Book Anger Hostility and the Heart

Download or read book Anger Hostility and the Heart written by Aron Wolfe Siegman and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on the roles played by hostility and anger in the etiology and course of coronary heart disease (CHD) has mushroomed. Moreover, there has been considerable progress in the knowledge of neurohormonal correlates of anger and hostility that could conceivably play a role in the pathogenesis of CHD. The editors of this volume believe that this is the appropriate time in the history of coronary-prone behavior research to take stock -- to identify the basic questions that need further elucidation, and to provide future direction. Although there is a surprising consensus among the contributors about the nature of the critical issues, they each offer a somewhat different perspective. This book will provide a variety of perspectives on what is known and what still needs to be known -- a useful source for promising research hypotheses.

Book excerpt: Anger kills. We’re speaking here not about the anger that drives people to shoot, stab, or otherwise wreak havoc on their fellow humans. We mean instead the everyday sort of anger, annoyance, and irritation that courses through the minds and bodies of many perfectly normal people. • If your immediate impulse when faced with everyday delays or frustrations—elevators that don’t immediately arrive at your floor, slow-moving supermarket lines, dawdling drivers, rude teenagers, broken vending machines—is to blame somebody; • If this blaming quickly sparks your ire toward the offender; • If your ire often manifests itself in aggressive action; then, for you, getting angry is like taking a small dose of some slow-acting poison—arsenic, for example—every day of your life. And the result is often the same: Not tomorrow, perhaps, or even the day after, but sooner than most of us would wish, your hostility is more likely to harm your health than will be the case for your friend whose personality is not tinged by the tendencies to cynicism, anger, and aggression just described. In Anger Kills, learn how to recognize the symptoms of chronic anger in yourself, avoid feelings of hostility, and deal with hostility from others.

Book Coronary Prone Behavior

    Book Details:
  • Author : T. M. Dembroski
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-11-11
  • ISBN : 3642860079
  • Pages : 362 pages

Download or read book Coronary Prone Behavior written by T. M. Dembroski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost two decades ago, Drs. Meyer Friedman and Ray Rosenman de veloped the concept of the Type A coronary-prone behavior pattern and pioneered research in the area. Since then, much effort has been devoted to investigating both medical and psychosocial implications of this phenomenon by an impressive array of biomedical and behavioral scientists. On the basis of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's (NHLBI) recent Congressional mandate concerning disease prevention and control, the Division of Heart and Vascular Diseases undertook an intensive review of the existing literature in this area. The review underscored that the very nature of the concept of coronary-prone behavior requires examination by researchers from a variety of disciplines. Publication of findings in both the medical and behavioral literature, however, has created difficulties in gaining a truly com prehensive understanding of the total effort in this area. It became obvious that there was no coherent integration of information regarding the strength of the association between behaviors and disease processes (or outcomes), how be havioral factors associated with coronary heart disease were measured, the possible physiological mechanisms mediating the relationship between be havior and disease, whether intervention could be effective, and what forms of intervention appeared most promising. In short, a clear need existed to or ganize this information in a more coherent fashion so that it could be subjected to critical review by members of both the medical and behavioral scientific communities.

Book Managing Multiple Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Disease Through Anger Hostility Control and Medicine

Download or read book Managing Multiple Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Disease Through Anger Hostility Control and Medicine written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the decrease in coronary heart disease mortality over the past 30 years, coronary heart disease (CHD) continues to reign as the leading cause of death in men and women. Cardiovascular disease, including CHD, kills nearly 500,000 American women each year and black women generally have a higher prevalence of CHD risk factors and a higher death rate at a younger age than white women (Haan, 1996). Risk factors are highly prevalent in women aged 20-74 years. One third have hypertension, 14 have hypercholesterolemia, % are overweight, and % are sedentary. These factors are more prevalent in women of lower socioeconomic status and lower educational level (Wenger, 1995). In 1995, an estimated 34.3% of women reported having 1 risk factor and 30% of women reported having two or more of the following risk factors for cardiovascular disease: hypertension, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, overweight and smoking. The prevalence of two or more risk factors increased with age, decreased with educational level and was higher among black women. The percentage of women with two or more risk factors was significantly higher than estimates from 1992 (Greenlund, et al., 1998).

