Book excerpt: "How Anita came to be with Brian is really the story of how the Stones became the Stones. She almost single-handedly engineered a cultural revolution in London by bringing together the Stones and the jeunesse dorée...The Stones came away with a patina of aristocratic decadence that served as a perfect counterfoil to the raw roots blues of their music. This...transformed the Stones from pop stars into cultural icons." --Marianne Faithfull Pallenberg epitomised the hedonistic counter-culture world of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll during the sixties and seventies; muse to the Rolling Stones and star of enduring cult movies like Barbarella and Performance, this is Anita's incredible story of excess, art, motherhood, and her often unknown influence on one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

Book The Complete Transcripts of the Clarence Thomas Anita Hill Hearings

Download or read book The Complete Transcripts of the Clarence Thomas Anita Hill Hearings written by Anita Miller and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2005-08-01 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains not only the complete verbatim transcript of the testimony given before the Senate Judiciary Committee on October 11, 12 and 13, 1991, but, as Nina Totenberg points out in her preface, "the important exhibits that were submitted - affidavits aimed at discrediting Hill, and the sworn testimony of the so-called "other woman," Angela Wright, who had worked for Thomas and, like Hill, claimed he made lewd and inappropriate remarks to her." Wright herself was never called to testify before the cameras. But she did give telephone testimony to the committee staff - as did her friend Rose Jourdain - and that testimony is included here. Although more that two years have passed since these hearings were held, public interest remains high. With their implications for attitudes toward race, gender and sexual harassment, the issues and emotions created by the hearings are still of vital importance to literate, thinking Americans. History, someone said, is what happens before you know it. Thus, many events come clear only in retrospect. This book will at last allow the general interest reader the opportunity to develop a calm and reasoned insight into those explosive and historic three days.

Book excerpt: Still flustered from her conversation with Jake, Anita entered her father's den. Looking around her at the books and resources the room housed, Anita despaired that she would never measure up to her father, a criminal lawyer known the world over for his work. Flopping down into the cozy leather chair behind the desk, Anita put her head down, neglecting her studies, and concentrated on where she was going to find a date; after all, she had to show Jake she wasn't a prude. Contemplating her next move, Anita made a phone call to her best, and only friend, Carolyn. The word 'opposites' described them to a tee; Carolyn was bouncy, carefree, and outgoing. Nothing bothered her. Anita on the other hand, was studious, predicable, and had a conscious that drove her nuts. She was very much a Miss Priss. Learning of Anita's little dilemma, via Anita's phone conversation, Carolyn burst out laughing. She congratulated her friend on getting out of her little box, and told her not to worry, that everything would be taken care of. Hanging up the phone, Anita felt queasy; she was no longer in control, having given Carolyn the task of finding her a date for the party. She looked around the intimidating room once more before closing its door behind her. Any thought of concentrating on her studies had gone out the window.

Book Deciphering Motivation in Psychotherapy

Download or read book Deciphering Motivation in Psychotherapy written by David Mark Allen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have often stated to students that I felt that one of the most important characteristics of a psychotherapist is the ability to tolerate ambiguity. As Allen so aptly points out in this creative and valuable book, my observa tion contains an implicit assumption that requires a clear statement in order for it to be understood. Before ambiguity can be tolerated, it must be recognized. The psychotherapist who accepts the presentations of the pa tient at face value is never faced with the difficult problem of tolerating the ambiguity that is so intrinsic to the circumstances that bring many people to treatment. In this volume, Allen has undertaken the task of helping the reader to recognize ambiguity in all of its manifestations, to understand it better, and, having understood it, to help the patient to grow beyond it. Ambiguity, in Allen's view, arises from a dialectical conflict, whether it is between the self and the system, intrapsychic and wholly within the self, or social, when the individual is tom between competing reference groups. Psychotherapy is a process by which the dialectic can be brought to consciousness so that a synthesis can be achieved. The dialectic that engages the individual, and often is played out between the individual and the system, parallels the struggle between attachment and individuation.

Silver spinning objects spun from the man's hand, shooting through the air toward Janzene. At the same time, the assassin's body was hurled backward by the force of Janzene's bullet. The man staggered and fell, dead as he hit the floor. Janzene threw off his blanket and leaped to his feet, reaching the body shortly after it fell. A pool of blood was forming on the man's garment. Janzene looked at his assailant. Of all the people to attack him, he had expected least of all a Chinaman. Why had his visit to the Chinese area aroused such desire to kill him? What could the scroll he possessed contain? He shook his head. What had he gotten himself into?
