Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the beloved author of the #1 New York Times bestsellers Tuesdays with Morrie and The Five People You Meet in Heaven comes his most critically acclaimed novel yet—a stunningly original tale of love: love between a man and a woman, between an artist and his mentor, and between a musician and his God-given talent. Narrated by the voice of Music itself, the story follows Frankie Presto, a war orphan born in a burning church, through his extraordinary journey around the world. Raised by a blind guitar teacher in Spain and gifted with a talent to change people’s lives—using six mysterious blue strings—Frankie navigates the musical landscape of the twentieth century, from the 1950s jazz scene to the Grand Ole Opry to Elvis mania and Woodstock, all the while searching for his childhood love. As he becomes a famous star, he loses his way, until tragedy steals his ability to play the guitar that had so defined him. Overwhelmed by his loss, Frankie disappears for decades, reemerging late in life for one spectacular yet mystifying farewell. Part love story, part magical mystery, The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto is Mitch Albom at his finest, a Forrest Gump-like epic about one man’s journey to discover what truly matters and the power of talent to change our lives.

Download or read book Johann Sebastian Bach Christmas Oratorio BWV 248 written by Ignace Bossuyt and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to provide the inquisitive listener with a guide to exploring the many layers of meaning found in Bach's Christmas Oratorio. The first section offers a general sketch of the specific context in which this composition was created at the end of 1734, shedding light on the work's liturgical function and taking a closer look at the biblical and broader religious themes. This first section will also focus on the contemporary textual and musical components of the oratorio genre, of which Bach's composition is a prime example. The second section is a detailed discussion of the 64 movements making up the work, with a focus on three aspects: the text, the music and the relation between the two. The nature of the musical setting and its structure depends on the nature of the text, be it prose (the Bible story) or poetry (the chorales and the inserted commentary), narrative or dramatic (indirect or direct speech). Moreover, the music was governed by the particular musical canons of the day, which largely determined and regulated the structure of each section and the coherence between successive sections or those at a greater remove from one another. In order to get to the essence of Bach's oeuvre, the reader-listener must be prepared to become immersed in the literary and musical idiom, the specific terminology and "grammar" of the day.
Download or read book Cyberbrain Guardian Angel written by Benoit Blanchard and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2020-02-06 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-21st century, newborns in the United States are legally required to befitted with a “cyber,” an electronic device that has successfully slashed crime rates by changing the thought patterns of the people who have them. In Canada, however, cybers are still illegal. Max Wilson, the first man to successfully have his cyber surgically removed, has settled in Canada, seeking a new life and joining the fight to have the law changed in the United States. With Dr. Warren Alston, who removed his cyber and is now teaching other surgeons how to do so as well, he becomes part of an operation to smuggle devices into the US that disable cybers without surgery. Meanwhile, Patrick Kobayashi, the inventor of the cyber, is taking an active part in Canada’s election campaign in support of Richard Lane, a maverick politician intent on introducing the cyber into the Canadian landscape, against his own party’s wishes. When a mysterious man calling himself “Guardian Angel” begins threatening Dr. Alston and others trying to stop the spread of the cyber, things take an ominous turn. As efforts redouble in Canada and the United States to stop the insidious threat of the cyber, which the shocking case of one little girl shows may have horrible side effects, the mysterious Guardian Angel resorts to murder and attempted murder. The freedom of individuals to think their own thoughts hangs in the balance as events race to a frightening conclusion.
