Book And Still the Flowers Grow

Download or read book And Still the Flowers Grow written by Joan McNamee and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a sunny August afternoon in 1852, on the northern coast of Lake Erie, two dozen bodies from the ill-fated Atlantic Paddle Steamer shipwreck washed ashore and were rapidly retrieved from their watery graves by pioneer farmers homesteading on the Long Point peninsula. Some passenger did survive to tell their stories. While the Long Point families were most receptive to guiding and supporting some of these survivors with what was left of their tattered lives, they never could have imagined how their own lives would be so intimately affected by these destitute survivors. For Mary O'Malley and her three small children, her quest to discover the fate of her missing husband would take a devastating and surprising turn. Fellow passengers, Toby Ryan, a restless 19 year old Irish immigrant had stored up enough hate, revenge and anger to keep him afloat for as long as it took, the deadly consequences of his own unfinished business hanging precariously in the balance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic book that exposed the scandal of the dispossession of native land by American settlers And Still the Waters Run tells the tragic story of the liquidation of the independent Indian republics of the Choctaws, Chickasaws, Cherokees, Creeks, and Seminoles, known as the Five Civilized Tribes. At the beginning of the twentieth century, about seventy thousand of these Indians owned the eastern half of the area that is now the state of Oklahoma, a territory immensely wealthy in farmland, forest, coal mines, and untapped oil pools. Farmers, cattlemen, and coal diggers held their land in common and maintained their own legislative bodies and educational and judicial systems. Their political and economic status in the area was guaranteed by treaties and patents from the federal government. But white people began to settle among them, and by 1890 these immigrants were overwhelmingly in the majority. Congress therefore abrogated treaties that it had promised would last “as long as the waters run,” and when Oklahoma was admitted to the Union in 1907, the Indians received what Angie Debo calls the “perilous gift of American citizenship.” This book—which Oliver La Farge labeled a “work of art”—documents the orgy of exploitation that followed. Within a generation, the Indians were virtually stripped of their holdings, and were rescued from starvation only through public charity. Discovery of oil only intensified the struggle, and “grafting off the Indians” attained the status of a major industry.

Book Over 65 and Still in Demand

Download or read book Over 65 and Still in Demand written by Kris Moller and published by Partridge Publishing Singapore. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From early in life many of us begin to dream about how we will spend our retirement years. Travelling, turning an avocation into a vocation, and spending more time with the family whilst remaining healthy and purposefully engaged are among popular retirement goals. for many, however, they remain dreams, since as many as 70 percent of baby boomers may not retire on time. In Over 65 and Still in Demand, author Kris Moller looks at the various facets of retirement. Moller's work is guided by the broader concepts of retirement: why one retires; why one would want to retire; what one does in retirement; and why some people find an easy rhythm into retirement, while for others it is an ongoing nightmare. He also reflects on what worries someone nearing retirement age and how the economy, inflation and health matters will erode your nest egg. for those who are able to retire, Moller provides a roadmap of the eight areas to address for a purposeful retirement and six steps to follow to arrive at what to do with your day. and for those who do not--or cannot--retire "on time," he explores ways to remain relevant in the job market. This guide combines the hindsight of experience and age with knowledge and research to help you prepare for the retirement you deserve.

Book Green Pastures and Still Waters for the Flock of God

Download or read book Green Pastures and Still Waters for the Flock of God written by Julius A. Von Poseck and published by Irving Risch. This book was released on 2015-04-10 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Publisher's note: This written statement was penned over a 100 years ago.] The following was written nearly six years ago It was only after much hesitation and prayer, that, at the repeated requests of some esteemed Christians, and after a careful revision, I have resolved to commit these notes to print. I confide in the well-known forbearance of my dear fellow Christians in this country, as to the imperfections of expression. The twenty-third Psalm has been so interwoven with the whole of my Christian course (of more than 26 years), and our gracious Shepherd has, from this precious portion of His Pasture, whenever I turned to it, so often blessed my soul, that I could resist no longer the desire to communicate to others what He has been pleased to give to me. The dispensational side of our Psalm I have only occasionally touched upon, as the chief object of it is the feeding of the soul on Christ. Consequently even the great Christian principles of truth, foreshadowed and embedded in this Psalm, are considered, only as far as they concern the flock of God; for instance, the question of worship at the Lord's Table, where we feed upon His death, when "We sing of the Shepherd that died, That died for the sake of the flock." For, however important a place the Church, as such, may occupy at that blessed Table of our Lord, and in His counsels, yet this portion of divine truth would be out of place in our Psalm. May God keep us from growing into cool and enlightened churchmen, to the neglect of the pastoring of the flock, for whom the Good Shepherd died.

