Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The saints were the original social justice advocates. This stunning collection of contemporary portraits celebrates their diversity and spiritual depth as never before, accompanied by thoughtful reflections from bestselling and influential writers. “This book is profound, insightful, and beautifully disruptive.”—Sarah Bessey, author of the New York Times bestsellers A Rhythm of Prayer and Jesus Feminist Over the centuries, the rich diversity and relevance of the saints has been whitewashed, their images portrayed as expressionless, and the lessons of their lives watered down. But artist, writer, and modern iconographer Gracie Morbitzer is painting the truth. The Modern Saints is a celebration of the divergence of ethnicities, ages, abilities, and practices of spiritual pilgrims who transformed the world, and an invitation to connect with historical icons whose lives have astonishing and inspiring relevance for our present-day. Each entry of this striking collection features a contemporary image of the saint, a re-imagining of the space they might hold in society today, and an inspiring prayer to honor each figure. Readers will appreciate each contribution from our current generation's spiritual thought leaders that illuminate the impact and wisdom each historical saint offers us today. Among forty-eight additional spiritual reflections and original paintings, The Modern Saints presents: • Fr. James Martin’s reflections on the flexibility of St. Ignatius of Loyola to encounter God in everyday life • Tsh Oxenreider's unique appreciation for the endurance of St. Monica with her strong-willed children • Dr. Christena Cleveland's praise for St. Catherine of Alexandria’s fight for intersectional justice • Kirby Hoberg’s inspiration from the resilience of St. Kateri—the first indigenous American to be canonized—who overcame personal humiliation to cultivate love in her community With its unique portraits and compelling narrative, this 52-week collection is perfect for devotional reading, as it will move, encourage, and strengthen each reader as they find solidarity and profound belonging within the host of saints.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What exactly did Jesus Christ save us from other than hell fire? That was the question a somewhat frustrated friend asked while going through a difficult period in his life. Many Christians have asked similar questions or wondered why the Christian life in reality is so different from what is usually professed. This book is a true seeker's manual on the Gift of Salvation. It is for those who are not satisfied with only doctrines and creeds handed down by parents or pastors. It is for those willing to build on what they've learnt, dig deeper and find out the fullness of what God in His mercy gave to mankind in Jesus Christ. It not a book to rush or breeze through, like the Berean Christians, readers are encouraged to carefully study the Scripture references and dig out the truth for themselves. The promise of God is: "You will seek Me and find Me, when you seek Me with all your heart.

Book excerpt: To mention the words Christian and Naturist in the same sentence or even to believe that the two can co-exist within an individual may seem anathema to some. This book is the result of a journey one evangelical Christian minister has undertaken in which he discovered the image of God in our bodies and the challenge of reading the bible without our present cultural blinkers. Do the biblical texts condone or condemn the naked body? How does this fit into the modern context? Is Naturism a prophetic voice which calls into question many of the values which shape Western Society?

Book excerpt: Daniel Revisited makes the case that the ancient book of Daniel reveals four specific events to occur in the Middle East in the end times prior to the Tribulation. This new look at old assumptions about prophecy and plain reading of Scripture combines a comprehensive study of relevant history with the fresh perspective of today’s current events. Not only does it show that the Antichrist will be Muslim, it also identifies four events the author calls Signposts which will occur in a series leading right up to the Tribulation. The first event involving Iraq has already occurred. The second of the four events will be the invasion of the whole Middle East by Iran. The fourth event will witness the Antichrist's emergence.

Book Toward an Anthropology of Screens

Download or read book Toward an Anthropology of Screens written by Mauro Carbone and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-05 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows that screens don’t just distribute the visible and the invisible, but have always mediated our body's relationships with the physical and anthropological-cultural environment. By combining a series of historical-genealogical reconstructions going back to prehistoric times with the analysis of present and near-future technologies, the authors show that screens have always incorporated not only the hiding/showing functions but also the protecting/exposing ones, as the Covid-19 pandemic retaught us. The intertwining of these functions allows the authors to criticize the mainstream ideas of images as inseparable from screens, of words as opposed to images, and of what they call “Transparency 2.0” ideology, which currently dominates our socio-political life. Moreover, they show how wearable technologies don’t approximate us to a presumed disappearance of screens but seem to draw a circular pathway back to using our bodies as screens. This raises new relational, ethical, and political questions, which this book helps to illuminate.

In this groundbreaking study, Joe M. Easterling explores Christianity’s four most significant awakenings and how small groups have influenced the rise and sustainability of each. As readers encounter the incredible accounts of how God transformed individuals, communities, and even nations through the movement of his Spirit, they will discover that small groups have been there all along as one of revival’s most indispensable contributors. More importantly, readers will learn some common characteristics of the small groups during these awakenings and how they may be used in small groups of churches today in hopes that a spiritual awakening may ignite once again.

Book The Origins of Neoliberalism

Download or read book The Origins of Neoliberalism written by Dotan Leshem and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-04 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dotan Leshem recasts the history of the West from an economic perspective, bringing politics, philosophy, and the economy closer together and revealing the significant role of Christian theology in shaping economic and political thought. He begins with early Christian treatment of economic knowledge and the effect of this interaction on ancient politics and philosophy. He then follows the secularization of the economy in liberal and neoliberal theory. Leshem draws on Hannah Arendt's history of politics and Michel Foucault's genealogy of economy and philosophy. He consults exegetical and apologetic tracts, homilies and eulogies, manuals and correspondence, and Church canons and creeds to trace the influence of the economy on Christian orthodoxy. Only by relocating the origins of modernity in Late Antiquity, Leshem argues, can we confront the full effect of the neoliberal marketized economy on contemporary societies. Then, he proposes, a new political philosophy that re-secularizes the economy will take shape and transform the human condition.

Book Christianity Empire and the Spirit

Download or read book Christianity Empire and the Spirit written by Néstor Medina and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-05-29 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Christianity, Empire and The Spirit, Néstor Medina uncovers the cultural processes that play a crucial role in influencing how people understand reality, express the Christian faith, and think about God. He uses decolonial thinking, Latina/o theology, and Pentecostal theology to show how the cultural dimension is a central feature in the biblical text; was the force that coopted Christianity from the imperial era of Constantine onwards; and undergirded Western European colonialism and the missionary project. He engages with Protestant and Catholic articulations on “culture” and demonstrates how most theologians perpetuate Eurocentric frames for considering the relation between Christianity and the cultural dimension. Alternatively, he offers a theological proposal that recognizes the Spirit at work in the phenomena of cultures.
