Book Angiospermae Ordnung Ranunculales

Download or read book Angiospermae Ordnung Ranunculales written by Paul Hiepko and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second volume of 'Die natürlichen Pflanzenfamilien' is presented now in the new format: the book contains an extensive General Part including contributions of different authors specializing in various fields of botany and it is written mainly in English. The first volume of this kind on the family Loganiaceae was published in 1980. The Ranunculaceae is a moderately large family with 59 genera and ca. 2500 species. Many of these have beautiful flowers or substances with strong physiological activity. They are used as ornamental or medicinal plants. This family shows great diversity in both vegetative and reproductive structures as well as in ecology. It retains many primitive characters and is regarded as one of the most primitive angiospermous families, but on the other hand it often presents quite specialized or advanced features. Therefore the family has attracted attention of many botanists from various points of view, and its members have been studied not only taxonomically, but also morphologically, anatomically, embryologically, palynologically, cytologically, phytochemically, serologically, and so on. Thus the Ranunculaceae are indeed an intensively studied family. The main author of this book, M. Tamura has been studying the family taxonomically for more than 40 years. In the history of the taxonomic studies of the Ranunculaceae, there were three monumental works. The first is that of A. P. De Candolle. In the first volume of his 'Systema Naturale' (1817) the family has been monographed at the species level for the first time. His work was excellent and gave a sound base to the taxonomy of the family and influenced the subsequent work for a long time. The second monograph at the generic level is that of K. Prantl (1888) which appeared in 'Die natürlichen Pflanzenfamilien'. This author used anatomical and embryological characters, in addition to traditional morphological ones for the classification of the family, and tried to make a phylogenetic sys

Book Flowering Plants Eudicots

Download or read book Flowering Plants Eudicots written by Job Kuijt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the present volume taxonomic treatments including descriptions of and keys to the families and genera for the orders Santalales and Balanophorales are offered, the former group here comprising 12 families with 162 genera and about 2100 species, and the latter with the single family Balanophoraceae composed of 16 genera and about 42 species. The contentious family classification of Santalales has been thoroughly revised against the background of previous classifications as well as available structural and molecular evidence, and also the classification of Balanophoraceae has been carefully updated. Santalales are predominantly hemiparasites connected with either the branches or the roots of other green land plants, whereas Balanophoraceae are holoparasites that form terrestrial tubers attached to the roots of woody hosts. In both orders, parasitism has led to considerable reductions of the vegetative and reproductive organs and detailed descriptions are given on the initiation of ramal and terrestrial parasitism in Santalales and the haustorial connection and tissue continuity between host and parasite in both groups. The dramatic reduction of the vegetative body in Balanophoraceae, which may lack all vegetative organs typically found in green land plants, has promoted studies in the field of developmental morphology. Thus, the volume not only provides an overview of the diversity of the plant groups treated therein, but also points to the interesting biological peculiarities that have evolved in connection with their singular lifestyle.

Download or read book Chemical Food Safety written by Leon Brimer and published by CABI. This book was released on 2011 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preventing contamination with problematic chemical compounds in food, from 'plant to plate and meat to meal', begins with an understanding of the food production and processing chain as well as relevant issues in toxicology and risk management. The diversity in origin and structure of unwanted chemical substances means that combating chemical contaminants in food needs a good understanding of science in a number of disciplines as well as the regulatory processes designed to minimise risks to a world population increasingly exposed through international trade. This book covers the basic and applied science needed to understand, analyse and take professional action on problems and questions concerning chemical food safety, from acute to long lasting problems that call for interventions on a local, regional, national or international level. Risk assessment is explained in the context of targeted future risk management and risk communication. The book follows problematic chemical compounds through production and processing of foods of plant, fungal, algal or animal origin, including oral exposure and intestinal absorption of such contaminants. The aim is to reach a harmonized level of understanding of all aspects of chemical food safety, so as to make the graduated student ready for work in all sectors related to food and its production.
