Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anglo-Jewish Memories and Other Sermons During the present month I shall, by Divine mercy, complete the threescore years and ten ordinarily allotted to man. Half a century will also shortly have elapsed since I preached my first sermon at the Consecration of the Swansea Synagogue on behalf of my revered father vt, who was prevented by illness from undertaking this duty. These anniversaries have prompted me to publish a selection of Sermons preached during a ministry extending over forty-five years - a task which has been ofttimes urged upon me, but which the burden of official duties has prevented me from accomplishing. In selecting a few of these discourses I have deemed it right to give prominence to those delivered on occasions which moved our hearts both as Englishmen and as Jews. The subject which most deeply stirred the sympathies of the house of Israel during this period was the unhappy persecution of our Russian brethren, a sore recrudescence of which was witnessed only a few years ago. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anglo-Jewry and the Great War: A Sermon Preached on the First Day of the New Year, September 21st, 5675-1914 To-day, in the face of the peril that overshadows us, a wondrous passion has stirred the whole nation. It was an amazing sight that I beheld on Friday and Saturday last in the military centre of Aldershot, when tens of thousands of the finest flower of English man hood were being prepared to do their duty. Men of all conditions stood shoulder to shoulder, grim and earnest at their work and so likewise, from end to end of our far - flung Empire, the loyal children of the Colonies, the devoted princes and peoples of India, have given willingly of their best, ready to do battle for Justice and Right. This is a passion, not of revenge or hatred, not of a lust of conquest or land hunger, but a whole-hearted patriotism, a self-sacrificing loyalty, an absorbingly stern resolve to vindicate the honour of England and uphold the cause of Liberty and Progress against a mediaeval despotism that lives by the sword alone. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Truth in Religion and Other Sermons: Delivered at the Services of the Jewish Religious Union The twenty Sermons here collected were all delivered at the services of the Jewish Religious Union in London within the last two or three years. They are printed with out any changes except a few merely verbal corrections. If any friendly sympathiser or friendly opponent wants to know the sort or things I say, or the sort of Judaism I seek to teach, at the services of the Union, he can know it by glancing at, or better, by reading, this book. In a few cases I have ventured to print consecutively sermons which treat of the same subject from somewhat different points of View. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons and Addresses IT is more than ten years ago that several of the sermons included in this volume were type-written, with a view to their publication. I had repeatedly been asked to give forth, in a collected form, a number of the addresses which I had delivered. But the exigencies of professional life, and the heavy claims upon my time by the various duties of my position, did not permit me to fulfil that request. I con tented myself in the meantime with issuing special sermons in pamphlet form, or through the medium of the Jewish Press. An occasion, however, to which reference is made in the Dedication attached to the present volume, has impelled me, after many years of preaching, both to gratify the wishes of my friends and to afford myself the satisfaction of giving to the spoken word a more permanent form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Normal Jew: Sermon Preached at Kol Nidre Service Jewish history has been tragic because of this one fact. With the Romans pounding upon the walls of Jerusalem and threatening the integrity of the Jewish people, partisan belabored partisan within the walls, so that the last day dawned upon a handful, survivors of their own internecine struggle as well as the enemies' darts and spears. What a miserable picture is pre sented to us time and again throughout history of men within the camp itself reporting, informing a common enemy, whose constant presence did not seem to be a sufficient stimulus to bring the people to a reasonable realization of their own common danger, and so weld them into a solid unity! Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ideal Jewish Pastor: A Sermon, Preached at the Great Synagogue, on June 23rd, 5651-1891, on the Occasion of His Installation It is just forty-six years ago since I sat in yon der gallery, nestling close to my dear mother, gazing with childish wonderment on the strange ceremonial that was being enacted below - the installation of a new Chief Rabbi. I then comprehended but little of the discourse that was preached on that occasion; but since that time I have often read and re-read the words that were spoken by my beloved father and revered predecessor, He dilated on the feelings of diffidence and trepidation with which he entered upon his office, being a stranger in a foreign land, the language of which he, as yet, but imperfectly understood, and placed amid surroundings that were altogether novel to him. There are, I believe, several here to-day who can recall the fervour with which he implored Divine help and blessing - a help and a blessing which were indeed so signally manifested to him from the moment that he set foot, on these shores to the time when his soul returned to its heavenly home, mmom nwwpn, sacred and pure.
