the most influential poet in Europe, his works more widely read than even those of Dante. This collection contains English language versions of his poems from across six centuries, in a wide variety of translations and reinterpretations. Spanning the Trionfi series and the Canzoniere - Petrarch's empassioned sonnet-sequence concerning his beloved Laura - it also includes great English poems influenced by Petrarch. From Chaucer's early adaptation of a Petrarchan sonnet in Troilus and Criseyde to the sixteenth century translations by the Earl of Surrey, Byron's mocking consideration of the Canzoniere in Don Juan and Ezra Pound's parody Silet, all provide a unique insight into the significance of the founder of the European lyric tradition.
