Book Report of the Follow up Collaborative Study

Download or read book Report of the Follow up Collaborative Study written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collaborative study to validate a method to determine the sum of Fumonisin B1 (FB1) and B2 (FB2) in compound animal feed and maize by immunoaffinity column clean-up and High Performance Liquid Chromatography with Fluorometric Detection (HPLC-FLD) was conducted by the Joint Research Centre - Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements with the participation of 16 laboratories of 12 Member States of the European Union. The method consisted of extraction of the Fumonisins from the sample with 50 % methanol in phosphatebuffered saline, clean-up with immunoaffinity columns, and detection of the o-phtaldialdehyde derivatives after either pre- or post-column derivatisation with HPLC-FLD. Five materials, consisting of compound animal feed and maize, were tested. Three of the materials were naturally contaminated, and two were naturally contaminated and additionally spiked. The contamination levels ranged from 3 to 16 mg/kg for the sum mass fraction of FB1 and FB2. Four laboratories had to be excluded from the evaluation because of non-compliance. For the remaining 12 laboratories repeatability and reproducibility were computed using robust statistical methods. Relative repeatability and reproducibility standard deviations of 2.0 to 5.3 %, and 15 to 20%, respectively, were found. Horwitz ratios ranged from 1.2 to 1.9 and were all acceptable. We deem the method as fit for the purpose of enforcing recommended maximum levels of the sum of Fumonisin B1 and B2 in animal compound feed, and maize intended for animal feed, and have submitted it to the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN)/ Technical Committee (TC) 327 Animal feeding stuffs.

Book Hazards associated with animal feed

Download or read book Hazards associated with animal feed written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-11-04 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for feed for terrestrial and aquatic animals continues to rise with the increasing demand for foods of animal origin; however, the challenge is not only to meet the growing need for feed but also to ensure its safety and thus contributing to the safety of the entire food chain. Feed safety incorporates the impact on human as well as animal health and welfare, which, in turn, can affect productivity. Hazards in feed may be inherent to feed ingredients as well as introduced during feed production, processing, handling, storage, transportation, and use. Hazards in feed may also result from accidental or deliberate human intervention. The expert meeting reviewed and discussed potential hazards in feed of chemical, biological and physical origin. It addressed hazards, as well as their occurrence in feed are described, and transfer from feed to food, relevance for food safety, impact on animal health, and emerging issues and trends. In addition, specific consideration was given to feed and products of feed production technologies of increasing relevance, for instance insects, former food and food processing by-products, biofuels (bioethanol and biodiesel) by-products, aquatic plants and marine resources.

Download or read book Phytochemical Methods written by Jeffrey B. Harborne and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there are many books available on methods of organic and biochemical analysis, the majority are either primarily concerned with the application of a particular technique (e.g. paper chromatography) or have been written for an audience of chemists or for biochemists work ing mainly with animaltissues. Thus, no simple guide to modern metho ds of plant analysis exists and the purpose of the present volume is to fill this gap. It is primarily intended for students in the plant sciences, who have a botanical or a general biological background. It should also be of value to students in biochemistry, pharmacognosy, food science and 'natural products' organic chemistry. Most books on chromatography, while admirably covering the needs of research workers, tend to overwhelm the student with long lists of solvent systems and spray reagents that can be applied to each class of organic constituent. The intention here is to simplify the situation by listing only a few specially recommended techniques that have wide currency in phytochemical laboratories. Sufficient details are provided to allow the student to use the techniques for themselves and most sections contain some introductory practical experiments which can be used in classwork.

Book Extraction of Organic Analytes from Foods

Download or read book Extraction of Organic Analytes from Foods written by Ron Self and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed as a laboratory manual of methods used for the preparation and extraction of organic chemical compounds from food sources. It offers ideas on how to facilitate progress towards the total automation of the assay, as well as proposing assays for unknowns by comparison with known methods. Beginning with an introduction to extraction methodology, Extraction of Organic Analytes from Foods then progresses through sample preparation, extraction techniques (partition, solvation, distillation, adsorption and diffusion) and applications. Subject indices for the applications are organised by commodity, method, chemical class and analyte, and provide useful examples of references from the literature to illustrate historical development of the techniques. Examples of methods that have been compared, combined or used in collaborative trials have been correlated and used to form the beginnings of a database that can be expanded and updated to provide a laboratory reference source. Logically structured and with numerous examples, Extraction of Organic Analytes from Foods will be invaluable to practising food analysts as both a reference and training guide. In addition, the introductory sections in each chapter have been written with food science and technology students in mind, making this an important title for academic libraries.
