Book excerpt: In his second book, following The Harry Chronicles, which won the 1995 PWA/St. Martin's First Private Eye Novel Contest, Allan Pedrazas brings back the wise-cracking Florida private eye Harry Rice in Angel's Cove. Harry is enjoying a state of semi-retirement and a moment of serenity as the owner of the tropical beachside pub the Sand Bar when a frantic phone call from his regular day bartender, Carla, interrupts his reverie. Carla's father's unexpected death has led her back to the small coastal town of Angel's Cove. There she discovers that the time of his death doesn't correspond with when she last spoke to him. Then a threat in the form of a dead kitten warns her to back off. Enlisting Harry's help, she sets out with him to learn what is behind her father's death, encountering much hostility from the locals, who make it clear that Carla's father was not welcome in Angel's Cove. Like the frosty tropical beverages Harry whips up for his customers, Pedrazas blends the perfect mix of humor and intrigue to take his readers on another memorable and suspenseful adventure.

Book The Corruption of Angels

  • Author : Mark Gregory Pegg
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On two hundred and one days between May 1, 1245, and August 1, 1246, more than five thousand people from the Lauragais were questioned in Toulouse about the heresy of the good men and the good women (more commonly known as Catharism). Nobles and diviners, butchers and monks, concubines and physicians, blacksmiths and pregnant girls--in short, all men over fourteen and women over twelve--were summoned by Dominican inquisitors Bernart de Caux and Jean de Saint-Pierre. In the cloister of the Saint-Sernin abbey, before scribes and witnesses, they confessed whether they, or anyone else, had ever seen, heard, helped, or sought salvation through the heretics. This inquisition into heretical depravity was the single largest investigation, in the shortest time, in the entire European Middle Ages. Mark Gregory Pegg examines the sole surviving manuscript of this great inquisition with unprecedented care--often in unexpected ways--to build a richly textured understanding of social life in southern France in the early thirteenth century. He explores what the interrogations reveal about the individual and communal lives of those interrogated and how the interrogations themselves shaped villagers' perceptions of those lives. The Corruption of Angels, similar in breadth and scope to Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie's Montaillou, is a major contribution to the field. It shows how heretical and orthodox beliefs flourished side by side and, more broadly, what life was like in one particular time and place. Pegg's passionate and beautifully written evocation of a medieval world will fascinate a diverse readership within and beyond the academy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lilly And The Angel 'Good Spirits and the Spirit Block' -Volume2- "Punishment has never been so WICKED!!" ANIMOSITY! DISSENSION! FRICTION! RIVALRY!--these are the kindest ways to describe the underlying connection between this sullen, substitute Angel and his atrocious and chilly child-assignment. The journey continues in this second installment of the epic three-part Novel, as Corinthian and Lilly fight for dominance in securing the upper hand between one another, all the while trying to fight through the barrage of enemies sent to attack them. It is now Wednesday, two full days since the appearance of Corinthian Angel Creation Of God on earth as Lilly's Aegis, and already he has found himself in deep trouble--with little to no progress of achieving his ultimate goal of becoming an official Guardian Angel. Corinthian now has to navigate through, and undo a major catastrophe (created by him) against Lilly, as both have raised the stakes within the physical and spiritual realm. Lilly has never been worse, and as the days go by, her emotions are hinting 'moral conflict' as the defensive walls she has built around her life are starting to weaken against the faint whisper of the possibility of a world 'without the need of them.' As stated before, "These two individuals are messed up, and in need of a serious intervention! Together, Lilly and Corinthian must let get go of their differences and trust in themselves, each other, and the \'Most High\' if they're ever to have a chance at the liberation, the validation and peace they both so desperately...yet so 'secretly' desire. A rude Angel with a serious distaste for humans, an unmannerly six-year-old girl with an attitude larger than the city in which she lives; this could either be a recipe for disaster...or the very ingredients for a miracle!"

Book excerpt: Colonel Mathew Stone and his seven man Special Forces team were the best in the world. But times had changed, and they were slated for early retirement by Uncle Sam. Matt figured they would collect their retirement checks and probably become high paid security guards. But in a bizarre twist, an angel from Heaven appears to Stone and his men, pleading for their help to save an alien planet from evil demons. It's part of a galaxy-wide struggle between good and evil for the souls of millions of humans. The angels are spread too thin and need assistance on the backwards planet of Rytan. Under Heaven's new plan, the coming war on Rytan would have to be contracted out. Wary about the whole situation but bored with their new lives, Stone and his men take the job. Unfortunately, the only allies they find are medieval pacifists trained to flee from the enemy, a fact the angel conveniently left out. Now, all the earthlings have to do is cross an unknown world, turn a continent full of medieval pacifists into an army, and learn the Ways of Power from a Wizard-Priest so they aren't incinerated by demons. Easy, right? Wrong...
