Download or read book The Moral Uncanny in Black Mirror written by Margaret Gibson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-05 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This erudite volume examines the moral universe of the hit Netflix show Black Mirror. It brings together scholars in media studies, cultural studies, anthropology, literature, philosophy, psychology, theatre and game studies to analyse the significance and reverberations of Charlie Brooker’s dystopian universe with our present-day technologically mediated life world. Brooker’s ground-breaking Black Mirror anthology generates often disturbing and sometimes amusing future imaginaries of the dark side of ubiquitous screen life, as it unleashes the power of the uncanny. This book takes the psychoanalytic idea of the uncanny into a moral framework befitting Black Mirror’s dystopian visions. The volume suggests that the Black Mirror anthology doesn’t just make the viewer feel, on the surface, a strange recognition of closeness to some of its dystopian scenarios, but also makes us realise how very fragile, wavering, fractured, and uncertain is the human moral compass.
Download or read book Philosophical Reflections on Black Mirror written by Dan Shaw and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-12-16 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Mirror is a cultural phenomenon. It is a creative and sometimes shocking examination of modern society and the improbable consequences of technological progress. The episodes - typically set in an alternative present, or the near future - usually have a dark and satirical twist that provokes intense question both of the self and society at large. These kind of philosophical provocations are at the very heart of the show. Philosophical reflections on Black Mirror draws upon thinkers such as Friedrich Nietzsche, Pierre Hadot and Michel Foucault to uncover how Black Mirror acts as 'philosophical television' questioning human morality and humanity's vulnerability when faced with the inexorable advance of technology.

Download or read book The Digital Future of Hospitality written by Lindsay Anne Balfour and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book asks how an unconditional welcome to strangers is both challenged and made possible by new digital technologies, machine learning, and human-computer interaction (HCI). It argues that the digital – the advancement of data, the proliferation of machines (embodied or not) in our homes and on our screens, and the millions of lines of code that organize and predict our lives – is not the absence of hospitality but rather the beginning, though not without its challenges. While such an ethic remains more important than ever, The Digital Future of Hospitality updates this enduring philosophical imperative for digital times. Through the lens of cultural studies, intersectional feminism, and posthumanism, this book reanimates hospitality in relation to a series of digital texts that are relevant to the twenty-first century and beyond – android figures on television, virtual domestic assistants, home- and ride-sharing apps, wearable devices, and a renewed cultural obsession with viruses and immunity.
Download or read book The Age of Perversion written by Danielle Knafo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Board and Academy of Psychoanalysis Book Prize Winner for 2018 (Theoretical Category) We have entered the age of perversion, an era in which we are becoming more like machines and they more like us.The Age of Perversion explores the sea changes occurring in sexual and social life, made possible by the ongoing technological revolution, and demonstrates how psychoanalysts can understand and work with manifestations of perversion in clinical settings. Until now theories of perversion have limited their scope of inquiry to sexual behavior and personal trauma. The authors of this book widen that inquiry to include the social and political sphere, tracing perversion’s existential roots to the human experience of being a conscious animal troubled by the knowledge of death. Offering both creative and destructive possibilities, perversion challenges boundaries and norms in every area of life and involves transgression, illusion casting, objectification, dehumanization, and the radical quest for transcendence. This volume presents several clinical cases, including a man who lived with and loved a sex doll, a woman who wanted to be a Barbie doll, and an Internet sex addict. Also examined are cases of widespread social perversion in corporations, the mental health care industry, and even the government. In considering the continued impact of technology, the authors discuss how it is changing the practice of psychotherapy. They speculate about what the future may hold for a species who will redefine what it means to be human more in the next few decades than during any other time in human history. The Age of Perversion provides a novel examination of the convergence of perversion and technology that will appeal to psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists, social workers, mental health counselors, sex therapists, sexologists, roboticists, and futurists, as well as social theorists and students and scholars of cultural studies.

