Book Ocean Bottom Reconnaissance Off the East Coast of Andros Island Bahamas

Download or read book Ocean Bottom Reconnaissance Off the East Coast of Andros Island Bahamas written by Roswell Frank Busby and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A visual and photographic survey of the shore and ocean bottom to 600 feet (100 fathoms) depth was performed off selected sites on the east coast of Andros Island, Bahamas. Climatology and oceanographic conditions are also presented. Survey methods employed both SCUBA divers and a manned submersible (Perry Cubmarine PC3-B) to provide direct visual observation and measurement of bottom features. The Andros shoreline was observed to vary considerably in morphology and composition: barrier reef development ranges from well-developed to virtually non-existent from north to south along Andros Island. A marginal escarpment commencing offshore between 14 and 16 fathoms was observed to descent almost vertically to 100 fathoms. Various morphologic features of the escarpment suggest a lowering of sea level and subsequent subaerial and intertidal erosive processes which have been active in the recent geologic past.

Informed by twenty years of experience on the flats, Rod Hamilton and Kirk Deeter describe the allure of matching wits with one of fly fishing’s most elusive targets and discuss the reasons why more and more fly fishermen are seeking the challenge of catching bonefish without the aid of a guide. Do It Yourself Bonefishing is packed with useful tips to help all levels of fly fishermen locate and catch more of one of the world’s premier gamefish. Learn stalking strategies, how to spot bonefish, appropriate fly selection, and where to find the fish. As you plan your bonefishing trip, the authors’ destination chapters and “Seven-Day Sample Trip” itineraries suggest where to fish, how to get there, and places to stay. Included is a list of more than 300 individual bonefish hotspots located throughout the tropics, complete with maps and tips specific to the flat or creek system. Within the “Spousal Rating” section are Hamilton’s opinions on how suitable the destination is for nonfishers; the “Nonfishing Activities” section highlights things to do when not fishing. Book The Great Bahamas Hurricane of 1929

Download or read book The Great Bahamas Hurricane of 1929 written by Wayne Neely and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Bahamas Hurricane of 1929, also known as the Great Andros Island Hurricane of 1929, was the only major hurricane during the very inactive 1929 North Atlantic hurricane season. The Great Bahamas Hurricane of 1929 was perhaps one of the greatest and deadliest hurricanes to impact the Bahamas and is often regarded as the greatest Bahamian hurricane of the twentieth century. It was the only storm on record to last for three consecutive days over the Bahamas, with pounding torrential rainfall and strong, gusty winds. The storm killed 134 persons in the Bahamas, mostly mariners and sponge fishermen, as it directly hit the islands of Nassau and Andros. This thoroughly researched history considers this intense storm and its aftermath, offering an exploration of an important historical weather event that has been neglected in previous study. Also included is a harrowing account of a dog called Speak Your Mind who rescued a sponge fisherman at sea. Through unique historical photographs of actual damage, author and veteran meteorologist Wayne Neely shows the widespread devastation left in the wake of this tremendous storm. Drawing upon many newspaper accounts, ship reports, and Family Island Commissioners reports from throughout the Bahamas, the author provides a fascinating glimpse of this hurricane and the devastation it caused the Bahamas.
