Book excerpt: From a groundbreaking Slovenian-Austrian poet comes an evocative, captivating collection on searching for home in a landscape burdened with violent history. At its core, Distant Transit is an ode to survival, building a monument to traditions and lives lost. Infused with movement, Maja Haderlap’s Distant Transit traverses Slovenia’s scenic landscape and violent history, searching for a sense of place within its ever-shifting boundaries. Avoiding traditional forms and pronounced rhythms, Haderlap unleashes a flow of evocative, captivating passages whose power lies in their associative richness and precision of expression, vividly conjuring Slovenia’s natural world––its rolling meadows, snow-capped alps, and sparkling Adriatic coast. Belonging to the Slovene ethnic minority and its inherited, transgenerational trauma, Haderlap explores the burden of history and the prolonged aftershock of conflict––warm, lavish pastoral passages conceal dark memories, and musings on the way language can create and dissolve borders reveal a deep longing for a sense of home.

Book excerpt: Haderlap is an accomplished poet, and that lyricism leaves clear traces on this ravishing debut, which won the prestigious Bachmann Prize in 2011. The descriptions are sensual, and the unusual similes and metaphors occasionally change perspective unexpectedly. Angel of Oblivion deals with harrowing subjects - murder, torture, persecution and discrimination of an ethnic minority - in intricate and lyrical prose. The novel tells the story of a family from the Slovenian minority in Austria. The first-person narrator starts off with her childhood memories of rural life, in a community anchored in the past. Yet behind this rural idyll, an unresolved conflict is smouldering. At first, the child wonders about the border to Yugoslavia, which runs not far away from her home. Then gradually the stories that the adults tell at every opportunity start to make sense. All the locals are scarred by the war. Her grandfather, we find out, was a partisan fighting the Nazis from forest hideouts. Her grandmother was arrested and survived Ravensbrück. As the narrator grows older, she finds out more. Through conversations at family gatherings and long nights talking to her grandmother, she learns that her father was arrested by the Austrian police and tortured - at the age of ten - to extract information on the whereabouts of his father. Her grandmother lost her foster-daughter and many friends and relatives in Ravensbrück and only escaped the gas chamber by hiding inside the camp itself. The narrator begins to notice the frequent suicides and violent deaths in her home region, and she develops an eye for how the Slovenians are treated by the majority of German-speaking Austrians. As an adult, the narrator becomes politicised and openly criticises the way in which Austria deals with the war and its own Nazi past. In the closing section, she visits Ravensbrück and finds it strangely lifeless - realising that her personal memories of her grandmother are stronger. Illuminating an almost forgotten chapter of European history and the European present, the book deals with family dynamics scarred by war and torture - a dominant grandmother, a long-suffering mother, a violent father who loves his children but is impossible to live with. And interwoven with this is compelling reflection on storytelling: the narrator hoping to rid herself of the emotional burden of her past and to tell stories on behalf of those who cannot.

But what throws Astrid the most is what she never expected to encounter in this race. A familiar face she can’t place. Secret powers she shouldn’t have. Book excerpt: Jones O'Brien, an Afghanistan war veteran, Special Forces operative, loses his wife Kaz to a horrible cancer. His faith in God is shaken. What kind of God would do such a thing he asks? Angels answer. In this action-filled novel about God's Angelic Warriors and Satan's Demonic Fallen Angels, the battle for Humankind is fierce and ongoing.Satan and his minions know full well that God has been very specific: there will be no going back. It is also clear that the Rapture, when it occurs, will result in the Fallen Angels being cast into the fiery pit for one thousand years. Hell will be their new home. The source of all evil on Earth, it becomes clear that for Koal, Sonta, and Zorah, the process of turning the faithful to the 'Darkness' must be accelerated if the Fallen are to survive. Their only recourse is to eliminate the believers.Countering this wave of darkness is the task of the Angelic Warriors, Ephram, Arrow, and, when needed, Michael, the most powerful of the angels. Prayer, being asked to help, is the trigger behind all angelic intervention. Unless asked, the angels cannot intervene.Set in the scenic wilderness of Southern Illinois' river country, the battles at the Little Grand Canyon, Bald Knob Cross, Shawnee National Forest, and The Garden of the Gods will fascinate readers of faith and those who have none. It is my hope that all who read Oblivion's Reach will feel the power of prayer that resonates through the outreach of the characters who are fighting an enemy of biblical proportion.

Book excerpt: They say that when you die, you either go to Heaven or Hell. But the harsh reality was there is only Hell. Before the fall of Heaven, if a demon had spent a hundred years in Hell, it could finally pass through to Eden, the paradise dimension. As time went on, the demons grew envious of the angels and attacked Heaven, imprisoning the Saints, the guardians of the gates, and overthrew their land, forcing Hell to become the destiny of everyone, regardless of how you behaved when you were alive. Before their defeat, the Queen of Heaven cast a curse upon the land, locking the gates of Eden forever and made it so that only the Fallen Angel could reopen them. Seraphina is nearing the end of her demon days. No one had passed into Eden since the Hadean War and it was becoming difficult to find enough souls to claim. If she did not move up the ranks soon, she would disappear into Oblivion, the dimension of the Forgotten. Those who reached Oblivion never came back, forced to watch as everyone they loved lost all memory of them. While delivering her first fresh soul in months to the Keepers of the Vault, Seraphina stumbles upon a Saint. Can an insignificant thief of the underworld unite with a handsome, divine guardian to find the Fallen Angel and restore the balance of the Afterlife? Or will Hell be the only option for the deceased?
