Book and the Echo Follows

Download or read book and the Echo Follows written by Nicholas Paget-Clarke and published by Author House. This book was released on 2010-11-04 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asking the question, What is the connection between food and democracy? raises a lot of other questions. Some of the answers invalidate many of the myths of our assumed knowledge. Other answers describe the history and experience of a different understanding. What is the Green Revolution? What is food sovereignty? What is the verticalization of agriculture? What is agroecology? Who were Adam Smith and Karl Marx? Is free trade free? How much does a military cost? Where did this economic mess come from? Is a democracy a vote for who? Is land identity? What has art got to do with it? Do I care? Surprising to some, well-understood by others, many of the answers are available for both discussion and practice. Millions of women and men, farmers, indigenous people, and peasants are creating autonomous movements, social and economic relations, and processes of decision, which make power unnecessary and undermine alienation. They are movements, people of dignity. This is an investigation to learn. 204 pages. Approx. 60% text / 40% photographs. 203 original photographs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How a generation of women artists is transforming photography with analogue techniques. Beginning in the 1990s, a series of major artists imagined the expansion of photography, intensifying its ideas and effects while abandoning many of its former medium constraints. Simultaneous with this development in contemporary art, however, photography was moving toward total digitalization. Lateness and Longing presents the first account of a generation of artists—focused on the work of Zoe Leonard, Tacita Dean, Sharon Lockhart, and Moyra Davey—who have collectively transformed the practice of photography, using analogue technologies in a dissident way and radicalizing signifiers of older models of feminist art. All these artists have resisted the transition to the digital in their work. Instead—in what amounts to a series of feminist polemics—they return to earlier, incomplete, or unrealized moments in photography’s history, gravitating toward the analogue basis of photographic mediums. Their work announces that photography has become—not obsolete—but “late,” opened up by the potentially critical forces of anachronism. Through a strategy of return—of refusing to let go—the work of these artists proposes an afterlife and survival of the photographic in contemporary art, a formal lateness wherein photography finds its way forward through resistance to the contemporary itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventh Outlander novel from #1 National Bestselling author Diana Gabaldon. Jamie Fraser, erstwhile Jacobite and reluctant rebel, knows three things about the American rebellion: the Americans will win, unlikely as that seems in 1778; being on the winning side is no guarantee of survival; and he’d rather die than face his illegitimate son—a young lieutenant in the British Army—across the barrel of a gun. Fraser’s time-travelling wife, Claire, also knows a couple of things: that the Americans will win, but that the ultimate price of victory is a mystery. What she does believe is that the price won’t include Jamie’s life or happiness—not if she has anything to say. Claire’s grown daughter Brianna, and her husband, Roger, watch the unfolding of Brianna’s parents’ history—a past that may be sneaking up behind their own family.

Book Proceedings in Echo Encephalography

Download or read book Proceedings in Echo Encephalography written by E. Kazner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation of the brain by means of ultrasound has acquired increasing importance in the last years because it permits insight into the spatial relationships within the intact human skull in a short time without endangering the patient. The road from the first ultra sonic investigations on the exposed brain to the detection of intracranial midline shifts on the intact skull, the registration of echo pulsations and recently, to ultrasonotomography has been a long one already. However, this development is by no means at an end. Following the suggestion of numerous colleagues concerned with echo-encephalography in this country and abroad, the Neurosurgical Clinic of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg organized an "International Symposium on Echo-Encephalography" on April 14th and 15th, 1967. Here there was an open exchange of experience on the results obtained up to the present. The limitations of the method and sources of error as well as the directions of future development of the ultrasonic echo procedure were discussed.

Download or read book ECHOViruses Reoviruses written by Herbert A. Wenner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reoviruses are ether-resistant icosahedral viruses 60 to 75 mp in diameter which contain ribonucleic acid. They have been recovered from man and lower animals and are ubiquitous in their geographic distribution. At present, the importance of these viruses as a cause of human or animal disease is still largely unknown. As a result of having a number of unusual characteristics, reoviruses have attracted the attention of many workers in the relatively short time since they were first recognized. For example, investigators interested in the molecular aspects of virology have been attracted by the unusual double-helical ribonucleic acid of high molecular weight which reoviruses possess, while those interested in epidemiology have been attracted by the occurrence of apparently identical viruses in both man and an unusually wide variety of lower animals. This com pilation is based on information available to the author as of October 31, 1966. II. History The term "reqvirus" was proposed in 1959 (SABIN, 1959) as a group name for a number of viruses then classified (SABIN, 1956; RAMOS-ALvAREz and SABIN, 1958) as being identical with, or related to, ECHO type lO virus.

Book And the Icicles Froze the Roses In Her Hair

Download or read book And the Icicles Froze the Roses In Her Hair written by Miles Walters and published by Miles Walters. This book was released on 2024-02-18 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in a semi-modern London, And the Icicles Froze the Roses in Her Hair follows Asher Michaels, a recently graduated theatre student and amateur actor who, after having no roles fall his way, suddenly gets invited to work on a new experimental theatre piece that fuses mythology and avant-garde storytelling, overseen by a renowned director who is on the verge of making a comeback. Giving the actors total freedom and converting an old building to solely house the piece, it begins to become a living and breathing creation. And although Asher has surprisingly been cast as the leading man, it appears that the leading lady still remains unknown – a blank space after the character’s name on the cast list. Behind the scenes, Asher begins a relationship with co-star Sally Kale, who rehearse the script together every day. Sally also secretly rehearses the leading lady’s role in case a recast could be made possible. Then, out of the blue comes the actress Ginevra Bianchi, an Italian performer known for her work with a travelling act of artists, painters, musicians and dancers. With the freedom presented within the script, she begins to modify her character, slowly becoming enveloped by her, gradually removing elements of her own identity and submerging herself into the role. Asher begins to express concern for her as she now wears her makeup even when she isn’t acting, shuts herself away from her co-stars and even adorns her body with real roses that cut at her skin. And with a seemingly never-ending fog and rainy season that has surrounded London, Asher begins to wonder if the show can possibly go on as reality seems to become stranger than the play itself.