Book Can We Wear Our Pearls and Still be Feminists

Download or read book Can We Wear Our Pearls and Still be Feminists written by Joan D. Mandle and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation When Joan Mandle accepted the position of Director of Women's Studies at Colgate University, she had specific goals in mind - to make the program stronger, more academically rigorous, and publicly open. The program would resist becoming the captive of identity politics and would refuse to allow itself to become marginalized on the campus. It would reach beyond the negative stereotypes of feminism on campus by appealing to and challenging all students and faculty interested in gender issues and social change. Just as Mandle anticipated, she faced obstacles during the transformation. Among her critics were feminist students and faculty whose views of a successful program directly contradicted Mandle's. While the new director called for outreach, they insisted on isolation. While she set forth a policy of inclusiveness, they sought to maintain an exclusive community. These individuals preferred the former model of the women's studies program, despite its tendency toward separatism. Can We Wear Our Pearls and Still Be Feminists?explores women's studies from Mandle's perspective as a program director, feminist activist, and scholar. She offers a vivid account of being forced to grapple with fundamental issues of what women's studies is and should be. Her strong commitment to feminism and women's studies does not prevent her from voicing her concerns; instead, it compells her to share the story of her directorship in hopes of shedding light on the strengths and weaknesses, pitfalls and triumphs of women's studies as an academic discipline. Through her examination of the battles involved in creating an academically significant and ideologically open program, Mandle provides insight into a possible avenue of change for feminism. By showing how the program at Colgate University was able to encourage campuswide discussions on feminism, Mandle demonstrates that women's studies can succeed as an inclusive and rigorous field. This enlightening memoir provides readers with a window on important debates concerning feminism and women in academia.

Book What s the Least I Can Believe and Still be a Christian

Download or read book What s the Least I Can Believe and Still be a Christian written by Martin Thielen and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastor and author Martin Thielen has compiled a list of ten things people need to believe, and ten things they don't, in order to be a Christian. This lively and engaging book will be a help to seekers as well as a comfort to believers who may find themselves questioning some of the assumptions they grew up with. With an accessible, storytelling style that's grounded in solid biblical scholarship, Thielen shows how Christians don't need to believe that sinners will be "left behind" to burn in hell or that it's heresy to believe in evolution. And while we must always take the Bible seriously, we don't always have to take it literally. At the same time, Christians do need to believe in Jesus--his life, his teachings, his death and resurrection, and his vision for the world. A great benefit of those beliefs is that they provide promising answers to life's most profound questions, including: Where is God? What matters most? What brings fulfillment? What about suffering? Is there hope? Thielen articulates centrist, mainline Christianity in a way that's fresh and easy to understand, and offers authentic Christian insights that speak to our deepest needs. This new edition includes a leader's guide, previously only available online, and a new introduction from the author that reflects on the book's reception. The leader's guide features unique and easily implemented aids for carrying out a seven-week, congregation-wide initiative that will help local churches reach out to their communities. Download or read book Modernism and Still Life written by Tobin Claudia Tobin and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-02 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the 'still life spirit' in modern painting, prose, dance, sculpture and poetryChallenges the conventional positioning of still life a 'minor' genre in art historyProposes a radical alternative to narratives of modernism that privilege speed and motion by revealing forms of stillness and still life at the heart of modern literature and visual cultureProvides the first study of still life to consider the genre across modern literature, visual cultures and danceUncovers connections and cultural exchange between networks of European and American artists including the Bloomsbury Group and Wallace StevensThe late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries have been characterised as the 'age of speed' but they also witnessed a reanimation of still life across different art forms. This book takes an original approach to still life in modern literature and the visual arts by examining the potential for movement and transformation in the idea of stillness and the ordinary. It ranges widely in its material, taking Czanne and literary responses to his still life painting as its point of departure. It investigates constellations of writers, visual artists and dancers including D. H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, David Jones, Winifred Nicholson, Wallace Stevens, and lesser-known figures including Charles Mauron and Margaret Morris. Claudia Tobin reveals that at the heart of modern art were forms of stillness that were intimately bound up with movement: the still life emerges charged with animation, vibration and rhythm; an unstable medium, unexpectedly vital and well suited to the expression of modern concerns.

Book And Still Peace Did Not Come

Download or read book And Still Peace Did Not Come written by Agnes Kamara-Umunna and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2011-03-22 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When bullets hit Agnes Kamara-Umunna's home in Monrovia, Liberia, she and her father hastily piled whatever they could carry into their car and drove toward the border, along with thousands of others. An army of children was approaching, under the leadership of Charles Taylor. It seemed like the end of the world. Slowly, they made their way to the safety of Sierra Leone. They were the lucky ones. After years of exile, with the fighting seemingly over, Agnes returned to Liberia--a country now devastated by years of civil war. Families have been torn apart, villages destroyed, and it seems as though no one has been spared. Reeling, and unsure of what to do in this place so different from the home of her memories, Agnes accepted a job at the local UN-run radio station. Their mission is peace and their method is reconciliation through understanding and communication. Soon, she came up with a daring plan: Find the former child soldiers, and record their stories. And so Agnes, then a 43-year-old single mother of four, headed out to the ghettos of Monrovia and befriended them, drinking Club Beer and smoking Dunhill cigarettes with them, earning their trust. One by one, they spoke on her program, Straight from the Heart, and slowly, it seemed like reconciliation and forgiveness might be possible. From Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, Africa's first female president, to Butt Naked, a warlord whose horrific story is as unforgettable as his nickname--everyone has a story to tell. Victims and perpetrators. Boys and girls, mothers and fathers. Agnes comforts rape survivors, elicits testimonials from warlords, and is targeted with death threats--all live on the air. Set in a place where monkeys, not raccoons, are the scourge of homeowners; the trees have roots like elephant legs; and peacebuilding is happening from the ground-up. Harrowing, bleak, hopeful, humorous, and deeply moving--And Still Peace Did Not Come is not only Agnes's memoir: It is also her testimony to a nation's descent into the horrors of civil war, and its subsequent rise out of the ashes.