The collection reflects Black Mirror’s anthology structure by pairing a chapter with every episode in the show’s five seasons—including an interactive, choose-your-own-adventure analysis of Bandersnatch—and concludes with general essays that explore the series’ broader themes. Could heaven really, one day, be a place on Earth? Should criminal justice and punishment be crowdsourced? What rights should a “cookie” have? Download or read book We the Dead written by Brian Michael Murphy and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2022-05-16 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Locked away in refrigerated vaults, sanitized by gas chambers, and secured within bombproof caverns deep under mountains are America's most prized materials: the ever-expanding collection of records that now accompany each of us from birth to death. This data complex backs up and protects our most vital information against decay and destruction, and yet it binds us to corporate and government institutions whose power is also preserved in its bunkers, infrastructures, and sterilized spaces. We the Dead traces the emergence of the data complex in the early twentieth century and guides readers through its expansion in a series of moments when Americans thought they were living just before the end of the world. Depression-era eugenicists feared racial contamination and the downfall of the white American family, while contemporary technologists seek ever denser and more durable materials for storing data, from microetched metal discs to cryptocurrency keys encoded in synthetic DNA. Artfully written and packed with provocative ideas, this haunting book illuminates the dark places of the data complex and the ways it increasingly blurs the lines between human and machine, biological body and data body, life and digital afterlife.
Download or read book Attic Polters written by William X. Adams and published by Psifibooks.com. This book was released on 2024-10-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nikki Powers, a researcher in Oregon, is interested in people’s beliefs about ghosts. When actual ghosts, or “Polters,” appear in the attics of Portland houses, she must decide what she believes. Her boyfriend, Wald, a music-store technician, develops an app that translates the Polters’ terrifying wailing. Nikki and Wald learn that in the Land of the Dead, the Polters were promised they could join the living, but the bodies did not come across properly, leaving them trapped as helpless, wavering wraiths. They beg their hosts for help. Using a trance-inducing virtual-reality system, Nikki and Wald go to Bardonia, home of the Polters. They encounter Salem, director of the institute that sends Polters over to the living. They advise her that the process is not working and ask her to stop. But Salem enjoys being Queen of Bardonia. She has throngs of Polters clamoring for the transfer. What does she care if they’re not happy on the other side? Under pressure, Salem revises her method so Polters are transferred directly into the skulls of living people. The Polters thus have fully functioning bodies, but people in Portland become possessed. Most people are terrified, but some enjoy having a Polter voice in their head. They never feel lonesome and are full of new ideas. Salem missed something, though. Living people get old and die, leaving the Polters facing oblivion. Everyone panics. The word gets back to Bardonia where the resident Polters turn on Salem. In the chaos that ensues, Nikki and Wald become separated. Alone and grieving in a city gone hysterical, Nikki teams up with the Polters in her attic to save Wald and find a solution for both worlds. Both sides finally accept the truth that the living haunt the dead just as death haunts life. Attic Polters is a spirited adventure that unearths serious ideas about death and what comes after.

Download or read book Take Control of Your Productivity written by Jeff Porten and published by alt concepts. This book was released on 2020-03-25 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increase Productivity and Reduce Stress! Version 1.1, updated 03/25/2020 Being productive is never as simple as putting items on a calendar or to do list and checking them off. Most of us struggle with too much to do, too little time, and only a vague idea of how to plan each day so we can achieve the best results with the least stress. If that sounds like you (and especially if you’ve tried a bunch of productivity systems and found them lacking), Jeff Porten’s expert guidance may be just what you need. As a professional technology consultant and an early adopter of both hardware and software, Jeff has tried nearly every productivity management system out there, and experimented with dozens of implementation styles. He brings his decades of experience to this book, helping you create a customized strategy that’s ideal for your needs, and—crucially—avoid common mistakes. Whether you’re a productivity junkie or someone who has struggled for years with a cobbled-together, informal task-management system, this book will help you get a much better grip on your personal and business time. In this book, you’ll: • Review the principles of successful planning—whether for immediate projects or for long-term and someday goals. • Understand your natural working style and preferences, including comfortable habits that may not be productive but that you don’t want to change, and create a more effective workflow that fits you. • Discover the best ways to think about projects, tasks, events, due dates, flags, contexts, and more. • Choose a task-management app that’s appropriate for your needs, no matter what devices and operating systems you use, and that integrates with your calendar, reminders, notes, and the apps you use to actually do things. • Develop a step-by-step process for tracking all your events and tasks and ensuring that everything happens in the right order. • Transition from an old system to your new system without worrying that anything will fall through the cracks. • Learn exactly how to keep track of all the things you need to remember throughout the day. • Improve your time-estimation skills when planning how long future tasks and projects will take. • Solve the problem of “10-minute tasks” that become all-day projects because they have a dozen things you discover you need to do first. • Get better at managing other people (and their expectations of you). • Review how well your productivity system has worked over time, using feedback loops and suggested best practices to continually improve your workflow. • Fail successfully! If something goes wrong—from a derailing large project to a life-changing crisis—learn how to recover gracefully and improve your system the next time around. • Know when and how to make changes to meet any new needs you have, and to ensure that what you do every Tuesday at 2 PM contributes to your overarching goals and most important roles in life. Although many of the examples in the book refer to Mac productivity tools, the advice is platform-neutral. The book contains tips applicable to any combination of operating systems, and a companion webpage provides additional details on apps running on Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, and the web.
