Download or read book Essays on Descartes written by Paul Hoffman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-17 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of Paul Hoffman's wide-ranging essays on Descartes composed over the past twenty-five years. The essays in Part I include his celebrated "The Unity of Descartes' Man," in which he argues that Descartes accepts the Aristotelian view that soul and body are related as form to matter and that the human being is a substance; a series of subsequent essays elaborating on this interpretation and defending it against objections; and an essay on Descartes' theory of distinction. In the essays in Part II he argues that Descartes retains the Aristotelian theory of causation according to which an agent's action is the same as the passion it brings about, and explains the significance of this doctrine for understanding Descartes' dualism and physics. In the essays in Part III he argues that Descartes accepts the Aristotelian theory of cognition according to which perception is possible because things that exist in the world are also capable of a different way of existing in the soul, and he shows how this theory figures in Descartes' account of misrepresentation and in the controversy over whether Descartes is a direct realist or a representationalist. The essays in Part IV examine Descartes' theory of the passions of the soul: their definition; their effect on our happiness, virtue, and freedom; and methods of controlling them.

Book The Ibsen Cycle

Download or read book The Ibsen Cycle written by Brian Johnston and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Attempting no less a task than to demonstrate that Ibsen planned his last twelve plays, beginning with Pillars of Society, as a cycle paralleling exactly Hegel's account of the evolution of the human consciousness, The Phenomenology of Mind, Johnston offers a fresh look at the Norwegian master. Although there is little specific biographical data in support of the author's thesis, he argues compellingly for it in his analysis of the texts themselves. After discussing Hegel's dramatic method of exposition and Ibsen's philosophy, Johnston examines each of the twelve plays in considerable detail. Provocative and sophisticated in its approach, this volume should be widely available to scholars and advanced students of modern drama. ---Library Journal

Book Guide to Personal Knowledge The Philosophy of Michael Polanyi

Download or read book Guide to Personal Knowledge The Philosophy of Michael Polanyi written by Dániel Paksi and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will help readers understand the most important book of Michael Polanyi, ‘Personal Knowledge’, and help them grasp the essence of his philosophical thinking. In this volume, Polanyi’s goals are first reconstructed, and then his main philosophical arguments are introduced. The discussion is limited to the most crucial ideas that are indispensable for the arc of his book: tacit knowledge, emergence and the fiduciary program. The thirteen chapters of this volume explain the essence of the thirteen chapters of ‘Personal Knowledge’. The page numbers in this book work just as well with the 2015 ‘Enlarged Edition‘ of ‘Personal Knowledge‘ as with the original issues. Whether you just want to get the key quotation and the context right on tacit knowledge, emergence or the fiduciary program, or want to have a deep dive for your scholarly research in philosophy and management, this book is for you.

Book A Serious Proposal to the Ladies

Download or read book A Serious Proposal to the Ladies written by Mary Astell and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2002-03-21 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Astell’s A Serious Proposal to the Ladies is one of the most important and neglected works advocating the establishment of women’s academies. Its reception was so controversial that Astell responded with a lengthy sequel, also in this volume. The cause of great notoriety, Astell’s Proposal was imitated by Defoe in his “An Academy for Women,” parodied in the Tatler, satirized on the stage, plagiarized by Bishop Berkeley, and later mocked by Gilbert and Sullivan in Princess Ida.

Book French Thinking about Animals

Download or read book French Thinking about Animals written by Louisa Mackenzie and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2015-04-01 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together leading scholars from Belgium, Canada, France, and the United States, French Thinking about Animals makes available for the first time to an Anglophone readership a rich variety of interdisciplinary approaches to the animal question in France. While the work of French thinkers such as Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze, and Felix Guattari has been available in English for many years, French Thinking about Animals opens up a much broader cross-cultural dialogue within animal studies. These original essays, many of which have been translated especially for this volume, draw on anthropology, ethology, geography, history, legal studies, phenomenology, and philosophy to interrogate human-animal relationships. They explore the many ways in which animals signify in French history, society, and intellectual history, illustrating the exciting new perspectives being developed about the animal question in the French-speaking world today. Built on the strength and diversity of these contributions, French Thinking about Animals demonstrates the interdisciplinary and internationalism that are needed if we hope to transform the interactions of humans and nonhuman animals in contemporary society.