Book Handbook of Psychocardiology

Download or read book Handbook of Psychocardiology written by Marlies Alvarenga and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook brings together the full weight of contemporary evidence bearing on what is now commonly termed “psycho-cardiology”. It focuses on the role of psycho-social factors in the genesis and clinical management of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The book constitutes a critically reviewed compendium of current knowledge in the area, coupled with guides to evidence-based best practice in the field of psycho-cardiology. The following categories are covered: Social/demographic risk for CVD, Personality and CVD risk, Stress and CVD risk, Psychopathology (particularly affective disorders) and CVD risk, The psychological management of those with clinical CVD, Psychology in the prevention of CVD. The book integrates the evidence into a compelling argument that clinicians, researchers and those in public health will discount the role of psychological factors in regard to CVD at their own peril. And importantly for clinicians charged with the care of patients with CVD, the book poses the argument that failure to recognize the links between psychological factors and CVD may well be at the considerable peril of those patients under their care.

Book Thriving With Heart Disease

Download or read book Thriving With Heart Disease written by Wayne Sotile and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Not only can you survive with heart disease, you can actually thrive with it for many, many years. If you cope well and follow the advice I give you in this book, you can live as long as you would if you didn't have the illness." -- from Chapter One, "Begin the Journey" In this landmark volume, Wayne M. Sotile, Ph.D., breaks the story that every heart patient needs to know: In many cases, it's how you deal with the illness and not the condition of your heart that will determine how completely you recover, or if you recover at all. If you're one of the 61 million Americans diagnosed with heart illness -- whether you've had a heart attack, high blood pressure, angina, or surgery -- the program in this book can extend your life and might even save it. Many books have dealt with the physical aspects of cardiovascular illness, but Thriving with Heart Disease is the first to offer patients and their loved ones a program for coping with the emotional and psychological side effects that can ravage relationships and throw families into disarray. Dr. Sotile's extraordinary success with cardiac patients attests to his belief that living with heart disease is not a temporary adjustment but a journey you take one moment at a time toward the healthy life you were meant to live, surrounded by the people you love. Based on the experiences of thousands of patients at Wake Forest University's Cardiac Rehabilitation Program -- the nation's first mind-body center for living well with heart illness -- Dr. Sotile's program provides step-by-step instructions on how to establish a robust, new normal life for you and the people you care about, whether you're a parent with young children, a mature adult with grandchildren, or a single man or woman whose family is a devoted network of friends. Written with warmth and humor and filled with news of the latest research into the links between heart and brain, body and soul, Thriving with Heart Disease is the book that every heart patient needs to read. It's not a diet book, an exercise book, or a cookbook. It is the first self-help manual to guide heart patients and their loved ones through the psychological side effects they're likely to experience and onto the path to vibrant, new normal lives.

Book The Challenge of Enlightenment

Download or read book The Challenge of Enlightenment written by Ryuho Okawa and published by Little Brown Uk. This book was released on 2007-01-25 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ryuho Okawa is known for his wisdom, compassion and commitment to educating people to think and act in spiritual and religious ways. Through his Institute for Research in Human Happiness (IRH) he teaches and ministers to people who need help and they in turn spread his teachings to others. THE CHALLENGE OF ENLIGHTENMENT presents Okawa's thoughts on Enlightenment; what it is, what it is not, and the place of happiness and peace in the modern world. He also discusses how to gain enlightenment, and how this links in with other tenets of the Buddhist way of life. Presenting the nature of enlightenment and the challenge of attaining it in clear, simple but thought-provoking language, this is an excellent companion to THE ESSENCE OF BUDDHA and THE CHALLENGE OF THE MIND, and offers the general reader a complete demystification of an often over-complicated tradition.
