Download or read book Ancient Beliefs and Customs of the Tagalogs written by Jean-Paul G. POTET and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a provisional essay, followed by a vocabulary and an index, on the Tagalogs' world view in the Sixteenth Century. It is mainly based on the entries of the earliest dictionaries of the Tagalog language. These were written by Spanish lexicographers about half-a-century after the conquest of the Philippines (Cebu 1565, Manila 1571). Additional data are drawn from Spanish chronicles. Many of the recorded beliefs and customs were already obsolete at the turn of the Seventeenth Century. Some are extremely surprising, starting from the primeval myth according to which the world had no solid land at its beginning, but only two fluids, water and air.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Immanent Visitor written by Jaime Saenz and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2002-10-30 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Immanent Visitor is a triumphant procession of that hallucinated angel, Jaime Saenz, carried into English by Kent Johnson and Forrest Gander."—Eliot Weinberger "The appearance of Jaime Saenz in English is a major event for all of us who live and write within that language. In this authoritative selection and translation by Forrest Gander and Kent Johnson he enters the imagination of North America—a later but crucial member of the pantheon of west coast South American poets that includes Neruda, Vallejo, Huidobro, and Parra. The poetry is relentless and the genius of the man who made it inescapable. For a poetry of awakening and terror, this is the place to look."—Jerome Rothenberg "These poems in translation are a revelation, a masterful conceit. 'Reading Saenz we are struck awake into a surging, polyphonic language of unstable, rapid transitions,' the poet/translators say, and so it is: a plain of shifting verbal sands, Saenz unfolds in their hands. The poem and the reader are both kept off-balance until they levitate into a trance, el momento of fusion where poetry begins. It is a great thing to witness this translation as event, the coming of Saenz into a new 'us,' a moment when poetry can be read as 'ours,' meaning 'north and south connected.' This is nuestra poesía."—Cecilia Vicuña, author of The Precarious/Quipoem: The Art and Poetry of Cecilia Vicuña

Download or read book Exotic Territory a Bilingual Anthology of Contemporary Paraguayan Poetry written by Ronald Haladyna and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exotic Territory: A Bilingual Anthology of Contemporary Paraguayan Poetry seeks to address a dearth of information in the English-speaking world about Paraguayan poetry of the past forty years. The twelve outstanding poets included hereJos Luis Appleyard, Moncho Azuaga, Gladys Carmagnola, Susy Delgado, Oscar Ferreiro, Rene Ferrer, Joaqun Morales, Amanda Pedrozo, Jacobo Rauskin, Elvio Romero, Ricardo de La Vega, Carlos Villagra Marsalrepresent a wide diversity of themes, styles, and perspectives in this little-known nation. Most of them have published extensively, have been recognized through literary awards and inclusion in national and international anthologies, and continue writing today. To contextualize the poets and their poetry for readers unfamiliar with Paraguay, the Introduction provides a brief background of its geography, history, government, economy, society, and artistic milieu. Following that is a wide selection of representative poems published previously in Spanish, with translations in English on facing pages. The book concludes with a brief biographical sketch of each poet, followed by an unprecedented and extensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources intended to encourage those readers who might want to pursue further reading or research on any poet of interest.
Download or read book Histories of Perplexity written by A. Ricardo López-Pedreros and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-19 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By combining chronological coverage, analytical breadth, and interdisciplinary approaches, these two volumes—Histories of Solitude and Histories of Perplexity—study the histories of Colombia over the past two centuries as illustrations of the histories of democracy across the Americas. The volumes bring together over 40 scholars based in Colombia, the United States, England, and Canada working in various disciplines to discuss how a country that has been consistently presented as a rarity in Latin America provides critical examples to re-examine major historical problems: republicanism and liberalism; export economies and agrarian modernization; populism and cultural politics of state formation; revolutionary and counterinsurgent Cold War violence; neoliberal reforms and urban development; popular mobilization and counterhegemonic public spheres; political ecologies and environmental struggles; and labors of memory and the challenge of reconciliation. Contributors are sensitive to questions of subjectivity and discourse, observant of ethnographic details and micro-politics, and attuned to macro-perspectives such as transnational and global histories. These volumes offer fresh perspectives on Colombia and will be of great value to those interested in Latin American and Caribbean history.
Download or read book Tracing the Borders of Spanish Horror Cinema and Television written by Jorge Marí and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-04-07 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This critical anthology sets out to explore the boom that horror cinema and TV productions have experienced in Spain in the past two decades. It uses a range of critical and theoretical perspectives to examine a broad variety of films and filmmakers, such as works by Alejandro Amenábar, Álex de la Iglesia, Pedro Almodóvar, Guillermo del Toro, Juan Antonio Bayona, and Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza. The volume revolves around a set of fundamental questions: What are the causes for this new Spanish horror-mania? What cultural anxieties and desires, ideological motives and practical interests may be behind such boom? Is there anything specifically "Spanish" about the Spanish horror film and TV productions, any distinctive traits different from Hollywood and other European models that may be associated to the particular political, social, economic or cultural circumstances of contemporary Spain?