Book Reimagining Capitalism Applying Negative Dialectics for a Better Future

Download or read book Reimagining Capitalism Applying Negative Dialectics for a Better Future written by David Atkinson and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2023-05-09 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Covid-19 pandemic reinforced the perception that capitalism is in crisis, that the future is volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous, and that, increasingly, our thinking about it and ability to manage and organize ourselves within it, are challenges we are ill-equipped for. Despite the efforts of many writers, and a surfeit of manuscripts concerning the need to rethink capitalism, questions concerning the struggle for social and economic justice remain unanswered. While some suggest that with corrective action, businesses can save the world, there is an acceptance that they cannot do so alone. However, while governments might strengthen their institutions, enacting more effective policies, the challenge is simply laid bare at the feet of industry and commerce. Is the challenge to confront the establishment just too big to face? Government institutions and the barons of industry and commerce are but interrelated, interconnected, interplaying components in one socio-economic system. This book offers readers a progressive, radical and academic provocation of that system; it also proposes a field of Applied Negative Dialectics. In 'Reimagining Capitalism', Atkinson confronts the need to rethink capitalism and presents an integrated range of thinking through a lens of applied negative dialectics, questioning how and why things might have occurred, and where and how we might begin to improve them.

Download or read book Globalization and Animal Law written by Thomas G. Kelch and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of the globalized economy has rendered an even more profound change in the relationship between humans and other animals than the ancient progression from huntergatherer to agricultural society. In today’s global markets, multinational corporations exploit the economic value of animals throughout the world on an unprecedented scale. The philosophical and legal notions that animals are mere unfeeling machines or pieces of property, although more or less taken for granted for centuries, has been challenged, if not burst asunder, in recent decades (in law, moral philosophy, and cognitive and other sciences), and regulation of the treatment of animals in agriculture, experimentation, entertainment and other areas has begun to make substantial inroads in national and international law. This book provides a detailed analysis of international and comparative animal law focusing on the impact of today’s globalized economy on animal law. Describing a wide range of domestic and international laws relating to the treatment of animals, the author explicates the sorts of legal rules which affect the global animal marketplace. Representative norms in existing animal protection laws are analyzed and critiqued, illustrating the diverse approaches taken by different countries and by the international community in regulating uses of animals. Among the issues covered are the following: - contemporary philosophical thought on the relationship between humans and animals; - recent scientific research relating to cognitive and other abilities of animals; - legal issues relating to factory farming and animal slaughter; - legal protection of animals during transport; - regulatory schemes on animal experimentation; - laws on the use of animals in entertainment; - laws on protection of companion animals; - regulation of trade in endangered species; - international trade issues relating to animals, including consideration of the provisions of GATT and the seminal WTO/GATT decisions in the Tuna/Dolphin, Shrimp/Turtle, Tuna Labeling and EU/Seal Products cases; - constitutional protection for the interests of animals; - intellectual property law issues relating to animals; - efforts to have the legal “personhood” of certain animals judicially recognized; and - what the future may hold for animal law in the global economy. To ensure the consideration of a full range of legal approaches, the laws analyzed come from a wide variety of countries and jurisdictions, including Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, the EU, Germany, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Switzerland, the UK, and state and federal laws of the US. Numerous international treaties and conventions relevant to animal treatment and animal law are also covered, including the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works, the CITES Convention, the European Convention for the Protection of Animals Kept for Farming Purposes, the European Patent Convention, the GATT Treaty, the TRIPS Agreement and the Universal Copyright Convention. It is not difficult to grasp, given the continuing increases in production, consumption and use of animals and animal products worldwide, that legal initiatives in this often emotional and acrimonious area of law are frequently contentious and hard fought. But this is really just the dawn of animal law, which has only recently become recognized as an important cutting-edge topic, and this area of the law promises to develop rapidly in the future. This book is enormously valuable in contributing to the continuing development and understanding of this law, clearly laying out the contours and boundaries of existing animal laws in our global economy, and allowing legal educators, concerned lawyers and policymakers to teach, formulate proposals, argue cases and defenses, and secure a firm purchase on future trends and developments in animal law.
