Book excerpt: This manual is a compilation of various laws, rules, regulations, guidelines, trivia, judgments passed for administering better treatment to animals and for their protection, welfare and safety. It gives an insight into the animal rights and laws that currently prevail in India. It is a compilation of animal laws in India, for ready reference I conceived of this book 'Animals and the Law, ' as there is a dearth of material on laws pertaining to animals. The endeavor was to make it non-technical and informative for the reader. The book of animal laws in India, compiles the law, cases decided by courts, and trivia which would interest everyone. It is also a peek into the complex world of animals and the tightrope that they walk in their co-existence with humans. I have received the able support of my colleague Ritikaa Modee, who invested her time in the endeavor.

Download or read book Animals as Legal Beings written by Maneesha Deckha and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2020-12-16 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Animals as Legal Beings, Maneesha Deckha critically examines how Canadian law and, by extension, other legal orders around the world, participate in the social construction of the human-animal divide and the abject rendering of animals as property. Through a rigorous but cogent analysis, Deckha calls for replacing the exploitative property classification for animals with a new transformative legal status or subjectivity called "beingness." In developing a new legal subjectivity for animals, one oriented toward respecting animals for who they are rather than their proximity to idealized versions of humanness, Animals as Legal Beings seeks to bring critical animal theorizations and animal law closer together. Throughout, Deckha draws upon the feminist animal care tradition, as well as feminist theories of embodiment and relationality, postcolonial theory, and critical animal studies. Her argument is critical of the liberal legal view of animals and directed at a legal subjectivity for animals attentive to their embodied vulnerability, and desirous of an animal-friendly cultural shift in the core foundations of anthropocentric legal systems. Theoretically informed yet accessibly presented, Animals as Legal Beings makes a significant contribution to an array of interdisciplinary debates and is an innovative and astute argument for a meaningful more-than-human turn in law and policy.

Book Cow Care in Hindu Animal Ethics

Download or read book Cow Care in Hindu Animal Ethics written by Kenneth R. Valpey and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-02 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides both a broad perspective and a focused examination of cow care as a subject of widespread ethical concern in India, and increasingly in other parts of the world. In the face of what has persisted as a highly charged political issue over cow protection in India, intellectual space must be made to bring the wealth of Indian traditional ethical discourse to bear on the realities of current human-animal relationships, particularly those of humans with cows. Dharma, yoga, and bhakti paradigms serve as starting points for bringing Hindu—particularly Vaishnava Hindu—animal ethics into conversation with contemporary Western animal ethics. The author argues that a culture of bhakti—the inclusive, empathetic practice of spirituality centered in Krishna as the beloved cowherd of Vraja—can complement recently developed ethics-of-care thinking to create a solid basis for sustaining all kinds of cow care communities.

Book The Welfare of Animals

  • Author : Clive Phillips
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2008-11-07
  • ISBN : 1402092199
  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book The Welfare of Animals written by Clive Phillips and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-07 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Welfare of Animals is an exciting book that will stimulate and provoke its readers. It describes many problems faced by animals – those we use for food, for pleasure or in research, and those simply but harshly affected by shrinking habitats in the face of the ever-growing human population. And yet it is not a depressing read. It focuses not only on the difficulties that animals face, but on their capacity for free-choice, for joy and excitement, and on the possible ways in which the planet can be shared between species if only we take the time and trouble to think more carefully about the impact of our actions. Clive Phillips moved from the United Kingdom to take up a Foundation Chair in Animal Welfare at the University of Queensland, becoming Australia’s first Professor of Animal Welfare in 2003. This cultural leap, combined with his travels in countries like Malaysia and Borneo, permits him the unique and broad perspective that forms the backbone of this book. Eschewing the normal territory patrolled by the animal scientist (explaining the physiological basis of the stress response or causation of abnormal behaviour), Clive ventures into jungles and deserts, city centres and tribal homelands, and presents a book that remarkably and successfully combines travel-diary, nature notes, social and cultural history.
