Book The Global Anglican Communion

Download or read book The Global Anglican Communion written by Stephen Noll and published by . This book was released on 2018-06-04 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, endorsed by Anglican bishops and scholars around the world, is important reading for those preparing for the Global Anglican Future Conference in Jerusalem in June 2018 - and for those in other traditions too. Author Stephen Noll has been a watchman and participant in Anglican affairs over the past quarter century, as a priest and educator in the USA and Uganda. This highly readable anthology of his writings, often written in the heat of the battle, chronicles the departure of the Anglican establishment in North America and England from classic Christian teaching on Scripture, marriage, and church order. Professor Noll concludes: "I want to commend to readers the vision of a renewed and reformed Global Anglican Communion, a communion of churches that builds on the heritage of the Church of England and represents the emerging leadership of formerly colonial Anglican churches, whereby the oversight of doctrine and discipline has shifted from Canterbury to the Global South."

Book Why I am Still an Anglican

Download or read book Why I am Still an Anglican written by Caroline Chartres and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2007-03-10 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Anglican church has been no stranger to controversy during its history but the debates raging at the moment are among the hottest it has known. This book asks some prominent Anglicans why they are still in the church and what they love about it. Representing Anglicanism in all its range and diversity, the contributors are positive about the church and their place in it, and show appreciation, rather than resentment, of a Church that is broad enough to contain those of opposing views. This is a personal, partial and affectionate (though by no means uncritical) glimpse of the Anglican Church.

Book Christian Encounters with Chinese Culture

Download or read book Christian Encounters with Chinese Culture written by Philip L. Wickeri and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a team of internationally recognized scholars, Christian Encounters with Chinese Culturefocuses on a church tradition that has never been very large in China but that has had considerable social and religious influence. Themes of the book include questions of church, society and education, the Prayer Book in Chinese, parish histories, and theology. Taken together, the nine chapters and the introduction offer a comprehensive assessment of the Anglican experience in China and its missionary background. Historical topics range from macro to micro levels, beginning with an introductory overview of the Anglican and Episcopal tradition in China. Topics include how the church became embedded in Chinese social and cultural life, the many ways women's contributions to education built the foundations for strong parishes, and Bishop R. O. Hall's attentiveness to culture for the life of the church in Hong Kong. Two chapters explore how broader historical themes played out at the parish level—St. Peter's Church in Shanghai during the War against Japan and St. Mary's Church in Hong Kong during its first three decades. Chapters looking at the Chinese Prayer Book bring an innovative theological perspective to the discussion, especially how the inability to produce a single prayer book affected the development of the Chinese church. Finally, the tension between theological thought and Chinese culture in the work of Francis C. M. Wei and T. C. Chao is examined. "This is one of the finest books on Christianity and Chinese culture to have emerged in recent years. Philip Wickeri has done the almost-impossible, and assembled an outstanding, world-class team of scholars to write on Anglican and Episcopal history in China, with essays focusing on education, liturgy, ministry, ecclesiology and theology. This is a timely, important book—and one that will re-shape the way we understand the place of Anglican and Episcopal churches in the past, present and future."—Martyn Percy, dean of Christ Church, Oxford, UK "This pioneering study provides new knowledge of local parishes, translation of liturgy, as well as mission and theology of Chung Hua Sheng Kung Hui. Comprehensive in scope and original in using new resources, it will stimulate new scholarship in the study of Christianity in China."—Kwok Pui-lan, author of Chinese Women and Christianity, 1860–1927 "The essays included in this important volume offer a refreshingly realistic image of the Christian missionary enterprise and its interaction with Chinese culture and society. The contributors present new angles of interpretation, with more informed and nuanced accounts of the complexities and contradictions that shaped the encounter of one particular strand of Western Christianity and Chinese culture during a turbulent century of change."—R. G. Tiedemann, professor of Chinese history, Shandong University, China

Download or read book A New Conversation written by Robert Boak Slocum and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these twenty-nine essays, Episcopalians consider the tradition and the future of their church--its theology, its polity, its missiology. These "new conversations" come from ministers of every order (bishop, priest, deacon, laity) and from practiced hands at many ministries (education, theology, music, chaplaincy, and spiritual direction). Several essayists write urgently that the Episcopal Church must change if it is to survive. Others contend--with equal fervor--that American Anglicanism can work if Episcopalians will reclaim and reaffirm their liturgical, spiritual, and theological heritage. Between these views are other writers who suggest that points of supposed opposition might indeed coexist in the church of the future--taking vibrant, and perhaps paradoxical, new forms.

Download or read book Anglicanism written by Andrew Wingate and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 1998 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a new century approaches, the Anglican Communion continues to expand and mature. What began as a series of colonial chaplaincy outposts has become a worldwide family of autonomous churches with a common heritage amid remarkable diversity. Until now, most of the published material about Anglicanism has reflected the perspective of the United States and the United Kingdom. In response to this dearth of genuinely global resources, England's Center for Anglican Communion Studies initiated the process that has resulted in this remarkable volume. In Anglicanism:A Global Communion the editors have brought together men and women, lay and ordained, from all over the world, to demonstrate the breadth of experience, spirituality, and thinking that exists within the worldwide Anglican family. This is a collection of essays by 81 contributors from all parts of the Anglican Communion. Essays deal with issues of faith; worship, spirituality and theology; the Church and ministry; mission within a diversity of faiths and cultures; Church and society; and Anglican identity. This is a joint publication of Church Publishing and Cassell's, London. Above all, these accounts taken together say an emphatic No! to the myth of Anglicanism as a privileged club for white Anglo-Saxons who live in the northern hemisphere but presume to speak for their southern neighbors. Here at last is a book stating unequivocally that in the Anglican Communion there are many gifts, many voices. (384 pp)

Book Christian Life and Practice

Download or read book Christian Life and Practice written by Owen C. Thomas and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of the Christian life and the practice of Christians and the church from an Anglican perspective. It begins with an analysis and explication of the structure and process of the Christian life before God in the church and the world involving a five-fold rule of life and the relation of this to spiritual direction. This is followed by an analysis and critique of the current spirituality movement, which arose in the 1970s and which has come to dominate and mislead the churches. A sequel to the latter explains the origin of the spirituality movement in the current Romantic movement that arose in the 1960s and has influenced all aspects of our culture with ambiguous results. Next there is a critique of contemporary parish ministry as practiced in residential parishes that at best ministers only to the private lives of its members, followed by a fictional story of such a residential parish that suggests a new departure in parish ministry. Then there is a critique of preaching in the Episcopal Church that is generally considered to be poor, and a proposal of a way to overcome this. The concluding three chapters treat a fundamental problem in our approach to private prayer and a way to resolve this, a proposal for a way to overcome the current impasse in the Anglican Communion concerning homosexuality, and a meditation on the responsibility of Christians in public life.
